The Last Airbender (2010) (part 7 of 10)
And now, it’s time for the other big meme of the film. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: Penis Hair!
The owner of this enchanting bob is Princess Yue, and by now you’ve probably already guessed that she’ll be completely useless, due to being a girl. While not as impressive a character as Katara, Yue on the show did have her own quiet strength, which is nowhere to be found here.
And quite impressively, the film manages to render her useless despite making her the full ruler of the Northern Water Tribe, instead of the daughter of the ruler as on the show. Once again, you’ve got to wonder just what Shyamalan’s daughter thought of him after seeing this movie.
Katara narrates some more about how her brother and Yue became “fast friends”. Translation: “We don’t have time to squeeze in a romance this late in the film, so it just happens off-screen.” This really shows again how the film suffers from following the show’s plot structure so closely. Yue only appeared in the season’s last three episodes, but on television that’s plenty of time for us to get to know her. In a movie, introducing her more than halfway through the film just ensures that no one will be the slightest bit interested in anything to do with her.
And just to show I’m not completely talking out of my ass here, I’ve come up with a way that this character could have been much better utilized: They should have had Yue join the heroes much earlier, having run away from home or left on a diplomatic mission or something. Sure, you’d have the less tolerant fans angry at the change from the source material, but that’s always the risk you run with a property like this, and could it really have been any worse than the reception the film actually got?
