VIDEO: Aladdin: The Return of Jafar (1994)

While Joey is busy making new videos, he’ll be posting older reviews with a brief intro explaining when and how they were made. This time around, it’s Joey’s hate-filled review of The Return of Jafar, a lazy, badly animated cash-in on Aladdin, and the first (and probably worst) Disney direct-to-video sequel!

I actually…. really like the animated show, saw that a lot when I was a kid.
And I down-right.. sigh, love the third movie.

No really, I adore the third Aladdin movie! when I was a kid I owned all three of them, but by far watched the third one most. That’s right, I watched the direct to VHS third Aladdin movie MORE than the original cinema movie.

I do believe the big thief gang have some-thing to do with that, I mean, those guys, at least in my eyes, are so cool!
I always had some-thing with be collections of thieves looking like they had fun! And Saluk, that is one bad-ass villain, right down to the evil moustachio, how can you not like that?

Sorry.. I to this day just really really like that movie, you could call it a guilty pleasure, but I am a bit reluctant to call it even that as I genuine believe it is good.
So yeah, I believe a solid animated show and a good third movie more than makes up for this, there is cool stuff in it, I can’t say that I hate it or any-thing.

Soon I’m going to do a crossover review for the third film since it has been brought up a lot. Not to give too much away, but I saw it a while back and found myself enjoying it more than this abomination! The show was watchable as well, I think my favorite episode had the genie split into 7 versions of himself each representing one of his personalities!

Great review and I especially loved the fact that you stopped out that old giant plastic VHS cover that every Disney film (and family films in general) used to look like.  Man did I despise those things…

    • Tedzey71

Lol, it was a dream come true!

Good stuff, I get the sense the movie was less than satisfying for you.  An hour with Gilbert Gottfried…Yeesh!

I haven’t seen this particular Disney sequel, but I do have several sitting among my VHSs. I don’t know if I ever saw them though; they were birthday presents, and I wasn’t big on American cartoons when I was little anyway.

This looks pretty horrendous though, and I wish I could say that it looks like the worst Disney movie, but it sadly wouldn’t even come close.

Incidentally (sorry, I only started watching your show recently), how much of that accent is real? It’s pretty awesome sounding!

    • Tedzey71

Well, I used to live in Staten Island for a good portion of my life and I still go down there to see family and friends. When I would perform on stage, on camera or any presentation; I would revert to a brooklyn accent. When I was doing a test review with a friend, she mentioned that it’s something I should build on. For the most part I was hamming it up for this video, but it’s relatively normal off screen 🙂

The worst part is that sometimes the DVD sequels seem to be designated to troll the fanbase and yet most of them dont have a solid reason to exist. Even bad Disney movies have received sequels with lower quality than originals (Atlantis and Pocahontas).

Pretty decent review. Hope you can recover from the 60 min of torture.

Since I reviewed this movie almost a year ago… I’m still trying to recover 😛

  • TheCrazyFish

I don’t remember disliking this movie, but it has been a looooong time. Most of what I rememebr thinking is that it wasn’t quite as good as the original, but was still okay.

    • Tedzey71

Oh, it’s not even comparable to the original; which is what made this film seem like a letdown when it first came out.

  • Youfeelingluckypunk27

It may have started it all, but it wasn’t that bad. I mean, look at ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame II’. Bad story, bad animation and an overall awful rehash of the first movie. ‘ROJ’, I’d say, is a fairly decent full-length pilot to a pretty good TV series.

    • Tedzey71

Ignoring the fact that it leads into the television series, I still think it’s a pretty bad sequel 😛

  • Yeah, this movie wasn’t exactly good. Maybe I liked it as a kid because Jafar was always my favorite Disney bad guy.

  • Ken Shinn

Kerbstomping a despised DVD…I’m gonna have to remember that!

    • Tedzey71

Lol, it was the actual VHS box; so more effort was put into smashing that crap!

Now, that I own Aladdin Part 1, 2 and 3 and watched them today, I can say, that while the return of the Jaffas – sorry, the return of Jafar might be a cheap cash-in… it wasn’t all that bad. I liked it, besides of Gilbert Godfrey singing. ^^

But my fav are the first one with all its epicness and the third one with the nice closure of Al and Jas being wedded. ^^

    • I know people feel this way about “The Return of Jafar”… I wish I could sympathize with them 😛

      • CaptainCalvinCat

Ah – no problem. ^^ I think, every one of us has a movie, that is for oneself too good to be viewed as “guilty pleasure” – because there is nothing to be ashamed or “guilty” about – but everyone says “That movie is a piece of frak.”

For me, there are 3 movies, which I geniunely like, but everyone is nagging about, how awful they’d be.
        1) Batman & Robin
        2) Catwoman
        3) the return of Jaffa.

But that’s just me, I guess – like I said – everyone of us has such movies. ^^
        What would yours be?

        • Well for me, it’s “The Fountain,” “Hulk (2003)” and any of the Scary Movies before 5!

          • CaptainCalvinCat

            There you have it.

I am no big fan of the Hulk and the Scary Movies are… not funny to me. But – whatever rocks your boat… or floats your boat?
Sometimes I can relate to Ziva David in NCIS. ^^

No, but – to be honest: I think, the Aladdin Show is cooler than the first movie. But thats just me. ^^

          • Oh absolutely! I think the show has time to explore the characters more and introduces some cool themes in middle eastern/old world mythologies

          • CaptainCalvinCat

Oh yeah – and it has plenty of opportunities to explore the relationships of the characters… Al/Jas, Al/Genie etc. ^^
