Hmm She runs 100meters with the sword straight out and he never moves?

    • maarvarq

That’s what I thought. Not even an attempt at a parry.

      Added later:
      a) Maybe Mamoru was willing himself to stand still, but there didn’t seem to be any sign of internal conflict;
      b) It could have been cool if he had tried to parry and Usagi’s sword had just sliced though his;
      c) obligatory Python reference (from about 4:40) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXTFahzPBZ4

      • TiakerAvelonna

I think some very. very small part of him is still Mamoru and knows this is what needs done.

        • JD

That may be true, He helps her hold the sword knowing he can at the last hold his evil self still for a few moments.
The final sacrifice after absorbing Metallica.
im actually watching the last 2 episodes now

          • CaptainCalvinCat

            Possibility D) is forgotten.

I call it “the Jamie Summers edit”. Anyone here remembering “The six-million-dollar man” and “the bionic woman”? Whenever Steve Austin (and later on Jamie Summers) would be required to run really really fast, the camera edit chose to show us really slow movements. Slow-Mo equals Fast movements.

Here, it might be so, too – “in reality”, Usagi dashed forward in breakneck speed. ^^

          • danbreunig

Very plausible theory. The most intense moments you feel are the ones you feel stretching indefinitely. I like it.

  • JD

So its a happy Disney Ending. no lessons learned, cause Usagi gets back every thing, her friends, her family and older BF. Yea!

  • danbreunig

Wow. To think this is the last time I get to do this.

So to begin with yet another list of statements:

It’s been only a year, and it feels like a real life chapter closing. Especially because of a couple personal changes I went through this last year myself; this just makes this closing parallel to those situations.

Thank you so much Nycea–*ahem*, MAGDALEN–for bringing this series to my attention and leaving me a happier man because of it. I wasn’t into or too much aware of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon before, but your spin and presence made this the one online video series I kept coming back to, just like being a kid and catching a real TV series before VCRs. This was FUN. I was never into The X Files (the next proposed series, from what I gather) when it was on or since, but who knows? Maybe the Nycea treatment will get me to give more attention to it 🙂

Come to think of it, yours was the only Agony Booth show dedicated to a single TV series. Other reviewers have their own particular criteria–whole genres, production styles, subject matter, specific properties and histories and variations thereof, cultural standards, specific media, performance methods, commentaries, etc.–and nothing wrong with any of those–but this was the only one dedicated to one exact single stand-alone show and worked because of that. Now to anticipate what’s next for Nycea…

Sorry if I stole anyone’s thunder ahead of time; I just wanted to write this out and I’m glad I did. Plus it’s not like this is my last real comment here; I’ll keep writing something here and there, depending on how the threads run. And maybe less or more, depending on the next reviewed show. So…

I can only imagine what you’re dreaming of. Perhaps your potential Holiday Extravaganza–or should I best not inquire?

Full Theme Song. Finally! That changes the context of everything, getting to see the whole cast (heroes, anyway) in appropriate superhero fashion–rousing and happy like a superhero intro should be. Strangely there’s something nostalgic about it for me; it reminds me of Saturday afternoon fantasy/ adventure shows from the 80s and 90s more than a product of 2004.

Luna vs. Magda face segues = 2000s era Autobot vs.Decepticon symbols.

Plagiarizing unrecognized authors; not so much a crime if the author finds it so cool 😉

“It’s time for this childhood fantasy to end.” How can that one statement not be so significant?! It’s not just about the character Usagi/Moon–this is about all of us who watched and hung on through every favorite show we had right to the end.

The Scouts recite incantations while raising their tambourine-swords like they’re the Most Powerful Man In The Universe. Yep, from that era.

That bit about Magda bitching because so many use the Internet as simply a universal bitching tool:
Amen, Nycea. That’s the nail on the head.

I’ll only say that the ending wasn’t what I could expect–just that it’s a nice wrap on the prettiest package. As for the other ending…c’mon, there’s gotta be *some* kind of poetic justice, dear Nycea! :/

I think this is my longest PGSM post. And I gotta get going, so…

*My name’s on the wall!!* [holding a joyful sob]. Thanks again. And everyone else: these are some of the most engaging Booths chats I’ve had, like a real class, Advanced Sailor Moon Studies 201.

Thanks, I loved the ride, Merry Christmas and all else to everyone, and have the best 2014!
    I’ll be around.

[Guys, I goofed. I tried to vote someone else up and hit my own comment without thinking. I should be one short.]

    • JD

The 202 class gets real in depth.

      • danbreunig

It could be, for all the Sailor Moon I know outside of this. -,-

        • TiakerAvelonna

          School’s in session, noobs! 😀

      • CaptainCalvinCat

        What are 202 classes?

        • JD

          The ones after 201.

          • CaptainCalvinCat

Great – now – what are 201 classes. The ones after 200? Sorry, german guy over here, I don’t have any clue.

          • JD

basically 200 series classes are 2nd year college level classes.

    • Jason Withrow

“Come to think of it, yours was the only Agony Booth show dedicated to a single TV series.”

There was Dr O’Boogie’s written recaps of Degrassi: Junior High, but I know you’re talking about shows. Just bringing it up because they’re one of my favourite article series on the site!

      • danbreunig

Yeah, I was talking primarily video shows, although AB is starting to go back to the recaps to some degree.

I read those all the time when they were first posted. Also I had some familiarity with it because my own junior high teacher made us watch the Junior High era of Degrassi.

    • TiakerAvelonna

S’OK. I think I’m tired enough that I’ve done it a couple of times myself.

  • JD

So your not going to do the extra act or act 0?

  • TheCrazyFish

On the topic of the show trying to sell stuff to kids, even though I know it was Evil Nycea who said it and therefore it’s not to be taken too seriously, but I still want to address it.

So yeah, the marketing is pretty obvious. All of the Sailor Senshi that have weapons use what are obviously plastic toys that you can buy in stores, and the scouts that didn’t use weapons were given those silly star-shaped tambourine toys. Two of the characters themselves (Luna and Artemis) are literally toys, and then Luna becomes a catgirl just so we can get another Halloween costume to dress kids in.

But you know what? It’s really not that big a deal. This just puts Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon into the same category as any other merchandise-driven show, like G.I. Joe, Transformers, or My Little Pony. Hell, PGSM might even be a bit classier about it then some others. Putting a commercial after the end credits is a little bit better than “we’re literally only introducing this character because Hasbro wanted another action figure.” …then again, “wanting another toy to sell” is pretty much the only reason Catgirl Luna exists so nevermind.

    • JD

I’m not sure if actually watched the the original broadcast episodes on YouTube
or not but the only ads I saw were for the girls music cd’s
or special gifts for the fans

    • TiakerAvelonna

TVTropes also noted that TV toys in Japan like to make noise. Take a good close-up look at the watches they end up wearing when they transform. They have “small speakers that are usually on toys for electronic sounds on them” (quoted part from TVTropes because I’m tired). Besides those, I think the biggest offender is Princess Serenity’s sword/harp. It just screams “mass marketing toy.”

      • JD

heck every thing the girls use looks exactly like the toy should look.

        • TiakerAvelonna

I totallly want the Mars/Venus swords, though.

          • JD

I do like Mercurys weapon. not that the weapons helped them much in the end.

          • TiakerAvelonna

I do find it hard to believe that they would try to market the Jupiter staff/spear, though. That thing looks bulky as hell.

          • JD

            They will sell anything
A collectors item. But im not sure they ever sold those or you wold think you could find one for sale
            http://www.sailormooncollectibles.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/sailormoon-pgsm-gashapon-toys-collectibles.jpg

          • TiakerAvelonna

Where would you put it? It would have to be mounted on the wall like a katana or something.

Not that I would do that…>.>

          • JD

Right next to my Copy of Sting.

          • TiakerAvelonna

We do actually have two Highlander replicas; a katana and the shorter one.

          • JD

            OMG Highlander too?
            geeze
please tell me your a babylon 5 fan too.?

          • TiakerAvelonna

Not me. They came with the husband.

          • JD

            Ok gotcha 🙂

          • CaptainCalvinCat

Your husband is a highlander? ^^
I have a fine collection of sonic screwdrivers, whatever this is worth. ^^ I have the 3rds, two of the tenth, two eleventh, one of river, one of the master and the “costumize your sonic screwdriver” set, combined with the “trans temporal sonic screwdriver”.

@Nycea: This review-series was wonderful. I can savely say, that – to me – it belonged to a good saturday, to watch you and the reviews of SFDebris. But the new time slot, you’re showing the show in, is good, too.

Okay, now the show is over – yes, this is sad, but all in all, at least the shows ending was nice – but the behaviour of Mags in the end, was very dickish, though.

Thanks for showing our names at the end, in the name of the top-commenters I say thank you.
            *bows his head*

And I wish you a great, a merry christmas, many presents and peace and sanity to the world.

          • TiakerAvelonna

            Something like that. 😉

          • Magdalen

Break glass in case of Evil.

            NIce

eBay. And don’t actually ever look for them. The good shit is in the hundreds of dollars.

“It’s really not that big a deal. This just puts Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon into the same category as any other merchandise-driven show, like G.I. Joe, Transformers, or My Little Pony.”

And many people have the same problem with those shows. There used to be FCC regulations against that practice, but Ronald Reagan threw those rules in the toilet in order to please his corporate campaign contributors and paved the way for crap like He-Man. Just because it’s a nostalgic memory for some people who grew up with them doesn’t mean those were actually good shows and their marketing practices were ethical.

      • TheCrazyFish

That’s certainly true, which is why I’m glad that a lot of those old shows have been revisited by other writers who made them better.

For example, it might be true that He-Man was a ridiculous mess with a plot and characters that were built entirely around whatever new toy the producers wanted to make. But that’s why in 2002 new writers revisited the show, fleshed out the characters and story, and made something that was worthwhile for more than simply occupying little kids’ time for a half an hour every Saturday morning.

Transformers has had many revisits over the years, and of course everyone knows how Lauren Faust took My Little Pony and made it into something watchable.

        • $36060516

          Valid point!

  • Mike Smith

That was one well-done video, both you and Madga! My favorite moment of the video is the Madga cut-ins. Have me LOL every time!!!
Good luck on your next recap!

  • TiakerAvelonna

Even my husband is sad this series is over. Much love, Nycea. <3

Yay full opening. I've always liked that.

I love the scene with Usagi and Mamoru at the very start. "Idiot! You can cry now" and Usagi just absolutely breaking.

Mamoru-Metalia hits the Scouts so hard they DETRANSFORM. And are in enough pain to stay that way. That's hardcore evil.

I think the most poignant line in Act 48 is Ami saying "Don't do it. You'll never return to Usagi; you'll break." The "Oh shit" looks on Rei and Makoto's faces just add to it.

Something to bear in mind; there are rumors that the show was supposed to go a full 52 episodes plus the specials, but declining ratings led to the last three episodes getting slashed. Interpret that as you will.

I distinctly remember going "OH SNAP" when Rei gestures to get her tambourine and gets Venus' as well. The determined look on her face says it all.

I see my name! *Fangirl squee*

Thank you for this year, Nycea. I came to the party late, but I've never regretted staying. Thank you for all of your hard work, dedication, and snarky writing. 🙂 Here's to your next project and many more. Merry Christmas, and have a great New Year's.

    • JD

Yes I was surprised Nycea didnt show the Usagi breaking part.
it was very touching. and she had a very nice mourning outfit too.

      • TiakerAvelonna

I’ve wondered if it’s a real funeral kimono, as I’ve read that pictures aren’t really taken of them for…reasons.

        • JD

Not sure myself, iv dated a Japanese girl but never asked about things like that. nor
          attended a funeral with her

  • JD

Anyone else notice they changed the lyrics to the theme song in the final episodes?

    • TiakerAvelonna

Don’t they just add the second verse? O.O?

  • Jay_Bay

-whew- what a day! Thanks the gods my particular did not see too many ill willed customers than some others I know about. But with that done, and a impromptu trip to Grandma’s to have present exchange with the family, it’s now time to sit down and get some THOUGHT TIME in……and try to contain all of my feels within myself.

Better yet Mags, let Nycea sleep. Everyone should have some of that “happiness” this season….People would be a lot mellower that way.
AAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWW Nycea’s fluffy rainbow….sharknado Christmas Special sounds awesome. Wait.
And now the full intro is stuck in my he….oh nvm. Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You came back in there. Thank the Gods.
    QUACK!
Kunzite, you better stay dead this time. Asshole.
Not exactly Magda. That author, and many more amazingly weird people, are on the Top Commentors blurb right behind you. So, yay for nonplagerizing.
Dark Mamarou looking metal as fuck right now. Just saying.
Damn, Mio got Dark Slash’d like a bitch. Dark Mamarou is an OG!
I know this scene is important and touching and the feels, but all I can think about is…Mamarou is a terrible swordsman. Throughout the whole series, we see him get his ass kicked time and time again using a sword. DUDE, SIDESTEP! USE IT!
Oh hai Dark Serenity. Wonder if you was gonna show up again.
Ice Sword, Flame Daggers, Lightning Glaive….these items. I want.
Jadeite, what a pussy whipped bitch…..I’m sorry, that was uncalled for. But still, gaining Stockhelm Syndrome for Queen Beryl…
Now that’s a swerve. Game Over. The day is not saved. Earth go BOOM. Freaking DB and its incarnations doesn’t have the villains meaningfully win. This show for girls is dark as Hell.
And speaking of dark stories, the backstory on Nycea and Magda sound hella fun to read/watch/whatever.
See that Nycea. Look at what you did. You made Magda cry. Shame on you indeed.
Oh, Endyimon and Serenity are going to kiss. CUT TO FAR SHOT NOW!
ZOMG! The reunion, the hugs….ALL THE FEELS. I CAN’T CONTAIN IT ALLLLLLLL
Dat Ending……was a major SWERVE! that even Vince Russo would be jealous of.
Oh look there I am. Also, so no Act 0 or Special Act(s)?

All jokes asides, Magdalen thanks for the fun ride. I can’t realize do a speech that danbreunig didn’t do better. So I just upvote his and just say don’t let people knot up your cardigans (sort to speak), just keep on shining like a star. A Sailor Star *Thumbs Up*

    • TiakerAvelonna

I *HATED* the part where Jadeite stays with Beryl anyway. NO. BAD SHITENNOU.

      • JD

I thought it was pretty good. “Im Tired of playing Queen.”
was one of the best lines she had. and maybe Jadeite was in love with her all along even in the past life,So she never really needed to pursue Endymion at all.

  • How can consumerism ruin Xmas? Xmas is only as big as it is because of consumerism, otherwise it would just be another religious holiday.

  • “Once again the day is saved, thanks to deus ex machina…. YAAAAAAAY!”

  • Jason Withrow

    “Um, where is she?”

Well, it looks like King’s Cross station. Only… cleaner, and without all the trains.

Thanks for the year-long trip, Nycea, and for the mention on the wall! It’s been a weekly high point and definitely got me into Sailor Moon enough to want to see where the original went, and where it went from there. Does anyone have a favourite form between anime and manga in case I want to check out some more? Yes, I know about the upcoming new one.

    Final Thoughts:
Strange how Nephrite’s role in this played out (after being killed, clarifying edit) – and not just because of those shipping comments earlier, he just didn’t really seem to need to be there except to reassure the kids he was okay? Actually, it seems like Ami ran a little out of storyline towards the end. She did get a good chunk of the entire show dedicated to her, though, so maybe that evens out. That kid!Luna went nowhere was no surprise, to anyone.

Some of the weird jumps and editing choices in the penultimate to rush things to their conclusion. Makes me wonder if maybe the news they weren’t getting a renewal hit them last minute? I just finished watching another show with a similar “jagged edged” proper finale and I know that’s what happened to them. Alternately, maybe someone just realized they had forgotten a few details. I know where I’ve seen THAT: my own stuff!

It will be missed, this show. Hope to see your Korean Drama bit soon!

    • TiakerAvelonna

I kinda prefer the manga, since the writers of the anime took very, VERY large creative liberties.

      • Jason Withrow

Been there before, I will definitely keep that in mind, then!

  • TheCrazyFish

“Usagi is the protagonist. She’s supposed to be the hero, but really she’s a ticking time bomb of emotion always on the precipice of killing everyone, and it takes her boyfriend’s bravery and cunning to save the world from her intergalactic PMS.”

Oh my God, it’s so true!

  • MarineDynamite

So, now that you’re done with PGSM, are you going to start any kind of new project? Maybe something related to another transforming hero show like Pretty Cure or Saint Seiya?

  • JD

    Merry Christmas moonies

  • The_Stig

Why am I not suprrised Rei prefers to dual-wield? She probably only plays elves in D&D. You and the munchkin have a happy holiday season, Magda.

    • Magdalen

My brain automatically jumped to, “Well duh, she’s the red one. She has to dual wield just like Raphael.”

      • Jay_Bay

Damn. Why didn’t I think of that? It’s so obvious.

        • JD

          Yea so obvious…….

          • Muthsarah

            deleted becuz pointless

      • The_Stig

And yet, I still think it’s kind of hot. Anyway, farewell, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. We will never forget your batshit insanity. And Mags, we anxiously await your next review series.

    • TiakerAvelonna

*Ruins the joke with canon* Archer. Though I suppose she could be an elven archer.

      • JD

        You changed your name Robin?

        • TiakerAvelonna

On here, yeah. I sometimes reply to our CBS affiliate’s website, and they use Disqus. Just kinda didn’t like having my whole name out there. 🙂

          • JD

            ok

  • CaptainCalvinCat

Heh, the quintessence to this show is apparently the same as it is for “Battlestar Galactica (reimagined)”:. “All of this has happened before – all of this will happen again… or maybe not.”

I hope, y’all had a great christmas, mine was one and I’m looking forward to the next year.

  • quazal

Despite all things nutty and weird, I pretty much expect that out of japan, this ending was pretty good, and reminded me of the Neon Genesis a bit. For a moment I thought they might just go real dark, but happy ending after all!

This review, like all your other ones was great. And for what was suppose to be a kids show, your analysis was extremely thought provoking in many places, showing me aspects of sailor moon that didn’t even occur to me (stupid English 1990s anime dub) . This is definitely one fo my fav review series and you are one of my fav reviewer of the year! 5 out 5 crystal shard that may crack the world 🙂 Looking forward to the next awesome and odd reviews in the future, after well deserved holiday (+/- a turtle, still my fav, turtle puns).

  • Victor

So you’re not reviewing the special and zero act?
