In yet another Requested Review (we're almost done, folks), Sofie gets to review the super awesome new movie The Hobbit! ...Er, sorry, it's the decent 1977 Rankin-Bass animated TV movie, The Hobbit.
Girls and geekdom: fiction vs. reality
“The idea that there are ‘geek’ places that are a completely devoid of girls is just bullshit, and only serves to further propagate the image that girls don’t know how to have fun and don’t understand geek culture.”The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
“For those of us who have already seen LOTR, this is a nice look back at those films, and for those completely new to the trilogy, The Hobbit is a an exciting film that stands as a worthwhile story its own right.”Beowulf (2007)
“Beowulf plays like someone gave $150 million to a group of 13-year-old boys and let them run amuck.”Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
“It’s funny that in a world inhabited by iron-clad, god-like, and star-spangled superheroes, we end up with such bland and boring villains.
”GameStop: Leave our games alone
“To give a small subset of consumers a unique story experience for purely commercial reasons would be yet another element keeping the medium from be taken seriously.”The Return of the King (1980)
“His approach is cut short as he sees the reason a swarm of Orcs hasn’t gotten around to curb-stomping him into oblivion: they’re all dead. Naturally, we get a monologue explaining this, and I think even the five year olds watching at this point are probably going, ‘Move it along, goddammit, I got shit to do today!’”
