I love the 1991 movie “Robin Hood” starring Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman. It has great characters and is more historically accurate than the Kevin Costner version.

I tend to associate Reynard the Fox more with France than England, but I guess he may have been “imported” by the Normans. Which is interesting, considering when the stories of Robin Hood are traditionally set.

As to the question, my preferred adaptation of the Robin Hood story is a tie between Robing Hood: Prince of Thieves from 1991 (yeah, Kevin Costner is a bit iffy, but Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman are great) and the 2010 version directed by Ridley Scott (the director’s cut, not the theatrical cut).

Rockin’ the goatee I see, Joey. I approve.

Hmmmm, favorite interpretation of Robin Hood. Damn, that’s a tough call; Errol Flynn’s hasn’t aged well for me at all, and Costner’s ’91 version has all sorts of problems (i.e. no Prince John, no archery contest, no English accent from lead, etc.). I’m going to go with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn’s Robin and Marian, which is about an aging Robin Hood that returns home from the crusades after Richard dies in the field. It’s a very sad tale but I think it was well done. That movie stars Robert Shaw (Quint from Jaws), Nicol Williamson (Merlin from Excalibur), Ian Holme (Bilbo from LOTR and Ash from Alien), Richard Harris (Dumbledore ver. 1.0), and Denholm Elliot (Doctor Brody from Raiders of The Lost Ark). Hell, with a cast like that you have to work pretty hard to make a movie suck.

I’m a big fan of the 1980s Robin of Sherwood, where Maid Marian (here Marian of Leaford) is a member of the gang, and Robin is basically Pagan Jesus (and the Sheriff and Guy of Gisbourne are heavily implied to be hate-fucking each other off screen)
