VIDEO: Spider-Man “Rocket Racer”

It’s time for another episode of Saturday Morning Glory, where your host Ryan Lohner looks at some of the most insane moments in Saturday morning cartoon history!

Hey, kids, remember when Ryan wrote about “The Spot”, the second-worst episode of Spider-Man, the cartoon that ran on FOX Kids back in the ‘90s? Well, you’re in luck, because this time around, he looks at the worst episode of the series: “Rocket Racer”.

In it, a whiny kid gets his hands on a rocket-powered skateboard and decides to turn to a life of crime, but ends up being too much of a pussy to follow through on it. Eventually, he helps Spider-Man defeat his lamest villain ever, a guy riding around in a giant wheel. Featuring the voices of big names like Mark Hamill, Telma Hopkins, and, um, C.B. Barnes, “Rocket Racer” is an episode you won’t forget… for at least two, maybe three minutes.

Note: “Rocket Racer” is one of the select few Spider-Man episodes available on DVD. (Your luck just gets better and better!) You can find it on the compilation disc Spider-Man: The Ultimate Villain Showdown!

Ryan Lohner

Ryan lives in Sparta, New Jersey, a quaint little burg without much for kids to do except go to the movies. Thus began a lifelong love affair, as even back then he grew to love examining why a film worked, or didn’t. He is a member of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. His hobbies include running, piano, and annoying people with that damn lowercase forum user name.

The worst moment in Spider-Man history… nah, I’m pretty sure “One More Day” still holds that honor.

    Still a bad episode though.

  • Ha! Every time I think of Rocket Racer, I think the character from the Lego Racers games.

Also, I’m glad I never caught this episode when this show was on Mexico xD

When Spidey says “This really takes the cake!”, I think it’s the writers acknowledging that Big Wheel is one of the WORST Spider-Man villains ever; even the Spot was more of a believable threat. Plus, ya got Rocket Racer who looks like a Star Wars reject in the comics & an annoying racial stereotype/Nick GUTS reject in the cartoon, so yeah, I gotta agree with Spidey.
