CBS kills two summer shows, renews two more

extant

To the surprise of many, Halle Berry’s Extant will be returning to CBS next summer and Poppy Montgomery’s Unforgettable will not.

An average 8.4 million viewers for Extant was below expectations considering the high cost and profile of the show, but considering how profitable the Amazon partnership and overseas distribution have been for the network, CBS couldn’t let the show disappear after only a single season. Also, there’s no small amount of prestige CBS gets just for having a show with Oscar-winner Halle Berry on the air.

Unforgettable has actually been cancelled twice—after its freshman season and now. This first time, the cop drama was averaging 12.1 million, prompting various cable networks to start bidding on taking over the show before CBS reversed its decision. This summer, the show  averaged only 5.8 million viewers, and the cancellation is expected to take.

CBS’s other two summer series also learned their fates, although both were no-brainers: Under the Dome will be back and Reckless will not.

CBS is developing the James Patterson novel Zoo into a series for next summer as well.
