I thought nothing could be that bad, so I watched Master of Disguise. My brain hurts.
10/30/2012 4:12:59 PM
Yeah. I don't totally lose it with movies often, but this one was PHYSICALLY PAINFUL.
10/27/2012 4:07:33 PM
The really strange part is that, as an attempt to drum up interest in this movie, Sony somehow pressured Paramount into decreeing that since the film features Brent Spiner, it is also official Star Trek canon. Weird...I recall a scene from the trailer where Dana's character tries to ingratiate himself to a small child by impersonating Mike Myers as Shrek. No idea whether that bit made it into the final edit, but it struck me at the time as a poignantly sad moment, fully as memorable in its way as the "Turtle Club" scene.
10/30/2012 4:14:13 PM
... I had no idea about that Star Trek thing. Jesus tapdancing Christ.I have vague memories of a Shrek impression too, but thankfully it didn't make the final cut.

Oh dear lord. At one point I was actually considering writing a recap of this. Really glad I didn't. Yikes.Good stuff, Liam. You are made of stronger stuff than I.
10/30/2012 4:14:26 PM
No, I'm just an idiot.
10/25/2012 11:25:15 AM
Why is your mask-making friend's crotch given primary placement in his shots while on the telephone?
10/25/2012 2:46:21 AM
Why, oh why, did Brent Spiner agree to do this film? I guess his "Star Trek" residuals weren't paying the bills any more? And your violent reaction to the "turtle, turtle" scene was absolutely justified, and also hilarious. But... was that green striped sweater you're wearing in the video a subconscious attempt to make yourself look a bit like a turtle, thereby re-creating the one thing you hate and fear most, and by thus confronting it, draining it of the terrible power it still holds over your psyche?
10/30/2012 4:15:36 PM
I wish I could claim that was my thinking with the sweater, but sadly it wasn't. That's WAY too much thought to be putting into a review of The Master Of Disguise.
10/24/2012 8:22:45 PM
Oh, Liam, you're just jealous because you're not turtle-y enough for the Turtle Club! ;-)In all seriousness, though, there were two things about this movie that bugged me:1) Despite being Italian, his last name ends in a Y instead of an I. There is a version of the name "Novelli" that ends in a Y, but it comes from Hungary!2) The first half of the film explained that Pistachio made his disguises out of traditional supplies and then hypnotized himself into believing he actually was who he was disguised as, but in the rest of the film, he switched from one disguise to another basically through magic...

I'll have you know The Turtle Club isn't turtley enough for ME.
10/24/2012 7:40:50 PM
Anybody notice that Dana Carvey is doing Andy Kaufman's Foreign Man character? (Or Latka Gravas, if you like).
10/30/2012 4:17:09 PM
Latka was a creation of advanced genius next to Pistachio.
10/24/2012 6:49:06 PM
"Pistachio Disguisy." Roger Ebert once said movies that have characters with funny names usually aren't funny. The same could also be said about movies that star Dana Carvey.
10/25/2012 6:57:22 PM
Hey, Wayne's World was funny...although maybe in retrospect it was funny despite Dana rather than because of him?
10/28/2012 3:03:50 AM
Also in Wayne's World, Carvey played second fiddle to Mike Myers. Not to overpraise Mike Myers, but he's slightly better equipped to carry a movie. The thing that's bugging me is, "How is this movie only 10 years old?" If you'd asked me before watching this recap I would have sworn it's at least twice that old. I guess I've been working over-time trying to suppress any memory of it.
10/30/2012 4:18:56 PM
Mike Myers is a very funny guy. So is Dana Carvey actually, they just sometimes throw their weight behind things they should REALLY know better about.
10/24/2012 6:16:52 PM
Brent Spiner is in this? wauw! that's a thing I had compleately blacked out! among... several.. many many other things apparenlty. I think I saw this movies ones.. And yet I am not entirely sure, just.. what the.. I can't have been very old, that probably explains a lot. Also, the plot of having a master of disguise in the lead is all-ready done well! bloody mission impossible and Darkman! with their magical rubber face-masks that does not only change face-structure, but body mass and height as well! .. gotta admit, these rubber face-masks must be an updated version, I don't think I ever saw any-one change gender in Mission impossible.. I saw a black man turn into a white man, but I never saw any-one change gender.
10/25/2012 10:39:28 AM
Hearing Brent Spiner voicing the Joker in Young Justice just to me was so weird...and he also voiced the Purple Man in Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes. I just couldn't grasp him as the Joker, but thought he was pretty good as the Purple Man, since the episode Emperor Stark was one of the weirdest episodes of the entire series.
10/30/2012 4:20:48 PM
I think the people making this wrote that scene just so they could spend the day with Bo Derek.
10/24/2012 8:14:26 AM
You, sir, are a brave man. Thanks for enduring that so that I don't have to.
10/30/2012 4:21:20 PM
Bless you.
