The flight crew quickly realize that the plane is now headed into space, and they flash terrified looks at each other. Now, here’s the thing I don’t get. As far as I can tell, their altitude control is still working. So, why couldn’t they have simply put the plane into a nosedive once they realized they couldn’t shut off the rockets? I know jack about hypersonic flight, but wouldn’t that have easily taken them back down, further into the atmosphere?
