VIDEO: The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants: The Manual

In the latest installment of Mendopiece Fanfic Theatre, we take a look at the ultimate form of fan fiction: an early ’90s Nintendo platform-based licensed game, or rather, the manual that came with it! Is this a dramatic reading of a Nintendo guidebook? A video game critique disguised as a fanfic episode? Who the hell knows?

Yeah, by this point, I’m basically just jerking you around. Sorry, but I’ve been so busy with both my upcoming 50th episode, and my Super Secret Project!

And there will be cameos. Whoever pulls an anniversary video has nearly the whole team in and out of AB dropping in, am I right? And a super secret project?! Ooh, I runneth over with wonder…

Groening probably dodged the fanrage because while he was the show’s creator, he wasn’t one of the main writers, and bore little personal responsibility for either the highs or the lows. When a fan inevitably turns against the show, they had many showrunners and head writers to turn their bile on for “ruining everything”. Lots of people place the show’s decline during Mike Scully’s tenure, for instance, while Groening was already moving on to Futurama. Lucas, on the other hand, wrote those shitty movies all by himself, and directed them, so everything that went wrong is his fault, including the casting. Same for Jim Davis, for that matter.

The marketing for The Simpsons was always huge, even by Season Two (Do the Bartman, the shitty tie-in games, the T-shirts every other kid at school had), so I’m guessing it wasn’t quite so jarring even to those who grew to hate what the show became. That said, it DOES seem a little odd that Groening isn’t getting as much hatred for how he’s continuing to market a product that a lot of former fans now hate. I suspect The Simpsons’ more gradual decline and slow alienation of its original fanbase probably provoked a far less visceral reaction (I imagine every onetime-fan of a certain age remembers the initial reactions to each and every one of those films). While Simpsons critics are tired of the show and want it cancelled yesterday,
Star Wars critics HATE the Prequel Trilogy and want it destroyed forever. And as Groening has been divorced from the show in the popular consciousness for a long time, his role in the marketing is also distanced from whatever its haters think of the show itself.

This was the game that made me bite my own knee so hard that I still limp from time to time. This game was my enemy.

Bart vs. The World was even worse, if you ask me…

  • Honestly, that NES manual seems like one of the better ones.

Better than the game, certainly. ^_^
