VIDEO: Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997)

From out of Mendo’s misspent youth comes this review of the second (more fanservice-y) Power Rangers film, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie! And Mendo hopes you bloody well appreciate it, because just thinking about Power Rangers Turbo gives him hives! I mean, seriously, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie was bad enough, but now the Power Rangers are fighting evil with cars? It just doesn’t add up, man! Featuring cameos from the Cinema Slob, the Film Renegado, Sofie Liv, Full of Questions, Irreverent Edutainment’s Demoversi, and the HENSHINCast’s Danny Boy!

      Hurray!

  • MichaelANovelli

A good episode, in my opinion, but this took FOREVER to edit!

    • Thomas Stockel

Well worth the effort, I say.  Fun stuff, dude!

      People still say “dude”, right?

      • MichaelANovelli

        I do, if that counts…

  • so tattooed teenage alien fighters from beverly hills really DID exist, and it wasn’t just a weird fever dream I had as a kid, lol:)

    • MichaelANovelli

Stay tuned!  Slob and I are gonna do a crossover on that at some point!

  • Jay_Bay

No lie, out of all the old school Power Rangers, I like Turbo the best even with that….even with the fault of having -sigh- Justin.  Maybe cuz I like cars, maybe because Saban got the pattern down for what we see constantly for Power Rangers, maybe because being a black kid I liked the fact that the leader was a black teen (one that I admit did not like originally).  Whatever the reason or reasons, I rather Turbo over Mighty Morphin and Zeo.  You may now send me to roast on your hatred everybody.

    • MichaelANovelli

My personal favorites were the original Ninja Rangers.  Yes, they were technically still part of the Mighty Morphin era, but killing giant monsters with a frog is still bad-ass!

      • Jay_Bay

I do have to agree.  If anyone can make a frog badass, it’s Vash the Stampede.

  • Jay_Bay

    This movie, however……fuck that shit

    And Fan Service HURRAY!

    • MichaelANovelli

      SO MUCH FANSERVICE!

      • Jay_Bay

Also, no Big Sean’s song “Ass” for those nice ass shots?

        • MichaelANovelli

I like to subvert people’s expectations every now and then.  😉

  • Ciyfox

    Funnily enough, Mighty Morphin Power
Rangers started my love for Martial arts.

Nice episode, the editing was great and the cameos where funny. However I’m
kind of sad that the interesting info about the shows Japanese heritage was
treated like some boring info dump, when stuff like that is good for
people who might not know the shows origins.

Also giving your opinion on what’s good or
bad about the antagonist would of been nice to know, rather than a sound
    bite.

Sorry if I’m critiquing too much, but I hope
    it’s helpful.

    Good review other wise.

    • MichaelANovelli

There wasn’t much to say.  Divatox was basically just eye-candy, near as I can tell.

Yes, it was a shame, but a two and half minute unbroken shot of Danny would have gotten a little dry…

      • Ciy

I guess, but you could of mixed in shots of the shows he mentioned and had quiet music in the back ground whilst his voice carried on. But… that’s just me.

As for Divatox, you could of explained what made her a bad character? Why didn’t you like her? Who should they of had instead?

I’m just trying to help. Ignore me other wise, as I’m not really any one who should be telling you this, since you’ve been doing this a lot longer than me. Lol.

        • MichaelANovelli

Not at all, I welcome criticism.  🙂

I just felt my lack of opinion was in and of itself an opinion, is all.

        • Jay_Bay

-mytwocents- If my memory serves me correctly, she was just a stock villain as compared to the rest of the lead baddies.  She barely have a story to her, so she was just…there.  Then they switch to space as she was just a lackey of the Machine Empire.

Also, I think she was there to keep the parents (read-dads) content -ifyouknowwhatImean-

(I did had something good to say, initially)

        • I think the biggest problem is that Divatox was just boring Rita, she was mad and exotic sure, but she didn’t do anything interesting other than “hey I’m evil” stuff.
Well there was that fiancé monster thing but that also went nowhere.

          • MichaelANovelli

A lot of things in this movie went nowhere.  Hell, if you hadn’t brought them up, I wouldn’t have bothered mentioning Bulk and Skull in this review.

          • The_Stig

You should ALWAYS mention Bulk and Skull. Even when what you’re reviewing has nothing whatsoever to do with them. They’re just boss. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb0rw5xIyGc

          • MichaelANovelli

I don’t deny their boss-ness, but really, they did nothing in this.  At all…

          • The_Stig

And THAT….was why this movie was terrible. (also the gorram kid). I was just thinking, it’s just like Rocky, who on multiple occasions has taken laser blasts to the face to cripple himself by awkwardly falling out of a boxing ring. That was seriously the best they could do to write him out? They couldn’t, say….open with an action scene where the Rangers are fighting Rita’s latest monster and while the Rangers once again win the day, Rocky gets seriously injured in the line of duty?

          • MichaelANovelli

No, because that would cost money.  Money they didn’t feel like spending!

          • The_Stig

That and the fact that Haim Saban has his cast taken out and shot whenever they’re no longer of any use to him (I’m assuming)

          • MichaelANovelli

I refuse to believe the man who wrote the theme to Diplodo would do that!  Or would he?

          • The_Stig

So in other words, Divatox was EXACTLY like Rita. The difference is, Divatox had a submarine, and as we all know, submarines are always cool.

        •  I’ll be releasing a full, uncut version to YouTube soon. Surprisingly, there was actually stuff I LEFT OUT of what I sent to Mendo.

          • MichaelANovelli

            I know *I* don’t believe it!

      • Wizkamridr

Divatox is actually more interesting when dubbed in Japanese. I’ve seen clips on youtube. Also watched the 1st movie in japanese w/ english subtitles. Tommy doesn’t sound like a stoner/ surfer dude. He actually sounds like a bada@@.

        • MichaelANovelli

Hey, it was the 90’s!  Having a stoner/surfer dude as our fearless leader was just the way we liked it!

          • Wizkamridr

JDF(Tommy) seems like a jacka@@ in real life. I’d still like to meet him though.

    • Wizkamridr

I love the original(japanese), and power rangers. You’d think Saban would stop being a cheap a@@ and stop using japanese stock footage. He plans on bringing one of the super sentai movies to the U.S. and mixing it with his own footage.

      • MichaelANovelli

I just don’t think us Americans could ever come up with anything as insane as having the Rangers get baked into a giant pizza…

  • The_Stig

Friggin’ Danny. The Jar Jar Binks of Power Rangers. The spawn of Hell that killed Power Rangers for me FOREVER.

I will say that Bulk and Skull are ALWAYS awesome. And Sofie………………… *one VERY long pause* Wow.

    • MichaelANovelli

I think you mean Justin.  Danny was the delightful lad from The HENSHINCast…

      • The_Stig

        Right, Justin.

But if Danny was Mr. Junior Infodump, he sucked too. I’m sorry but if the intention was to bore the hell out of me, mission accomplished.

    • Sofie Liv

       😀

      I needed that! thanks.

      • MichaelANovelli

You’re just going to have to face it, Sofie, you are quite lovely!

      • Shark Wayne

I was thinking the same thing Stig was except it was… Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn! XD

        • Jay_Bay

          My version was “Oh my…..”

          • MichaelANovelli

Is it any wonder why she’s the site’s most popular reviewer in Denmark?

          • The_Stig

I don’t care. She’ll always be the site’s most popular viewer…in my heart.

          • MichaelANovelli

            That’s just silly.  😛

          • Sofie Liv

            XD

          • MichaelANovelli

So, yes, I think what we’re all thinking is, “More reviews in that dress, please!”

          • Sofie Liv

Nice to know the dress finally came in handy after-all, I had that thing ever since I moved back from London and have never actually used it… was a bit to embarrising I suppose. I mean except when it’s an enternet video which any-one can see, millions of people in fact, THEN I’TS OKAY! duh.

          • MichaelANovelli

Well, keep it handy in case the Booth ever does a calender…  😉

          • The_Stig

I’m not even trying to creep, you were just drop dead gorgeous.

          • Jay_Bay

What, no….there’s that one reviewer that tries different kinds of buds and stems

            (that joke was weak sauce)

  • Chris Jericho stole all the lite brites!

And yeah Mendo, I’m probably more the star of your show than mine XD

    • MichaelANovelli

And to think, I thought you doing half the review would *spare* me some work.  Well, you live and learn…

  • Ah, Turbo.  Boring Ranger is replaced by Child Ranger.  Can these two fight to the death already?
Enjoyed the cameos in here, but it seemed a bit abrupt when it was as though you stopped doing the review just to put the cameos in.
Am I the only one who never found Divatox annoying?  Not attractive, just… annoying.

    • MichaelANovelli

I couldn’t get over how blah the whole show was.  Never gave her much thought, really…

      • What’s funny is that at the time, I felt going into Space was jumping the shark.  Years later, I wonder how I couldn’t have loved in Space and how I could have watched Turbo.  Maybe the show had just gotten so boring by that point I felt going into space was the last trump card they had left, and one I wasn’t going to dignify.

        • MichaelANovelli

Well, once you go into space, there’s really nowhere else to go, is there?

          • Jay_Bay

Yes there is….alternate universes and dimensions.  A Power Rangers/Sliders mix.

          •  Already done. RPM (technically the RPM/Samurai crossover movie, but still).

          • Jay_Bay

….touche DannyBoy.  Now I thinking on it, how the hell is Saban gonna do the American version of Gokaiger (aka Pirate Rangers)?

          •  Well, the season premiering this February Power Rangers Megaforce is going to cover ALL of Goseiger, and Super Megaforce will feature Gokaiger footage.

          • MichaelANovelli

            I do believe I’ve gone cross-eyed…

          •  You just don’t know all I do about sandwiches.

          • MichaelANovelli

            It would seem not…

          • Wizkamridr

            Liked the japanese crossover better.

          •  It was a much better movie.

          •  Well, they did go on to better writing once they got to space.  That’s something.

  • MichaelANovelli

And yes, that is the ONE magic trick I know.  Shark Wayne would be so disappointed.  Still, I did use that deck he gave me.  ^_^

    • I was figuring it out just as you revealed what the card looked like without your hands.

      • MichaelANovelli

I am Mendo!  Spoiler of Your Fun!

    • Shark Wayne

I was disappointed… until you used that deck I gave you… 😀 Very awesome man 🙂

      • MichaelANovelli

Well, I was using all the other stuff I got at MAGFest in the video, so I thought, why not?

  • MephLord

I only liked the original series.  I thought the “Plague of the Mantis” episode where Trini was training in Preying Mantis style Kung Fu was one of the coolest ever, as I hadn’t really heard of Kung Fu much growing up, or how many different styles of Kung Fu there are.  Also “Green With Evil” is probably my favorite stretch of the show, as it had a genuinely really good plot and pacing, and showed just how good the series can be when handled in a plausible and dramatic way.

    • MichaelANovelli

I liked Green Ranger Tommy a little better than White Ranger Tommy.  He had a cooler Zord!

  • John Wilson

    Soundtrack was awesome.

Ah. Cash money the Shakespeare of our time.
And print screen for Sophie of couse:).

    • MichaelANovelli

I’m not sure what you mean, but I like the cut of your jib, sir!

      • John Wilson

Sorry,I meant young money. Nicki label. Behind such classic lines as”And I got her nigga, grocery bag”, and”rack city bitch”.
And print screen how you take a picture on a windows computer:).

        • MichaelANovelli

OK, ’cause I was like, “Cash Money”?  They weren’t big in ’97…

          That’s funny.  ^_^

          •  Young Money is just Lil Wayne’s section of Cash Money, isn’t it?

          • MichaelANovelli

It’s a little more complex than that, but yes.

  • Tim Terrell

Once Mr. Mendo left to watch FWB and I saw Renegado’s face, I was out.

    • Thomas Stockel

A pity, because overall it was a pretty funny review.

    • MichaelANovelli

      Bummer.

    • I know right? He’s a jerk :3

      • MichaelANovelli

And his pro-taco/anti-burrito stance has been well-known for some time!

  • Chris Jericho stole all the Lite Brites!

  • MephLord

Was Power Rangers big in the UK and Europe (I say that because a lot of people in the UK don’t believe they are part of Europe, that they exist outside of Europe)?  If it is well known, is there a chance for a Legacy Hunting video about it?  Powers Rangers RPM was the latest thing I saw, and wow it was pretty damn well done.

    • MichaelANovelli

Well, the first time I ever saw Power Rangers (the very first episode, I might add!) was in London, so it might have been…

    • RPM was fucking awesome indeed.

      • Jay_Bay

I prefer SPD from the Disney set, but in my erratic memory they might have been the end of the first Saban era.

    • Deepthroat Ghoul

Yes, Power Rangers was HUGE in Great Britain!

  • Oh, yo, Michael and anybody else- have you guys heard about the plans for this movie they couldn’t afford to do?  Well, cuz of that and union reasons.  God, as a fan I think unions are the most annoying thing about TV shows.

    • One of them was having Billy in the movie I think, but since he left the show they had to scrap that too.

      • MichaelANovelli

I think expecting Billy to EVER come back is a bit unrealistic at this point.  Shame, he was my favorite of the original five…

      • Not sure about Billy, but they were definitely planning to have Zach and Trini appear, so probably.

  • TheScottCSmith

What an epic video! Even though I had to wait for Yulia until the very end.  Remind me to move to Denmark.

  • MichaelANovelli

Wow, it’s only been up a day and it’s already gotten almost 80 comments.  Haven’t lit a fire like this in a while!  🙂

    • Power Rangers man, power rangers!

      • Jay_Bay

        MORPHINOMINAL!

        • MichaelANovelli

          Reaganomics!  (I love Robot Chicken!)

  • maarvarq

“Chris Jericho stole all the Lite-Brites!” Yes, I read all that stuff if I notice it going past. The guest spots on this site’s videos have been getting a bit much lately, but Sofie’s was pretty much the funniest part of this one – a bit of ironic self-reference that was almost Pythonesque.

    • MichaelANovelli

One might almost be forgiven for thinking that was the whole goal of the video.  😉

      • maarvarq

In which case, sir, I complement you on your cunning plan 🙂

  • Okay, I’ve never, ever even been remotely into Power Rangers, but this was hilarious. Especially with the running fanservice joke. If I hadn’t been stifling my laughter to not wake my roommate up, I would probably be laughing my ass off still. :p

Also, the cameo from Sophie was fantastic. Great dress. ^_^ Holy hell, that sounded creepy. <–complement meant in a non-creepy way.

    • MichaelANovelli

I don’t recall having ever attempted a running joke before.  I’m so thrilled that everyone’s enjoyed it!

      Whoo-hoo!  I have a signature joke, now!

Also, so psyched that you liked the review!  You have no idea!

      • danbreunig

She already danced the Tarantella with Renegado as the Scarlet Defender.  And again as a vampire woman.  And as more proof that I watch these things thoroughly, those Lite-Brites were all indeed purloined by one particular Chris Jericho.

Mendo, I for one would love to see you incorporate that running gag in future videos.   Especially when it’s least relevant.

        • MichaelANovelli

          It’s a deal!

    • Sofie Liv

Njaah, I actually don’t think there has been any creepy comments about it at all, only very sweet compliments which indeed make me very happy.

I managed to make a ten seconds appearance where poeple both found me pretty and funny! My life goals has been accomplished! … what am I supposed to do now?

      • MichaelANovelli

        Dance?

  • $36060516

Mendo and Renegado’s reactions to the kid’s info-dump was funny and well edited.

    • MichaelANovelli

Thanks!  I felt that proper timing was needed, as that was where Danny’s contribution needed to go, but it was at a different pace than the rest of the episode.  I think it integrated well…

    • danbreunig

I really want a T-shirt now with their faces with those “I can’t believe this shit” expressions.

      • MichaelANovelli

        Well, you heard him, internet!

        • MephLord

I’m waiting for the day the Internet gets a social security number, drivers license, and protection under the first amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.

          • MichaelANovelli

            Well, in the meantime, t-shirts!

  • MichaelANovelli

So, yeah, joke about stegosaurus porn aside, that was one hell of a kick Tanya gave just then!

  • David Klopotoski

Mediterranean Cellars! I haven’t been there in years.

    • MichaelANovelli

      Explain?

  • Bob

    Sofie…Yowza!!!

    • MichaelANovelli

      Right?

  • FEnM

Okay, I know I’m replying to this way late, but… please tell me I’m not the only who loved the “Inky-Dinky Doo-Dah Morning” joke?
[I suddenly feel like dancing naked on my porch for some reason]

    • MichaelANovelli

      *I* certainly enjoyed it! 😉

  • Holy crap, you had a pretty good beard for a 9yo…

  • Deepthroat Ghoul

The urban legend that Turbo nearly killed Power Rangers is a bullshit lie. Yes, the ratings for the first half of Turbo were at an all-time low, but that was from a two-year ratings decline that had plagued the franchise since the third season of Mighty Morphin’, and made even worse by Big Bad Beetleborgs crushing Zeo. In fact, after the change of cast in “Passing the Torch” took place in the second half of Turbo, the show’s ratings started to improve for the first time in two years.

    • MichaelANovelli

Actually, most people think that Turbo almost killed Power Rangers because it sucked.

      • That, and the fact that we all know people who stopped watching because of Turbo. If In Space had followed Zeo, I would have kept watching long enough to get to the good parts.

        • MichaelANovelli

I dunno. Space was pretty laggy at times. Lame villain, too.

      • Deepthroat Ghoul

OK, did you not watch the second half of Turbo? It felt leaps and bounds better than the first half?

        • MichaelANovelli

And a wound will heal faster if you cauterize it, but setting yourself on fire still hurts.

          • Deepthroat Ghoul

Um, yeah… you didn’t answer my question.

          • MichaelANovelli

Well, if the specifics are important, yes, I did see the second half. My opinion still stands. And also, cauterizing hurts like hell. I speak from personal experience…

          • Wizkamridr

I love Super Sentai, but the Japanese version (Carranger) is pretty bad.

          • BlackieDuQuesne

Well, Carranger is a parody series, after all. (A big part of the problem with PR Turbo was that it couldn’t decide whether to follow suit or try to be serious, despite the ridiculous stock footage.)

          • Deepthroat Ghoul

But even if it was, it’s all part of the experience of growing.
