The NeverEnding Story (1984) (part 2 of 2)
Then Atreyu meets up with Morla, who’s a giant turtle. When the giant turtle appears, it causes Bastian to scream at the top of his lungs. That’s right: Bastian, reading a description of a creature in a book, is so terrified by what he pictures in his mind that he screams like a big old girl. I can’t imagine why the kids at school pick on him.
But the whole point of this is that, in the book, Atreyu actually hears Bastian’s scream. But… how… no… it can’t be!
The big turtle tells Atreyu to go talk to some other prophets or something. But they’re thousands of miles away, and a disgruntled Atreyu starts walking there. At the same time, an evil wolf is after him. Because there are always evil wolves in Generic Fantasy Land. The Evil Wolf is chasing Atreyu, and just about to catch him, when Atreyu is suddenly saved by… a giant pink poodle flying out of the sky.
I’m serious. Okay, it’s not really a poodle. As the movie explains, the creature is named Falkor, and he’s a “luckdragon”. But he basically looks like a very large poodle with a long tail and a scaly back. So, where did Falkor come from, and how did he know to swoop down from the sky to save Atreyu just now? Come on, it’s fantasy! Who needs explanations for stuff? (But I’m guessing, even though I remember very little from the novel, that Atreyu and Falkor’s first encounter has been greatly simplified from what’s in the book.)
