‘Empire’ Announces Soundtrack for Season 2

It’s been four months since Empire went on their winter hiatus and the show finally returns March 30th! If you’ve forgotten what exactly went down on the midseason finale–and I don’t blame you because A LOT went down–remember that you can catch up on recaps on our partner site TV Juriste.

But anyways, Empire is finally returning. My life has been so empty without Cookie’s outfits, Cookie’s one-liners, Cookie’s story lines. And oh yeah, I guess I like whatever it is Terrence Howard and the rest of the cast does. But let’s be real: we’re all here to watch Cookie chew the scenery.

On top of Empire‘s return to our television screens, Entertainment Weekly reports that the show is also releasing an album featuring songs from the second half of the season on April 29th. The show released two singles to promote the album and the show as well as the track list. Let’s take a look and see if we can guess the scenario the songs will be taking place in.

1. Freedom (feat. Jussie Smollett)

This is a little easy to guess what the song is about since it’s one of the released singles. You can take a listen here:

Who’s Singing It?: Jamal Lyon.

What’s the Song About?: Based on the title and the lyrics that mention “Can’t nobody tell me how to love”, I’m guess Jamal is reaffirming his gay identity, which will no doubt disappoint Lucious who thought sex with Alicia Keys would be enough to turn Jamal straight.

Why’s He Singing It?: He decided a 70s Stevie Wonder inspired pop hit was the best way to express the sentiment of “Dad, I’m gay. I am super duper gay. Do I need to sing an Elton John inspired number to drive this point home instead?”

2. Crown (feat. Jamila Velazquez, Raquel Castro, Yani Marin)

Who’s Singing It?: Laura and the other Not So Supremes.

What’s the Song About?: Based on the title, I’m going to guess it’s going to be about how the Not So Supremes can take on Fifth Harmony and Little Mix for the title of being this generation’s Spice Girls.

Why Are They Singing It?: The show needed to pad an episode and sell some iTunes singles.

3. Look But Don’t Touch (feat. Serayah)

Who’s Singing It?: Tiana.

What’s the Song About?: Cookie’s fur coats.

Why’s She Singing It?: Tiana learns the hard way not to touch the merchandise and after Cookie thoroughly beats her with a broom, she decides to channel her pain into art.

4. Good People (feat. Jussie Smollett, Yazz)

Who’s Singing It?: Jamal and Hakeem Lyon.

What’s the Song About?: Good people. It’s exactly what it says on the tin.

Why Are They Singing It?: Jamal and Hakeem have realized that they are not good people with all of their lying, double crossing, and unknowingly impregnating their father’s ex-fiances. Actually, Jamal is a slightly better person than Hakeem.
5. Like My Daddy (feat. Jussie Smollett)

Who’s Singing It?: Jamal.

What’ s the Song About: His unresolved tensions with Lucious and his worries that he is becoming just like him.

Why’s He Singing It?: Have you seen the show?!

Who’s Singing It?: Jamal and Freda Gatz.

What’s the Song About?: Promoting this unknown character’s music career.

Why Are They Singing It?: Promoting this unknown character’s music career.
11. Got That Work (feat. Yazz)

Who’s Singing It?: Hakeem.

What’s the Song About? Whatever ‘Work’ by Rihanna and Fifth Harmony’s ‘Work From Home’ is about.

Why’s He Singing It?: The producers want to capitalize on the fact that hit songs at this time have the word ‘work’ in them.
12. Good Enough (Negrito Remix feat. Jussie Smollett)

Who’s Singing It?: Jamal.

What’s the Song About?: Finally coming into his own as a musician.

Why’s He Singing It?: To let Lucious know that Jamal doesn’t need him anymore.

Who’s Singing It?: Lucious, Jamal, and Hakeem.

What’s It About?: Being the best.

Why Are They Singing It?: Because if either one of them goes five minutes without proclaiming how they are the best, they will die from the pent up arrogance.
14. No Competition (feat. Yazz, Serayah, Jussie Smollett)

Why Are They Singing It?:  See the reason for tracks 13 and 14.
17. Turn Around (feat. Bre-Z)

Who’s Singing It?: Freda

What’s the Song About?: Freda trying to get Lucious to pay attention to her

Why’s She Singing It?: As usual, Lucious becomes obsessed with his tragic past to pay attention to anyone but himself.
18. Fabulous (feat. DMK)

Who’s Singing It?: Some yet-to-be-known character.

What’s the Song About?: Being fabulous.

Why Are They Singing It?: If you were fabulous, wouldn’t you sing about it?
19. Never Let It Die (feat. Jussie Smollett, Yazz)

Who’s Singing It?: Jamal and Hakeem.

What’s the Song About?: Their brotherly rivalry.

Why Are They Singing It?: It’s the main focus of the season so they can “never let it die”.
20. All Nite (Yo Gotti Remix) (feat. Yazz, Yo Gotti, Serayah and Jamila Velazquez)

Who’s Singing It?: Hakeem, Tiana, Laura, and some yet-to-be-known character
