VIDEO: Super Friends! “The Lord of Middle Earth”

It’s time again for Saturday Morning Glory, Ryan Lohner’s ongoing examination of bizarre Saturday morning cartoons!

From the same wellspring of insanity that gave us “The Mysterious Moles” comes another episode of Super Friends! This time out, it finally becomes apparent just how much weed was being smoked in the writers’ room at the time, as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Wonder Twins journey into a total rip-off of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.

If your thing is watching DC superheroes being turned into trolls and having to fight spiders, snakes, dragons, and giant snails in a Random Fantasy Land lorded over by the Master, then “The Lord of Middle Earth” is just the episode for you!

Ryan lives in Sparta, New Jersey, a quaint little burg without much for kids to do except go to the movies. Thus began a lifelong love affair, as even back then he grew to love examining why a film worked, or didn't. He is a member of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and currently studying for a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science. His hobbies include running, piano, and annoying people with that damn lowercase forum user name.

As much as I loved superfriends, this episode actually gave me the creeps. I was to young to get the lord of the rings angle not that it would have mattered. And the one thing I always remember besides being creeped out was that ending. What a huge cop out! And why did they feel they needed to make it a dream, unless they thought maybe it was to dark or something.

Do you know the difference between a Rip-Off and a homage.

  • Wow, who knew that Middle Earth was in the DC universe… DAMMIT that actually sounds kinda awesome, but at least both DC and Lord of the Rings are treated with dignity now and if this was done again, it might be pretty awesome. Don’t judge me.
