The next morning, his shallow friend Melissa brings her feathered hair over to Jeff’s house. She has a chat with Jeff’s mom that goes into some truly banal small talk about a “birthstone ring” she just got as a birthday present from her grandmother. She then heads into the living room and finds Jeff in front of the TV with his nose buried in one of Brother Owen’s books. In an attempt to gain his attention, she puts the birthstone ring on her left hand and says, “Jeff, look at my engagement ring!” [?]

He ignores her, but she continues the charade. Eventually he looks at the ring and sees right through her sham. She admits it’s really a birthday present from Grandma, and Jeff limply tells her it’s “pretty” before returning his attention to the book. “Men!” the girl cries. “You wouldn’t know pretty if it slapped you in the face!” Stop it, you’re turning me on.
