Video Show: Stuff You Like

VIDEO: Harry Potter and the philosopher's themes

Did you know the Harry Potter series is now sixteen years old? No? Feel old yet? Never mind, because Harry and friends were Ursa’s Very First Fandom, and she’d like to take you on a trip down memory lane. Movies, books, and fandom ahoy: it’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Themes!

VIDEO: Wimbledon (2004)

No, not the tournament, it’s Wimbledon, the tennis-based romantic comedy! You know, the one where a last-hope English dude (hooray, Paul Bettany!) wins Wimbledon and has sex with a hot American player? That one. And… hold on just a second. Does that random extra playing a ball boy look a bit… familiar to anyone else?

VIDEO: Zombie Strippers! (2008)

It had to happen eventually, right? Ursa and the Porn Critic team up (in person!!) to review Zombie Strippers!, starring Jenna Jameson and Robert Englund, where undead boobs meet existentialism, George W. Bush jokes, and contempt for the audience! Wait, what?

VIDEO: The Honor Harrington Series

It’s Ursa’s birthday, so she’s celebrating with a woman who kicks butt and takes names… in spaaaaaaace! It’s the Honorverse series of books that transplants the adventures of Horatio Hornblower into the 41st century (and into a female protagonist). Also featuring Prince Zuko, the suspiciously familiar Ode to Exposition, and a special appearance by our own Porn Critic!

VIDEO: Star Trek (2009)

Ursa takes a newbie’s-eye view of the 2009 Star Trek movie, and talks lens flares, Chris Pine, and how this movie relates to Jeremy Brett. No, really. This episode also includes a completely spoiler-free “review” (read: extended impressions session) of Star Trek Into Darkness. Caution: May contain Benedict Cumberbatch.

VIDEO: The October Daye Series

For Ursa’s second anniversary, she does a spoiler-free review of Seanan McGuire’s October Daye fantasy novel series, about a private investigator named October “Toby” Daye who happens to be a changeling, i.e., half human and half faerie.

VIDEO: Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

Ursa dips her toe into the weird and wonderful world of women’s soccer (or as Ursa calls it for some reason, “football”) and Sikh culture. With Spice Girls references, Keira Knightley, football montages, and a lead character who’s secretly a Disney princess, this is Bend It Like Beckham!

VIDEO: A Knight's Tale (2001)

Take one sports movie, add Chaucer, comedy, the hits of Queen, and anachronistic metalworking, and serve with a side of naked Paul Bettany. Also on today’s episode: Palamon, Arcite, Emily, and the Bessemer process. Not necessarily in that order.

VIDEO: Antitrust (2001)

A geeky Ryan Phillippe (see his glasses?) goes to work for an evil software company that is totally not Microsoft, run by a murderous CEO played by Tim Robbins who is totally not channeling Bill Gates. Sexy nerd boys, product placement, scenery chewing, and Linux: what more could you want in a film?

VIDEO: Analyzing the Avengers: Here Come the Girls

For the final installment of Analyzing the Avengers, Ursa takes a look at all the secondary and tertiary female characters that populate the Marvel Movie-verse. Why does Pepper wear those shoes? Who is Darcy written for? How does the narrative reward Dr. Foster for her career? And is Thor’s wardrobe department awesome, or what?

VIDEO: Analyzing the Avengers: Hawkeye

Oh, Clint, you so sassy. In this episode, Ursa chats about some aspects of Hawkeye’s character in The Avengers, and then gets overexcited by the Hawkeye Initiative, and its sterling efforts in highlighting the ridiculousness of female poses in comics. Good job there, Agent Barton!

VIDEO: Les Misérables: A Musical Review

It’s a special all-singing, all-dancing (except for the dancing) episode of Stuff You Like! In honor of the Les Misérables movie adaptation coming out today, Ursa musically summarizes the entire three-hour stage musical in four minutes. You’re welcome.
