The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) (part 2 of 5)
We cut to our heroes in a fishing boat as they approach Isla Sorna. Spielberg does give us some breathtaking shots of the island here, although you really can’t miss when you’re shooting in Kaua’i. Eddie shows off his gigantic gun, which shoots darts that will knock a dinosaur out so fast they won’t feel the dart hit. Now, Spielberg has long surrendered to the Hollywood mentality that no one (least of all a film’s protagonists) should be able to use any kind of gun usefully. I immediately suspected here that the gun’s bulkiness will prevent Eddie from doing so. If the anticipation is killing you, you can skip down a little further to see if I was right.
Nick converses with the fishing boat captain in Spanish, and translates the news that the boat’s not sticking around and they’ll have to call him if they need to be picked up. I should point out here that they only have one satellite phone. I bet that’s going to be real useful once it’s inevitably destroyed. Nick also tells them that the islands are known in the captain’s village as Las Cinco Muertes. Now, I’ve never taken any Spanish classes and I still figured out this meant The Five Deaths, but the two supposed scientists still need it translated.
