Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) (part 9 of 12)

Cut to Superman circling the Empire State, and then a shot of Lex and Lenny in Luthor’s evil lair, watching Superman land. Wait. Lex Luthor’s villainous lair is at the top of the Empire State Building? Okay, what? How does a hideout like that work? So nobody’s noticed, oh, I don’t know, one of the biggest criminal masterminds of all time as he rides the elevator up to the penthouse suite every day?

Superman enters and quickly deduces there’s no bomb here, what with Lex being here at the moment. There’s not much getting past him, is there? Which makes this even more of a rip-off of that scene from the first movie, because there Lex was only bluffing about releasing poison gas and killing millions.

Lex introduces his nephew Lenny, who excitedly says, “The dude of steel!” And then, just as excitedly, “Boy, are you gonna gat it!” Like most in the audience, Superman completely ignores him.

Lex confesses that it was all a trick, calling him a “super guy”, then quite randomly adding, “Hey, you look great.” Yeah. What, have you been workin’ out or something? Oh. Yellow sun? Lighter gravity? Always makes you look like that? Well, keep it up, then.
