Okay, I already said this on TGWTG, but none the less:

    Interesting episode and…

wow . Is this the first time, we were shown the morphing of Minako into Sailor Venus?
    If
so… WOW! Honestly? Being splitted in three entities, one of them is
wearing… well… what she is wearing then and the other two
    gymnast-dancing through her hair?
    Interesting… had something Bond-like. ^^

    I
like the review, however I might add, even if Usagi is normally the
cutest and nicest person ever, who puts others before herself…. isn’t
this an exception? I mean, apparently this Ma… Mu…. erm….
Marmarou? – guy is her first big love… the Romeo to her Juliet, the
Shinichi Kudo to her Ran Mori, the Daniel Jackson to her Samantha
Carter, the Holodoc to her Seven of Nine, the Gaius Baltar to her sexy
number six, the… erm… I guess you get the point.

So, if this is her first big love – I guess, that qualifies as a reason for actually shortly acting like an asshole.

Plus, the “Why isn’t she talking to somebody”… that can be easily explained. No, really, it can.
And the reason is: Shitty writing.
    Imagine
all those other movies, in which the conflict could have been resolved
if people would have actually talked to each other.
Prime examples: Aladdin 1,2 and 3
    Imagine,
how the first movie would have gone, if Al would have gone to Jasmine
and would have said: “Okay, Princess – just one question: Do you like
    me?”
    “Yes.”
“Okay, there is one problem… I am not a prince.
this, all this, all what you see is a Facade, made up by an all-powerful
being. I did this – yes, I’ll admit it – to woo you, but now, that I
know, that you like me, not because of my money, I’m saying to you: I am
Aladdin, the guy, you met in the streets.”

    But no.

    Imagine
how the fifth(?) season of Smallville would have gone, if Lana would
have outright said to Clark: “Hömma (means Listen up), Lionel is
blackmailing me, that he would kill you, if I would not marry Lex.”

    Just my five cents.

Otherwise, like I said – great review. ^^

My view on the Usagi shutting down after the discovery of Mamarou’s girlfriend is….that is exactly how young girls deal with love, especially if that someone is the girl’s first true love (as Mamarou obviously is). Her actions in this episode makes sense to me, though I would think Usagi would probably just project out onto her friends, being unusually clingy to them after her moment of sadness moping.

    • Magdalen

Of course it’s needed in the context of the plot. I’m not saying it isn’t- the “Great Misunderstanding” is a famous plot device used in tons of writing. However Usagi’s character is good at heart and loves her friends deeply. Yes she’s upset about Mamorou having a girlfriend- but he isn’t DEAD. That would be more understandable. This episode took the stereotype of self centered girlhood to a ridiculous extreme. Do you really think a teenage girl would leave her friend to die because she was too busy pouting about her crush? Come on, now. Even I wasn’t that bad! XD

      • CaptainCalvinCat

Honestly? I don’t think that, however I met girls who were (even in their late 20s – although you could say ‘women’ in that case) are just self-centered and going “Yeah, yeah, your problems are really interesting. Can we talk about MINE now again?”

And – to be honest – in terms of Usagi I could even understand that.

Many modern churches hold service in a gymnasium or other random building until they can get the funding for their own building.

Or maybe they ran out of budget creating the henshin graphics for Minako. 😀

    • Thomas Stockel

Yeah, they were pretty over the top, weren’t they? The gymnasts running through her hair to turn it blond was juuuuuust a bit over the top.

The reviews are always fun, but this one made me laugh more than I usually do. There just seemed to be a helluva lot of material to work with, from “Don’t eat your sadness” to “I don’t think Queen Beryl knows what she’s doing.”

      • TiakerAvelonna

I dunno…I kinda like it. Then again, we’ve already established that I like cheese, and the only thing that’s cheesier than PGSM are the musicals. XD

        • Jay_Bay

Venus’s transformation theme is the best one in the show. Best than most henshin themes anyways.

          • Magdalen

My idea is that I show everyone’s transformations in full at least once in the show- and then I edit them down the rest of the time. So you get to see them but it doesn’t consistently bloat the running time.

          • TiakerAvelonna

Good idea. I could always watch them, but I’m sure there are others who wouldn’t. And there would also be less snark…I mean commentary. 😀

          • Jay_Bay

            Or snarky commentary

      • TiakerAvelonna

The sad thing is that there is a legitimate gymnastic event using those kind of ribbons.

  • Jay_Bay

    Great review as alway, Nycea.

Ok, this may be racist and if so I apologize. It caught me off guard when the obviously not Asian priest speaks very good Japanese. I know this isn’t the first time a sentai show (yes this count as a sentai) use non-Japanese actors, but it’s interesting. So is the fact that the Japanese can cherry-pick different aspects from different religions. I’m learning so much.

    Also, Maggie or Nycea?

never under stood why it was a christian church in the 1st place. besides that i think this was filmed in California

      • The_Stig

        Japan is weird.

    • Magdalen

Christian missionaries from American are still very much a thing. 🙂 Nycea is my online name and it’s what I use for this show.

      I don’t get it….oooooooooooooh

  • Jason Withrow

Loving Myû Azama’s reactions for Makoto in this one. From the moment Usagi drags out this Tuxedo Mask as her distraction you can see Makoto dealing with the grinding realization that this bullshit is going to go on for days, and that she’s going to be there for all of them anyways. You’ve got true friendship there, you two! Sometimes irritating, often self-deluding, binge-knitting friendship.

    The best kind.

  • If only these youma learnt to attack a Sailor while she is in the middle of a transformation.

    • TiakerAvelonna

TVTropes: Transformation is a Free Action 😉

      • Jason Withrow

Tell me about it: we’re just one episode away from two of the Scouts letting go of their friend’s hand, standing up, transforming, firing energy blasts, and only then squatting back down and taking their friend’s hand again, all before she slipped down a 40 degree slope. It’s like pocket time here.

      • Is there nothing that TVTropes cannot provide the answer to?

        • TiakerAvelonna

          Not that I’ve found.

  • brett caton

I do like the fact that they stop in the middle of combat to put on their make-up, and even shout about it. Because who wants to be beaten up by a teenage girl with insufficient lippy?

    • Magdalen

      Nobody, that’s who.

    • Jay_Bay

      I know I don’t.

    • JD

      No way man.

Nice aside on the Japanese approach to religious observation. If you want to see a Japanese wedding ceremony in a Christian church where the people in attendance aren’t Christian but instead people who simply enjoy the imagery of Christianity as a neato thing, check out the 14:48 mark of this great documentary on Japanese recontextualization of American culture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUC4B5z2yBw
