We’re sorry...

This video is no longer available due to the shutdown of Blip.tv.

In which Ursa sings, Sofie sings, a mysterious man in a mask sings, and also, we talk a bit about Phantom of the Opera. Because nothing says “Happy 75th Episode!” like The Plot, It Goeth Thusly: The Song!

That movie was my first exposure ever to this thing called Phantom of the Opera!

        Nice:).

Had to see this on my honeymoon trip to London in 1995. I’m afraid I’ll have to build up some ‘Irish Courage’ before I watch this. You don’t want to know.

This video…words fail me–because it’s a bit too AWESOME! Really guys, you did great, especially performing fanfic via song.

Don’t worry about overthinking the meta–that’s the kind of thinking that reviews are made of!

Here, Ursa–I suggested to Sofie in a recent post to give a listen to the Iron Maiden song “Phantom of the Opera”–if for nothing else, to get a compact take of the plot in a quite different genre (i.e. 1980 artsy thinking-man’s British metal). And I make the same suggestion to you–it may just be a nice way to water the palette on a familiar subject.

Oh, and m’Lady–you do NOT knock Jesus Christ Superstar! 😉 Sorry, that was a little too harsh. Maybe I’ll make it up to you with a little fanart soon… But in that case I actually felt that the music fleshed out the story *because* of its very juxtaposition. If Phantom’s music directly relayed the plot, then Superstar’s music enhanced it. Different musical intentions, same level of relevance. And that’s quite a take from me since I didn’t really grow up on musicals.

But to reiterate: you did great. Happy 75th. Jill “Sursam Ursa” Bearup! Enjoy many more. Seems like a lot of you guys are having video anniversaries this year….

Woo-hoo! A great review, plus a cameo from our favorite Danish person, and it’s even (partly) a musical! I don’t know what else I could ask for. Well, maybe some explosions, or a Bollywood dance number, but that’s about it. (And yes, I had to look up “diegetic”. Now I have to work it into conversation tomorrow, somehow…)

I was actually surprised Porn Critic didn’t play the Phantom.

  • MichaelANovelli

Oh, the discussions that this prompted between Sofie and I…

  • Stephen Wigmore

Also Jesus Christ Superstar is awesome! Awesome I tell you!

(I’m starting to realise I may in a minority on this one)

    • Jill Bearup

Nah, I’ve got plenty of other comments on the amazingness of JCS. 🙂

      • Stephen Wigmore

Good! I am not alone. 🙂

        • Sofie Liv

          I think it’s amazing!

Tried to convince Jill to it as well by showing it to her.

But oh well, I showed her two musicals at my stay in Canley. Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ superstar.

She loved the one and didn’t care to much for the other, but that still means I managed to actually change her opinion about one musical and made her love it.

          I call that a win.

And hey, you can’t win all of them.

Canley… as in the suburb of most-boring-city-in-England i.e. Coventry?

          • Sofie Liv

yeah, now go and stalk the hell out of Jill.

          • Thomas Hayes

Lol, I don’t live there anymore since I left University, but it feels like a really small world sometimes.

          • MephLord

I Would Walk 1000 Miles and I Would Walk 1000 more just to be the man that walks 2000 Miles to be the man that is at your door. No I wouldn’t but at least the Proclaimers can’t sue me for that. And stalking seems like such an expensive thing to do. It interferes with actually talking to people, buying groceries, paying bills…such a damn hassle.
