Myra Breckinridge (1970) (part 8 of 12)
We cut to Judge Buchanan in his chambers meeting with Myra and Rusty. For no reason, he’s lecturing them on the insidious nature of Communism. “No nation can long endure the onslaught of godless Communism!” he shouts. “Eternal alertness to what your neighbor is up to is the price of freedom!” Wow! What a way to deftly skewer the Establishment, man!
Judge Buchanan tells Myra to keep an eye on Rusty. “And remember, the commies will use every infernal device known to man to worm their way into our churches and supermarkets!” A black clerk enters to hand the judge something, and the camera lingers on him as he checks out Rusty. Wow! There are gay people everywhere! Isn’t that hilarious?
Continuing the oh-so-subtle parody of right-wingers, the judge says, “only the National Rifle Association stands between a free America and a Communist takeover!” He says they’re the only way to “curb the lawlessness and degenerate values as expressed by the Kremlin, and upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States!” See, he’s such a right-wing whacko that he thinks the Supreme Court is answering to the Kremlin. Now that’s right-wing! His wing is firmly on the right, yessirree.
