  • This had the same issue I had with “Thor the Dark World” in which it explains things before the movie starts. I did not need to be told Winters’ story in the prologe. Just have the plot unfurl as the movie goes on.
    1) There are mysterious monsters
    2) Turtles fight monsters
    3) Turtles fight general and lose
    4) April sees the monsters at Winters’ building while reporter-ing
    5) Turtles investigate and confront Winters’ causing a monster to escape
    6) Turtles go after monster, Winters contacts foot clan to catch monsters faster and stop turtles from interfering
    7) Turtles fight foot, fight monster
    8) generals betray Winters
    9) Winters gets help from turtles to beat generals and monsters, explains to them the plot
    10) Turtles, Winters, Casey, and April fight Generals and Foot at tower to save world.
    11) same ending

With the way it is now the audience already knows what happened, just not a clear “why” and since the information is dolled out unevenly the “why” doesn’t get answered till the end and serves as a non-twist.

The movie is fine, but it has some real structure problems.

Originally the prologue was told towards the end when Winters is capturing the monsters in the vortex. They felt it slowed the movie down too much so they trimmed it and moved it to the front.

I think the plot was the biggest problem with this movie. Its convoluted, and its unrelated to anything in the Turtles-verse. Saving Shredder for a future movie was a mistake; this honestly should probably have been a straight-up reboot.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

No way. I admire them for trying to keep the continuity. Reboots are when a franchise gets so convoluted, the best way to fix it is the reset button. There wasn’t anything outstanding that needed to be redone. This way they had a history to work off instead of trying to re-explain everything. Plus, if it was a reboot with Shredder, it would have been endlessly compared to the original.

Problems aside, this is easily my second fave Turtles flick. I think it gets way too much shit, especially since we’re comparing it to Turtles 2 and 3. And now the 2014 one. Feh.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

Exactly! It feels the closest to part 1

  • filmguy450

This is my favorite of all the Turtles movies (I have yet to see the 2014 one, because eh). Strong visuals and a real sense of style that I felt was missing from the previous films. Tons of slick action and funny banter between the turtles themselves, what more could a fan want/

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

I’ve had a lot of people tell me they thought the film was ugly and had PS1 style animation/cut scenes. I don’t get it. I think the artistic style looks great and holds up very well. It doesn’t even remotely look ugly to me. Meanwhile, while I haven’t seen the Bay turtles, I think they look painted on and stick out too much from the stuff that is real on screen. (just going by what I’ve seen in commercials)

The Leo/Raph fight is worth the admission right there.

Awright, awright, I’ll give it a chance. I’ve got a sequel marathon coming up soon. I was looking for a fourth, really. It’ll pair with Beverly Hills Cop 2, Quantum of Solace, and Naked Gun 2 1/2. Never seen any of ’em.

Also Cecil, semi-random question: Favorite Back to the Future sequel? I prefer III. By a lot. You?

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

Ugh, Quantum of Solace was a good cast and good story ruined by horrendous direction.

I love part 2 and really, really dislike 3. Actually, I usually just watch 2 and then make up my own version of what happened in 3. Glad you enjoy it though!

      • Muthsarah

Wow….I know not everyone loves BttF3, but you are – I am serious – the first person I’ve ever encountered who has said they hated it. And from such a typically open-minded and happy-go-lucky guy.

I hereby advocate that you take a break from your format and make it the topic of your long-overdue debut episode of Bad Good Flicks.

        • Cecil_Trachenburg

Ha! Yeah, I’ve had a few requests to do something of that sort over the years.

I don’t hate it…I just really don’t like it. I think there are a few moments that are ok but overall it just felt forced. Plus, mix in the fact that westerns is probably my least favorite genre. (with the exception of Deadlands The Weird West)

  • Thomas Stockel

I think the reason I dismissed the film was at that point I was just burnt out from the Turtles. I wasn’t crazy about the last two films, hated the cartoons, hadn’t read the comic in years. It’s only been recently with the new series that I’ve gotten back into the franchise.

So yeah, I think even though we don’t see eye-to-eye on the second film I’ll try and track this movie down. Thanks for the recap, Cecil!

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

I know TMNT2 is a love it or hate it film so I understand. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with this one! 🙂
