…..wait, live action….Sailor Moon?  Da hell?

  • MichaelANovelli

    Hurray for Nycea!

  • Jay_Bay

So, this show is sending out some Kamen Rider vibes…..except WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper, sloppier….just overall terrible.  And yet, I want to watch this train wreck all.  Because I’m lazy, this review series will have to do.  Good work all around.

    • Wizkamridr

I’ve always considered Sailor Moon the female version of Super Sentai.

    • Romanticide

Didn’t the guy who was Mamoru eventually went to star in Kamen Rider?

  • The one advantage the live action has over the anime is that the Sailor hairstyles do disguise them somewhat, also a fun fact: the lady who plays Queen Beryl used to be a porn actress.

    • Jay_Bay

I think the correct response is -giggity-

    • Magdalen

Porn actress turned kid’s show villain. I’d read that biography.

I guess Traci Lords is the closest American equivalent.  Hasn’t done kids shows though I’m sure some kids watched her as the lead heroine in the SciFi Network series “First Wave.”

        • Wasn’t First Wave a story about a guy who was the only one out of over 100 test subjects who has the will to fight aliens using the Book of Nostradamus??

          • $36060516

Yeah.  She came in as co-star for season 3.

      • Well she(Aya Sugimoto) has wriiten novels with titles like The Rules of Supreme Pleasure, Immoral and Orgasm Life but no biography as of yet.

    • Wizkamridr

Super Sentai also has a tendency to use porn stars.

      • And to think in the US, former porn-stars go into things like late-night infomercials.

I don’t know if I’d rip this show as much as you would because it has a lot of cultural elements that I can’t relate to, but that doesn’t invalidate the source material.  It’s the same how I feel about a lot of foreign works; just because it seems silly or stupid to me doesn’t mean it doesn’t resonate with the target localized audience.  And what is scary to some people isn’t scary to others so while calling on surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge is beyond stupid to us, in some universe it might be a disguised tardis that has already traveled to another time and thus avoided destruction altogether.  And when Indy returned from the fridge he had already helped Doctor Who solve a time paradox in the White Chapel district and the two of them apprehended Jack the Ripper!  I’m just saying don’t judge a property without realizing the context of it’s universe.

Well technical there are rules to universe. Different universe are just unstable versions of our unverse with changes here and there(the agony booth is call the booth of agony etc) and  there can’t be true infine because everything would fall apart. I just telling what I know:).

Just so we’re clear- I LOVE this show. A lot of the riffable material is actually really fun and endearing. And amazingly this show manages to flesh out the scouts and their relationships to each other far more than the anime ever did. Yes, the technical effects are bad, but they’re not lazy. This series was clearly made with love and attention and I really enjoy it. It’s just fun to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

“Glorious and terrifying.”  Yeah, that pretty much sums that up. 🙂

    Welcome to the site, Nycea.

  • Joseph Tedesco

Oh sweet crispy jesus… they take what few things I enjoyed out of Sailor Moon like her transformation scenes and made it LAME!!!!

  • Yurifan

Welcome to the site. As a huge fan of the Salior moon anime and manga, thank you so much for riffing this odd attempt at a show.

  • jjramsey

When I saw Luna expositing to Usagi, I half-expected her to push Usagi into making a contract with her. 🙂

I’ve heard of the live-action Sailor Moon but never seen it.  Thank you so much for bringing it in to my life.  It is ridiculously funny and your commentary makes it that much better.

  • While the bad things in it are definitely BAD, I hope you point out the good things too. While the physical acting is terrible, later in the series you can really get caught up in the drama and emotional acting. There are some things plot-wise I also think the live action series did better. Your riffing is still amusing, though. 🙂

(Sorry for repeat post, goofed up. >< Feel free to delete the other two if able.)

    • Magdalen

I agree, I like the drama and plot of the live action show way more than the anime. But most of the drama comes later- can’t wait!

  • Moo

Nicely done. Goofy production (theirs, not yours), but I’m glad they’re taking risks. Ribbon kung fu is some serious stuff. BTW, you’ve got a very friendly smile.

  • Wizkamridr

Super Sentai (Power Rangers), Ultraman and Kamen Rider have a better budget and acting than this. The Japanese even did a low budget live action Ranma 1/2.

  • Totally hilarious! One correction though, that’s baby Jadeite not baby Zoisite…actually probably shouldn’t admit I know that…pretend I didn’t say anything. 😉

  • Allison Venezio

OMG…Project A-Ko?! Sorry that’s the only way I could justify the opening of Act 1, it is just like Project A-Ko. Which is the only animae I will ever claim to have seen.

  • TiakerAvelonna

You must RESPECT the ballet-fu! 😛

I am a hardcore Sailor Moon fan. I love it all; manga, anime, musicals, live action. But this was HILARIOUS. I know cheese when I see it, and PGSM is a big old ball of it. I will be watching all of the others, and I hope you do the whole series.

And to be fair, the CGI did get better the later you got into the show.

Favorite line: “I didn’t even do my hair for this video.” Keep up the good work.
