VIDEO: Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters “In the Beginning...”

The Cinema Slob hijacks Mendo’s show to shine a spotlight on that shameless Power Rangers ripoff that Mendo showed a clip from in his last review. Assuming you can remember that far back.

    New episode! Woot!

  • The_Stig

Wait, so it was Original? THE GREEN CHICK USES A BAT’LETH!

    • Cinema_Slob

Actually she uses one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hook_sword

      • The_Stig

I stand corrected, but it’s still stupid.

        • Cinema_Slob

          Oh very much so.

          • The_Stig

Let’s excuse for a moment the fact that it shoots lasers. The hook sword is a shaolin weapon, and this show had exactly two things to do with anything shaolin: Fuck and All.

And the music? Screw that literal noise. Ron Wasserman or GTFO.

          • MichaelANovelli

Guys! Guys! Swastika, and Q-Tip That Shoots Boobs! Our arguments are invalid!

          • The_Stig

            Mendo’s right!

Fun Fact: The money for this series’ budget came from under creator Jim Fisher’s couch cushins.

          • MichaelANovelli

Well, that’s just good money management, right there!

          • The_Stig

It was only like 95 cents.

          • Wizkamridr

            He made power rangers awesome.

  • ChefM80

Lets see you two pick apart Super Human Samurai Cyber Squad…your minds won’t survive

    • Jay_Bay

Actually, I liked the SHSCS….at least the designs were cool.

    • MichaelANovelli

I hate to tell you this, but that show spelled “Cyber” with an S…

      • Jay_Bay

        really -looks up- well fuck…

      • ChefM80

Oh god I forgot. Thats how bad the show was my mind blocked out the piss poor spelling of the title.

  • Ya this wasn’t a rip off of Power Rangers. Just a horrible attempt at an original American Toku

    • MichaelANovelli

Just be glad we didn’t review the episode where Swinton defeated a monster by whistling very loudly, or the one with a cameo from Zsa Zsa Gabor. And yes, both of those things actually happened…

      • Jay_Bay

No way. Not the Zsa Zsa one? Can’t be real? Next you gonna tell me that Reb Brown starred in a movie last year about a killer sasquatch but Reb died from a weak ass Seagal-level neck twist…

        • MichaelANovelli

It’s true. In fact, the episode with Zsa Zsa is the one where I got the clip for the Mendo Rangers from…

  • That is not a Bat’Leth that the chick in green is using, it’s actually a chinese hook sword

  • MichaelANovelli

What can I say? It was the era of American Gladiators…

    • Thomas Stockel

Ah, American Gladiators. Man, I had such a crush on Lace back then. She was the only female Gladiator who did not look like she could break me in half.

As for Teenage yada yada yada…I do remember this, actually. And for some gawdawful reason I actually sat through that first episode. I think it was like that urge you get when you drive really slow past a serious car accident…

      • MichaelANovelli

        I liked Malibu, myself. 😉

        • Wizkamridr

I liked Siren. Too bad she killed herself.

    • Wizkamridr

Apparently they all juiced up once they “morphed”.

  • Muthsarah

Isn’t….isn’t this just too stupid to even count as a ripoff? It looks more like it’s mocking the Power Rangers, or the whole genre. Or the network. Or the audience. How could you interpret that title (and the costumes) in ANY other way?

    • MichaelANovelli

It sounds more like a Ninja Turtles rip-off to me…

    • jjramsey

Yeah, when I first saw it, I thought it was tongue-in-cheek as well.

  • Jay_Bay

    Some thoughts:

I remember this show too. I thought it was just a crazed sugar high dream I had as a kid…that sounded familiar
You gotta admit, the villain’s voice is badass

Rather have him be call Sgt. kabuki…..oh nvm, there it is
Thanks to the radio, every time I see or hear Beverly Hills Weezer pops in my head
Damn, that is Carlton right there.
Why did she touch…..seriously, what compel her to touch it
    …..eeww, alien spooge
Wait, did Carlton says “5-0” for his morph….somethingorother?
    Because….alien science
So, it goes Megacalibur > Excalibur > Soul Calibur?
Man, those body suits are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too tight
The answer to the secret identity question is this: Most of the heroes that have identites well known either have the resources to protect themselves (Iron Man, Capt America with SHIELD), are pretty damn powerful (Hulk, most of the XMen), or dont have anyone or many people that they truly care about (keep the family small or not there at all). The best example that counters all that is the new Blue Beetle.

    • MichaelANovelli

      He said, “Apollo!”

  • MephLord

Is the end scroll intentionally meant to be too fast to read and require pausing?

    • MichaelANovelli

      Did it work?

      • MephLord

        umm…no comment…

        • MichaelANovelli

If it worked, then yes. If not, no.

  • Wizkamridr

Did they ever use hand to hand combat? Or just fight from a distance because the producers were too lazy?
FYI: VR Troopers, Beetleborgs, and Samurai Squad weren’t rip-offs.

    • Usyra

They may not have been ripoffs, but the American versions WERE still obvious attempts to ride the Power Rangers popularity train with American civilian/Japanese fighting shows.

      • MichaelANovelli

And they were all gloriously nutty!

      • Wizkamridr

I see your point, just referring to the japanese versions. Troopers was 3 shows melded together: A japanese capt america, a brother and sister from the future and a space cop.

    • ChefM80

Considering VR Troopers and Beetleborgs were licensed by Saban as well to ride the wave created by Power Rangers yes they are rip offs in the vein of being pieced together series of american actors and japanese fight footage. Samurai Squad was Joey Lawrence using his popularity to get his little brother his own tv show.

  • danbreunig

Mendo, how is it that you get more and more hijacked lately?…

    • MichaelANovelli

      I blame Croatia…

  • Alexa

Well sure in some cases superheroes do reveal their secret identity, but its still kind of irresponsible to reveal it in some cases since it does put your loved ones in danger. Sure its good to tell them to which they can be prepared, but not very safe to tell the whole world in some cases, especially if you have a butt load of enemies and aren’t rich like Tony Stark and has the means to protect himself and his loved ones. Plus it would be kind of a pain in the ass to keep enemies off your trail since they could find out all of your secrets and weaknesses by not having a secret identity, thus leading to them to easily defeat you.

  • Nancytweetstv

Hey, we missed a chance to say on sunday “Chris Jericho stole all the light brites and caused the superbowl blackout”. 🙂

    • MichaelANovelli

Only because I lack foresight. 😉

  • KLLRFRST

The best example of superheroes that never hid their identities is the Fantastic Four. They never wore masks or bothered to hide their identity.
