It’s time for Sofie to put on makeup, dress up right, and list her 10 favorite musical performances from the one and only The Muppet Show! And along the way, she reveals herself to be a woman of many talents: internet reviewer, pianist, singer, and trumpeter! No, that last thing is not a typo.

Ah, an oldie but a goodie. Well done!

    • Sofie Liv

… yeah, i know.. get a move on with new videos..
By the way I am moving apartment in the beginning of next month! I managed to find one! yay!
So I don’t have to move back to my parents, such a relief!

  • Cristiona

Not a bad list, with a fair mix of comedy and serious songs. And, damn but Time In A Bottle is horribly depressing. That was one of the great things about the Muppets: they weren’t afraid to do sad songs despite being a comedy show.

    • Sofie Liv

I also think there kind of is such a purity to the muppets that it takes very little to feel genuinely sad for them.
As Gonzo falls in love and then over-hears the person he fell in love with say. “But I didn’t mean it that way.” I’m just all. D:
Fossie gets competition as the comedian of the show, and the new guy is so good Fossie gets depressed and goes outside. Noooo! Fossie! Come back! (fossie is my fave muppets.)
So they can get away with stuff. And well, it’s the muppets! they weren’t afraid of anything! Lets have a show where-every body one by one turns into chickens! why? because we can! oki! :D

  • Ed

    Cool stuff, Sofie.

    • Sofie Liv

      Thanks :D

  • Simon

    You’re adorable.

    • Sofie Liv

      Yeas… Yeas I am.
I don’t know if you can tell, but I inject myself with muppetry or cartoons every-day to try and get that muppet/cartoon look.
I am kind of like Jason Segell that way, I really badly want to be a muppet!

  • Elizabethspectrum

I really like your opening theme, its fun :D

    • Elizabethspectrum

ooops, I meant to type that for your review of Tangled, oh well :P

      • Sofie Liv

        erh kay.
Well, if you want to know the themes, the one I use for the usual opening is a theme called. “The office.” from the movie “Brazil.”
As well, you said it, it’s fun, but I also think it gives the feeling a really messy funny room with things just being all over the place. So I thought it fitted very well with me and what I am, what my show probably is.

The background music on the text announcement on this video are “Sex and violence.” the muppets version, from a sketch where Zoot tries to play the single sax notes for this classic, only to get interrupted by Mahnamahna, who gets in the way trying to play the triangle, and apparently they both needs to write the sheet music to get this right.
        The sketch is on youtube.

  • DrWheelz

If I was doing a video like this, I thoink I would have agreed with you for the most part. There are a few others that I think deserve a pretty high spot:

To Morrow – for no other reason than it’s just fun
Six Stringed Orchestra – Scooter striving to be a star even though right now he kinda sucks
Turn The World Around – Pretty much speaks for itself.

    • Sofie Liv

As stated in the video, this list were indeed very very hard to pick out, because there’s so many songs I love, actually right now I kind of regret not having. “Believe in you.” in there.
It’s both true and fun, and well. A highlight of Jim Hensons memorial service where all of the main muppetteers sang that song with their puppets and the stage were just over flooded in all these characters, a moment of epic proportions.
But well! EVERY SINGLE EPISODE! had at least 2 or 3 songs which were EPIC!

So there is just no way to please every-one :/

      • DrWheelz

I wasn’t picking on you. I was just throwing in some of my favorites.
If you ever decide to do the top worst ones, might I suggest Sylvester Stallone singing A Bird in a Gilded Cage, or Mark Hamil singing When You Wish Upon a Star.

        • Sofie Liv

I didn’t meant to sound angry..
Just shouting out my undoing love to the muppets.. sorry. Because well, I do really love this stuff. I can become all childish around it.
Whom am I kidding, I just go nuts when-ever there’s some-thing muppet related coming towards me.

Hehe.. I should have stuffed Mark Hamil doing the “Gurgling.” on this list X)

          So many epic moments.

        • MSSinykin

Yes, but even the singers aren’t that good (as in those cases) it was still kind of funny the way the tailor the songs to fit guests who were real “non-singing” performers.

      • MaSch

Yeah, “If Just One Person” was one of the two songs I thought were severely missing from the list (and good to know that, deep down in your heart, you know that it’s true); the other one was the Inuit pig version of “Lullaby of Broadway” (btw, I would have taken “Mahna Mahna” out of the list to inculde eithger the one or the other, as I think the Sesame street version of the song exceeds the Muppet Show version – but hey, it’s your list, and it was presented very charmingly).

        • Sofie Liv

That is the problem with lists, there will always be some-thing missing or some-thing you change your mind about, and well. Then it’s just to late :/

And yeah, I sincerely regret not having “Just one person.” on this list!
It’s probably not “Mahna Mahna.” which had had to go for “Just one person.” as well, Mahna Mahna is just that tune every-one knows with such a massive appeal.

I gotta admit I did put that list together both from my favourite and trying to have an wide appeal, and well, trying to mix it up both between quiet songs and the more wild things.
But most of all, it’s just a little tribute to some-thing that I love.

  • Arcadiassx999

Nice vid! All though the Muppet songs are hit and miss with me, i do enjoy the songs from the first film The Muppet Movie, the soundtrack to which was given to me by a girl that i had dated in the 90’s, is still the coolest present i ever got. Of course all the other girls gave me nothing but that’s another story. Nice Work and it would be fun to see you do more reviews with your own added music as you tear apart the films. Laters!

    • Sofie Liv

      He, noted.
My keyboard is actually included in the video I am trying to edit together right now. I hope to some-how include the little band one day, maybe in some after credits or some-thing. I don’t know.

And well, we as women are also all different individuals! but it easy being a bitch, I mean.. guys makes it easy. When being treated like a goddess so often it’s very easy to succumb to prima donna behaviour :/
I hope i’m not like that, the only Prima Donna I like is miss Piggy, and well, at least she would do any-thing to make her frog happy, and do nice things for him…. when it fits her.

  • Olaf_the_Lofty

I was born in 1970, so I was the right age to see the Muppets when they first came out. Now the married sister’s children are discovering them too (though series IV and V have yet to be released, damn it.) I agree with you about a lot of things here, though of course everyone has their favourite. I would have put Marisa Berenson singing “You’re Always Welcome At Our House” on it, because that makes me cry with laughter.

I hope everyone spotted the Jim Henson Muppet in the shots from the Spike Milligan episode! You can see him upside-down about 13:10, and on the right dressed as an Arab about 13:40.

    • Sofie Liv

That is the wonderful thing about some-thing this great isn’t it?
The world of the muppets is so very big and rich that every-body have some-thing personal favourite about them! like, my favourite muppet is Fossie bear! my best friends favourite muppet is Animal his girlfriends favourite is Pepe! and my little-sisters is Beaker! (meh meh).. I laughed so hard when I asked her and she answered very surely Beaker X)
I was born in 89, so that is after Hensons death, but I grew up having the movies and absolutely loving them with all of my heart, watching them over and over. Then finally they began sending re-runs of the muppet show on danish tely, really freaking late at night, because Muppets by night ran by day time and was a winner in my country and all.. so I stayed up to tape the classics.

And yeas DAMN IT! release the two last seasons all ready! Now when the new movie were such a big hit they should just get a freaking move on!
Oh, and re-release of the classic movies with new extra material would be nice to. How hard can it be to hire Frank Oz and Dave Goelz to make just one commentary? I would die.. okay not die, but be severally hurt just to get that.

  • Torgeaux

    Dear Sophie,
I too love the muppets. I even remember Ralph the dog on the Jimmy Dean Show, which immediately gives away I’m older than dirt! I watched The Muppet Show religiously during the height of their popularity in the 70’s. I was amazed that it was great fun even without “the herb.” My favorite song of theirs is Kermit’s “Rainbow Song.” Yes, It’s sacarine enough to rot your teeth at 50 paces but it still gets me where I live. The best thing lately that’s involved the muppets is when I was the only adult at our annual family Christmas gathering who was willing to take my nice and nephew to see the movie. We had a great time and we all got to know one another a little bit better. I am not ashamed to say there were three kids there enjoying the show.

    • Sofie Liv

Please, as long as you love muppets you can’t be older than dirt.
My dad is almost 60 and he is one of the biggest children I know, which is what makes him so great XD

Sigh.. I have not seen that movie yet, and it pains me! it just hasn’t been released in my country yet! it will next month though, and I managed to make a couple of friends promise to go in with me. A few of them didn’t even really want to, but well.. I can be persistent.
But I hear so many great stories from people watching it, so that does really make me happy.

Keep up the adoration, it just makes life more fun living :)

      • Michael A. Novelli

Well, I still haven’t gotten to see Tintin yet, so we’re even!

  • Arakasi_99

Any discussion of the music of the Muppets wouldn’t be complete without a reference to this video:
Warning: it is a clip from Jim Henson’s memorial service. Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Kevin Clash, Steve Whitmere, Frank Oz & Dave Golez sing Jim’s favorite songs

    • Sofie Liv

Yeah I know.. i’m not going to watch that darn thing now, because it always makes me cry!

Sigh a couple of days ago I was watching the documentary “Being Elmo.” about Kevin Clash, and the moment they started showing that clip, yep, in tears again D:
An awesome documentary though, I highly recommend it.

  • Cristiona

On the comedy side, I have to say that one of the best would have to be O Danny Boy, as sung by Animal, Beeker, and the Swedish Chef.

  • Dammit, Sofie… your singing at the end brought me near to tears. Well done! ;_;

    • Sofie Liv

      hehe, thank you.
I am no Kermit the Frog though, but thank you.

Singing is also an acting form as I like to say, so well, I am more about acting with singing than getting it technically impressive.

      • Well, you really brought forth the emotion, I must say. :-)

        • Sofie Liv

You should hear me singing Yakkos nations of the world

          • …I can’t imagine crying over that one. :-/

          • Sofie Liv

But it surely would make you smile!

I don’t like making people cry more than necessary, I want to be a laughing woman.

          • NateWinchester

I, for one, am now in favor of always hearing you sing more.

  • Jm_james

Good list, I agree it’s hard to parse a list down to ten. If you were only going to have one performance by a guest star, you should have had Alice Cooper’s “Welcome to my Nightmare”. He is also a Muppet.

    • Sofie Liv

Sigh, so many individual favourites so little video.

Man I love all of these comments! So many muppet fans! it’s awesome!

    • Sofie Liv

      Well. Maybe.
I am always open to suggestions. I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to give “The Dark Crystal.” that glowing praise people seems to want me to give it.. I just.. argh.
The puppetry is astounding, the look is breathing taking and exquisite, the word is detailed and beautiful, the ideas are big, it’s an one time achievement and there’s no movie like it which has come before or after.. the movie is boring.
I mean. it’s boring to give room for all that other stuff, but for me it’s kind of like the Lord of the Rings books, where the books obviously are much more concerned about creating a “World.” rather than a “Story.” which makes the books so tedious and heavy to gnarl through.

Labyrinth how-ever, I saw that as a kid and was both astounded and amazed by it. in every-possible way. I love that movie to bits, I think it’s a perfect blend between fairytale, adventure and humour. The puppetry is still astounding, and this one is not boring.

So there you have my short thoughts on both movies. Maybe i’ll do a Jim henson month, I don’t know. I do kind of want to make an “Another top ten best muppet show songs.” simply because I adore these stories and comments I am receiving form people.

      • Dwlow812003

you are the coolest girl who ever lived :)

        • Dwlow812003

this is dave again, by the way, lol:)

          • Sofie Liv

Haha, well I am glad I have your support!

  • Kev

There are two kinds of people. People that think the Muppets are fucking awesome, and people without souls.

    • Sofie Liv

      Amen to that

  • MSSinykin

Hi Sofie this is the first time I’ve ever felt compelled to post something on this site (well I did make a tiny response below) and hope that you’ll take this the right way.
    1st) I’m loving your videos.
2nd) As one die-hard Muppet-Lover to another I feel compelled to just point out a certain factul error in your recount of the characters history. I mean this not to complain (as you clearly said this as a side note), but just to keep you and other fans a little better informed.
Specificly about the first two Muppet tv specials ever created Hey Cinderella and The Frog Prince, which you mentioned at 12:13-12:27. While the rumor that Kermit wasn’t refered to as a frog prior to those specials has been repeated for a long time even by Jim Henson himself, there is strong evidence he been called a frog as early as 1968 or even 1965. The source are a little murkey, so you might wanted to see for yourself on this page
One thing is certain though, Disney had nothing to do with the creation of either special. They just released the earliest home video editions in 1983. The first one didn’t get picked up by ABC (which BTW was not yet owned by Disney at that point) until about a year after it had already aired in Canada and only after seeing the sucess of Sesame Street’s first season. The other one seems to have been released in syndication.
Again no biggie. The relasionship between The Jim Henson Company and the Walt Disney Compay has been long and complex as have changes in the Muppets development as characters, so it’s easy to get thing confused. Anyone way I loved you list and long forward to seeing other videos from you real soon.

    • Sofie Liv

I wont pretend that I know every single detail concerning the muppets.. I wont even pretend I know every single detail about any subject I talk about really… I know a lot, I am a fan of a lot of things, and want to say a lot. Which unfortunately means slips do happen.

But, I think it’s so great there are so many muppets fan out there who cares! Muppets are beyond awesome, they deserve respect and praise! It’s great that you care!
And I am even more happy that you like my show this much. Don’t ever hesitate to point it out when silly oll me make mistakes like this. I love to get new information!

      Thank you for the interest!

  • xxstyxx

Ok…..i rewached this old video and as i saw robin the frog i had a horrible revelation…..
He is made of Kermits detached head with glued arms and legs on it. O.O
    Thats fucking scary!
