If you’ve seen the first House of the Dead, you know it’s a terrible movie. This movie, on the other hand, is not. House of the Dead 2 is a sequel in name only, and it blows the first movie away.

I have to disagree, imo, this movie is terrible, it being one of the few movies you’ve reviewed that I’ve actually seen. Sure it’s better then the first, but that doesn’t say much.

That’s fine, I don’t expect everyone to agree.

I liked it a lot. I thought it was a nice departure from the usual zombie films where everyone is hiding from the zombies. This was taking the fight to them and doing so in a humorous way.

Plus, just about anything is better than the first one.

I actually watched this film when it premiered on SciFi, specifically because of the two leads. I liked it then, but I have a soft spot for SyFy Movies like others have a soft spot for The Asylum.

I think a main part of the reason I didn’t like it, was that it just seemed so generic. Just another generic zombie movie, in a sea full of them. Nothing special or interesting to really set it apart.

Maybe they should have called it Sorority House of The Dead?

I hear ya about shaky cam. I like the Bourne movies but the third one’s shaky came drove me up the wall. Using a steady cam throughout the film does sound like a neat idea. I heard once that Rocky was the first movie to use a steady cam, do you know whether or not that’s true?

That would have been the better title. Even though it took place mostly on a college campus there was enough at a sorority to justify it. Plus, the title would have been enough to distance itself from the first movie.

Shaky cam is a gimmick to me…an annoying one. It is supposed to represent tension but all it does it take me right out of the movie. What is even more annoying is with a lot of movies they film it normally and then add the “shake” in post. So they have a perfectly fine movie but then decide to make it look like an amateur did it. I just don’t get it.

Ugh, the Bourne movies. They have this great character with a good story and then mess it up by having the camera shake all over, quick cuts, and extreme close up fights. Stupid Paul Greengrass.

Nope, Rocky was the 3rd movie to use the Steadicam. The first was a movie called Bound for Glory. On a cool (to me at least) side note, my cameraman/friend trains under Garrett Brown, the creator of the Steadicam.

        That’s really awesome, wow!

I think there’s a time and place for shaky cam. I think it works really well in movies where there’s a surreal element. It works really well in the Aranofsky movies, which are supposed to make you confused and dizzy. But the key words are “a time and place”.I love the hell out of The Hunger Games, but the shaky cam drove me a little nuts at times, even if it did serve a purpose.

They totally ripped that “camoflage yourself with zombie guts” bit and the ‘guy who cuts off his own hand” from The Walking Dead. Boo this movie!

    • Cristiona

And Walking Dead probably stole “guy who cuts off his own hand” from the Evil Dead. Boo that comic book!

      • The_Stig

If Evil Dead 2 were a zombie movie, you might have a point.

        • Cecil_Trachenburg

          Deadites are kind of zombies.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

To be fair, guy who cuts off his hand wasn’t invented by The Walking Dead. I’m pretty sure the zombie guts thing was somewhere else as well. (and I love the Walking Dead)

Great work, Cecil! This was a ton of fun to watch. This has gotten me thinking- is Alone in the Dark 2 also decent? I’ve heard that it also has nothing to do with the original.

My experience with Uwe Boll- his movies are not even laughably bad, they’re just dull and anger-inducing.

The only thing I liked about House of the Dead was the funny Rave scene that was deleted on the theatrical release but included on the DVD (and being Canadian seeing Bif Naked having a part along with Penny Phang is nothing short of awesome). I agree that House of the Dead 2 is a much better movie, and on par with the original Saw and Resident Evil movies for being good genre films (I won’t talk about the sequels of both franchises running off the rails, that’s a rant for another day). I hope one day we get a Splatterhouse movie, I think if any horror game could make a good horror movie it’s that one.
