Reese & Alyssa were as hot as ever in this film. but I still can't recommend it because, ironically, of its villain. Some movie villains, such as John Malkovich in "In the Line of Fire" and Alan Rickman in "Die Hard," are memorable because they have interesting quirks to go with their villainy. Marky Mark, however, just overacted from his first scene. Hence, I just wanted to punch him out rather than wanting to know what drives him, they way I did with the two aforementioned baddies.

For me it was the over the top nature of Marky Mark that made the movie that much more enjoyable. If he was really scary then it may not have worked. He was acting like a spoiled child half the time and to me that showed what kind of character he was. He was a bratty musclehead who always got what he wanted. When he no longer could get what he wanted (Reese) he went batcrap crazy.

I agree with the twilight Carter Burwell comment. Very very true. Oh and I spotted the red shirt too.

His scores are just about the only good thing from the twilight movies.

I just noticed that at 2:32, one of the 'ravers' is wearing a Star Trek redshirt.Yeah, I'm weird that way.

And appears to be a relatively cute chick, at that.

Nothing better than cute girls in geekwear.

William L. Petersen will always be cooler than Marky Mark.
12/11/2011 6:47:57 AM
His coolness factor completely relies on the length and greyness of his beard.

Agree with you about Seattle weather. Among the biggest lies ever were the opening lines of the old TV show Here Come The Brides--"The bluest skies you'll ever see are in Seattle..."
12/11/2011 6:49:49 AM
I have a friend who is a cameraman in Seattle for a local newstation, so I hear all the time how awful it is out there.

It's Carter BURWELL, not "Burrell" (great score, BTW).Also, it's a long-running movie/TV tradition that any time you show someone playing a modern-day videogame, the sound effects and/or music have to be taken from either Pong or Super Mario Bros. Video games haven't had those "beep-boop-bip" sound F/X since the late 80's.As for the film, I remember liking it a lot more than I expected back in the day. Tense, well-directed, and Wahlberg truly proved he could act in that. Plus, jailbait Reese Witherspoon and Alyssa Milano! :D

Gah! I missed that I flubbed his name. Good catch. For some reason (mostly jealously, I assume) Hollywood continues to look down on videogames. Hence why every time there is a game being played in a movie it has the old "bloops and bleeps". I remember watching something a while ago where they were playing a FPS and the sounds were like something from the Atari 2600. I loved Fear right out of the gate. I thought the same as you, that it was going to be awful. However, Wahlberg's over the top acting mixed with super cute Alyssa and Reese made for a super fun time!

I was watching an episode of Kim Possible recently, and there was a scene with an arcade cabinet with 1985-era Super Mario Bros. sound effects eminating from it. Maybe it has to do with licensing the music/sound effects from the games being too expensive, or maybe it's just aging studio executives/directors who only remember games from the Atari/Nintendo era.

I wonder. Sometimes I can understand the sounds being generic (like in Rumble in the Bronx where you don't even see what game the kid is playing) but in Fear you clearly see the kid playing Street Fighter 2. You figure if they got the rights to show the game that would include the audio as well...although who knows anymore with copyright laws being downright silly.

Very amusing review - I love this film. For quite a schlocky movie there was some pretty serious talent in it wasn't there? I remember watching it when I was about 12 and just thinking that Reese Witherspoon's character just really liked rollercoasters in "that" scene before having it explained to me in graphic detail by more more worldly friend. "Fear". Not just entertaining but informative.("Embrace of the Vampire " is definately ripe for a riffing, although it might be hard to censor all the unintentionally hilarious scenes)

Thanks! Serious talent indeed! If they tried to make this movie now with the same cast the budget would have to be tripled. lol the informative roller coaster scene. They may have to start showing that in health class. Embrace would be tough to do but fun, considering there would be hours of having to edit Alyssa's naughty bits.

Fantastic choices for audio redubbing, all around.
12/10/2011 4:43:59 AM
Agreed. The Cookie Monster noises over the sloppy kissing had me in stitches!
12/10/2011 4:08:24 PM
Thanks! I was happy with that too. :)

The nature of my sense of humor is probably showing, but my personal favorite was "Fingerbang." Probably would have been funnier if I'd seen the episode before, but just recognizing Eric Cartman's voice brightened my day so much.

Sounds like we have similar tastes in humor. You should check that episode of South Park out. It's hilarious.
12/28/2011 5:12:36 PM
Amusingly I *had* seen that episode a day or two prior to watching this. So I definitely had to stifle some serious laughter. Also agreed Re: cookie monster kiss.

Thanks!
