I think DC have a chance, given that as you point out they are scheduled to beat Marvel to the punch with the first movie in the current era (Catwoman? Supergirl? *shudder*) about a female superhero … IF they don’t screw it up and make her grimdark, like the 2011 TV pilot. I’m not hopeful.

  • Way back around 1950, when the Philippines were creating a national identity after being granted their independence after WWII, they glommed onto a whole bunch of US pop culture – including comic books. One of the ones they took a liking to was Wonder Woman. They made her their own, changing her into a teenager named Darna.

Later this year, the FIFTEENTH “Darna” movie is set to come out. There have also been three independent TV series – and a *ballet production*.

The US is still waiting for just one Wonder Woman movie…..

And half the budget of super sentai. Watched darna on YouTube. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Just my opinion.

As far as the DC Cinematic Universe, this seems like the only hope that Wonder Woman has at this point. Batman V Superman was obviously rushed, and I feel like her part was a glorified cameo. Catwoman in Dark Knight Rises had a much stronger presence than BvS, and aside from an alluded backstory, their characters had rather similar personas.

The DCU could have either made a wad of standalone movies before BvS, or made BvS a more sufficient standalone movie. It probably wasn’t worth imitating Marvel with it’s cinematic universe structure, so I would go with the latter of those two ideas. If they did that — made WW an essential part between Superman and Batman against each other at wits — instead of having them be straight adversaries, she would have had a more essential role.

Considering the route that this cinematic universe is going, there’s no reason to think that she can’t have as big as in depth of a story as Man of Steel, but the structuring is clumsy at this point. The main problem is that they have to go carte blanche with her own movie, and if it doesn’t compare to Captain America’s movies, it will be wish wash. This is the first lead heroine that we’re getting, and they have to do a good job IMO.

I’m apathetic where most DC movie are concerned. MOS just wasn’t very good, IMO, and someday I’ll get around to watching BvsS but it’s not on my to-do list. Wonder Woman might be interesting but right now for me the character has the Nolan/Snyder stench all over it.
Now Suicide Squad looks promising. I guess the answer is, DC movies have a chance, but it’s an uphill climb for me and I’ll have to take it on a case-by-case basis.
