Better call when you have a longer f%$#ing clip, Saul
How easily entertained are you? AMC thinks 9 seconds ought to do it. That’s the entire length of this teaser clip of Better Call Saul.
But since it’s all over the internet today, apparently AMC knows exactly what it’s doing… and exactly how little it takes to get free publicity.
(A week ago I might have shaken my tiny fists at my computer screen at how easily manipulated TV reporters and bloggers are. Now I prefer to blame peer pressure.)
Better Call Saul is a prequel to Breaking Bad, taking place six years before attorney Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) meets Walter White.
For those of you aware of my feelings about prequels, I’ll say that this one seems to avoid all the traps because the storyline is not fixated on setting up the events and universe of the previous series.
In fact, the shows seem to have little to do with one another, plot-wise. Better Call Saul is more of a spinoff than a sequel, despite the six-year quantum leap. (Six years presumably chosen because it’s the longest they could possibly imagine this series running.)
As the best spinoffs do, Better Call Saul takes a side character and explores his/her life at its most interesting and transformative point. If that’s pre-Breaking Bad, so be it.
AMC must have extreme faith in the series: it’s already been renewed for a second season even though the first episode won’t premiere until February 2015.
But come on… nine seconds?
Showrunners: Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) and Peter Gould
