How to Get Away with Murder: Blackmail Down
Previously on How To Get Away With Murder:
- The ANTLs quit on Annalise after she refused to help spring Wes from the psych ward
- However, Phillip is blackmailing the ANTLs with footage from the Night of Covering Everyone’s Asses (Asher killing Sinclair, framing Catherine, shooting Annalise, etc) so this means they are going to be pulled back into the Cult of Annalise.
- Annalise left Wes a packet of information that will finally reveal how she knows his mother
- Laurel cried because Frank wasn’t honest about his feelings or whatever so he admitting to killing Lila to keep her from breaking up with him. That worked as well as you would think.
- I don’t know, are we still on the Hapstell case? Is Annalise still their lawyer? Or is she just pulling puppet strings for the hell of it?
In a flashback, Annalise talks with Rose, Wes’s mother, about her boss, Wallace Mahoney. Rose recalls seeing Wallace as she cleaned out his office and Annalise is satisfied. Annalise is representing Wallace in murder trial and Rose’s testimony will confirm his alibi.
In the present, Annalise disinterestedly watches Connor flail around in her office, panicking about Phillip’s blackmail email. “What do you want me to do?” she asks him. “I’m not in the video.” Connor is forced to apologize before Annalise orders Bonnie to summon the other ANTLs for an emergency meeting–except for Wes.
At least Wes won’t be the only one out of the loop. After finding out that Frank killed Lila and realizing the whole kidnapping/murder of Goth Girl wouldn’t have happened if the ANTLs knew that, Laurel storms out of Frank’s apartment and ignores his and Bonnie’s calls. She goes over to see Wes, who isn’t thrilled that his angsty brooding is being interrupted. However, Laurel offers to help Wes figure out the contents of the Mahoney packet.
At Casa Keating, the ANTls (minus Wes and Laurel, of course) have gathered to fret over what to do about Phillip. Connor receives another email: Philip wants one million dollars or else he’ll turn over the security footage to the police.
Well, at least they know this isn’t a Nigerian prince scam.
Laurel and Wes travel to Ohio (what–they don’t have any other classes?) to go to a legal library and track down the court transcripts for the Mahoney case. Speaking of which, there is another flashback to the past: Annalise coaches Rose for the witness stand but Rose worries that she will expose her fragile immigrant status if she testifies. If so, she would be deported and Wes will be all alone. Annalise meets with the Mahoney family to tell them this and offers to make Rose an anonymous witness instead. The Mahoney family is unhappy, but they agree to Rose’s terms.
In the present, Annalise and Michaela pay a visit to Caleb. They ask him to visit Catherine and see if she can give them any information on Philip. Catherine is not thrilled to see her brother since he actually believes Annalise’s convoluted story about The Night Everyone Covered Their Asses. “You were the one who was supposed to have my back,” she snaps at him before she ends their visit early.
Back in Ohio, Laurel and Wes pore over the court transcripts. Wes recognizes the name of FBI Agent Kain, who was interrogating him in the last scene of the winter finale; and discovers that his mother never testified at all. In a flashback, Annalise is ready to introduce Rose’s anonymous testimony via a live satellite feed, but Rose isn’t there. Mr. Mahoney Sr. takes Annalise asides and informs her that he only chose her to be the lawyer for the case because Annalise is a pregnant, female minority in hopes of appealing to the jury. Her botching the first witness doesn’t endear her to him anymore. “Don’t give your people a bad name,” he warns.
“What people? Black people? Women? Pregnant women? Pregnant black women?”
In the present, Bonnie reports that Caleb was unable to get any info out of Catherine. “You know we could stop? Let it all burn, go to jail,” she says. “Is this really better than that?” Annalise reminds Bonnie that type of ending will be reserved for the series finale and thinks aloud about how she never wanted children and now she’s got five de-facto ones who keep killing people.
Back in Ohio, Wes believes the Mahoney people killed his mother and made it look like a suicide as retribution for her not testifying. Obviously, Annalise felt so guilty that she helped Wes get into law school to make him America’s Next Top Lawyer. Meanwhile, Annalise tells the ANTLs that they are out of options and should go live it up before the police come knocking down their doors and everyone takes it to heart: Michaela hooks up with Caleb again, Connor tells Oliver that they should move to California together, and Annalise invites Nate over for a romantic dinner.
Laurel and Wes take a break from their research to grab a bite to eat. Wes asks about her fight with Frank. “He’s basically my father,” reveal Laurel. Laurel explains that her father is a “bad man” and she wanted to become a lawyer to do good in the world but she ended up falling for a guy who is just like the person she is trying to get away from. Wes tells Laurel that she is a good person and points out how she is always checking on him. The two share a kiss and excuse me for a second because I shipped Wes/Laurel from the beginning and it’s finally happening!!!!!
*my pterodactyl-like screeching is heard in the background*
Oh wait, Wes and Laurel quickly break apart and agree the kiss shouldn’t have happened. Dang it.
In a flashback, Annalise visits Rose and warns her that the Mahoney family is pissed and she should be careful. In the present, Laurel and Wes go over the police report of Rose’s suicide. Unfortunately for Wes, the trail ends there–the police report doesn’t not anything suspicious about the circumstances of Rose’s death.
At Casa Keating, Nate advises Annalise not to give into Phillip’s demands. She tells the ANTLs that Phillip is just mad that he was cheated out of the Hapstell inheritance and is taking it out on everyone. They let the deadline pass and unfortunately for them, Phillip just sends another email containing video footage of Annalise and Nate having dinner from the previous night. The ANTLs panic, but they are interrupted when Laurel storms in.
Laurel shows Annalise a page from the police report that suggests Wes may have killed his mother. “Is it true?” she asks.
Whoa. If Wes killed his mother , then he is the ultimate “How to Get Away With Murder”-er.
