Video Review: Beauty and the Beast (1991)

It’s the first episode of Stuff You Like, where redheaded fangirl Sursum Ursa waxes enthusiastic about movies, TV shows, and anything else that comes to mind!

She kicks things off with Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Ursa really, really loves this film. Seriously. It’s quite sweet. Join her for songs, sarcasm, recurring motifs, and character development. Belle meets Beast. Story arc ensues.

This was a special film for me as well. It was the first Christmas I had gone home to my girlfriend's (later on my wife's) home to meet the parents. We were right in the middle of that romantic love stuff so we were so into the film. Christmas and romantic love are a powerful combination and this film put us over the top. I also believe this was the first film of the Disney's fantastic '90's animated films. An yes, we've seen the Broadway production too. Thanks for the review. It was fun.

Thank you! This is definitely my favorite Disney movie, and one of my favorite movies of all times. I really liked the way you addressed some of the criticisms - Beast as abuser, Belle giving up her freedom

The Beast had to relearn reading? I don't remember that at all...

It makes the scene in the library even more of an empty gesture. "Look, there's a library! ...But I already said that you could go almost anywhere in the castle. And I have a snazzy all-seeing mirror for entertainment. And since I can't read the books mean nothing to me anyway. How many points do I get?"

The reading thing was explicit in the new, longer, including-extra-crappy-songs cut, but it's hinted at in the original, as Belle and the Beast sit down to read and it's all picture books and using a finger/paw to point at the words.

The gesture is...well, it's a gesture. She wouldn't appreciate flowers, chocolates, or promises you don't intend to keep, but she WOULD appreciate books. Just because he doesn't need them doesn't mean they aren't the nicest thing he could have given her.

Apparently he can't just nip to the shops...people get antsy when the teapot starts bartering... :D
