Factory Girl (2006) (part 5 of 10)

Commence Montage #3,491. This one can be titled the Edie on Speed Montage. The film, rather less than creatively, decides to convey Edie’s drug-augmented mental state by showing us sped-up, choppily-edited footage of Edie dancing around and jumping like an idiot.

Meanwhile, Brigid has sex with some random guy in one of the Factory off-rooms. This is also sped up, accelerating their normal thrusting motions into a kind of near-vibration that I find way funnier than anything intentionally funny in the whole movie. And I hesitate to even mention this, but the sex is shot on, you got it, black and white Super 8. Because sex with strangers is, er, gritty? Artistic?

“I told you having sex in the incinerator was a bad idea!”

Warhol wanders around, filming fornicating couples with a handheld camera. I love the way this movie engages in the tackiest kind of voyeurism and pretension one moment, and then the next moment completely looks down its nose at the voyeurism and pretension of its characters.
