Overdrawn at the Memory Bank (1983) (part 6 of 12)

Cut to Pantsuit Control, where Apollonia is watching an instructional video on how to interface the identicube with the “HX-254”. In the video, a woman in a white labcoat explains they just “lost Watson”, who was the “best technician in the department!” For no apparent reason, there’s a “heartbeat” sound behind this footage.

The woman in the video lets loose a stream of technobabble that would put the crew of Voyager to shame. Cut to Apollonia as her VO says, “She was going too fast for me! But if I was to get Fingal out of trouble, I had to understand everything!” She punches up “additional information included in the file”. In that same “rounded-off” font, the computer displays yet another Powerpoint presentation showing the identicube and the HX-254.

Wow! Three arrows! And they’re dashed! Now that’s some sophisticated graphics!

In brief, the computer explains that while the “interface” is happening, a technician has to stay in constant contact with the identity in the cube. Doing so, there’s a danger of the technician’s identity being erased. Then it’s back to the distraught Lab Coat Woman explaining what went wrong with the Watson procedure. She says there was a “negative energy surge”, almost like “the computer sucked everything in!” Wow! So the HX-254 both sucks and blows!
