VIDEO: Pokémon: The Original Series - Part 1

We’re sorry...

This video is no longer available due to the shutdown of Blip.tv.

In this two-part series, Sofie takes a look at something that was a big part of her childhood. She’s not the only one, though. Her fellow reviewers Film Renegado, Solkir, and Mr. Mendo also have a thing or two to say about the original Pokémon series.

between Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh I always preferred Yu-Gi-Oh. I barely saw any episodes of Pokemon and never bought any merchandise. Ash seemed really annoying and the first movie turned me off of the franchise with that endless Pikachu vs Pikachu bitch slap fest.

    • Sofie Liv

First pokemon movie made me cry…
Well, it played a big part in my childhood, as a thing that took up a lot of my time, Yu-gi-oh to me.. was just a thing that was there.

      • MephLord

I guess since I’m older than you I didn’t fit into the Pokemon demographic. It was a weird time in the late 90s when pro wrestling was big, MMA was not, Magic: The Gathering was on a bit of a downturn, comics were crashing and shark movies hadn’t yet caught on.

And as for anime the first two I remember watching and liking were Robotech and Saber Rider (that someone has uploaded to YouTube, a really underrated show). I just could not like DigiMon either so maybe I just don’t understand the appeal of the training monster genre. I can watch Astroboy and Sailor Moon though but not those two shows or Dragon Ball Z (I still get angry thinking of the time I wasted waiting for the stupid Goku/Frieza fight to finally end).

Sorry for the nerd rant, I also wasn’t aware anime was that popular in Europe (I know manga is available in Germany but didn’t know it was in other European countries as well). Are the manga sold in English or are they translated into Danish?

        • Sofie Liv

Well yeah, I was definetely the right age and straight up their demographic when this show first came out.

I am going to talk more about the other aspects of pokemon in the next video, because it wasn’t just because of the “Capture monsters.” aspect that I liked the show so much, there definetely was another reason to it.. which I am going to dig more into.

Untop of that, the show is pretty funny, in a camp sort of way, but still funny.

And yeah, we did have a wave of the mangas back in the day.

What got published in Denmark was sort of limited and elected from what the publishers thought they could sell.

But I collected both Dragon Ball, Naruto, Ranma 1/2, Hellsing, Love Hina and Tokyo mew mew when I was younger.

And I still own all of those collections.. all though, they never managed to finish publishing Hellsing… So I only got like the first five issues of that one :/

And those were translated to Danish!

And well.. Naruto is still going.. I kind of stop collecting that one after the time skip.

Bleach is published in Denmark, but I never collected it, just watched some of the anime over the enternet, and it just never caught me.

One Piece is also published in Danish, though I must admit guilty in only own very few of the issues, yet watch the anime religously.. over the enternet.. heh..

Other series though, never got translated or published in Denmark, I discovered Inuyasha through a friend whom bought the anime over Amazon, and it’s one of my most favourite Animes ever, it just never arrived here. neither in Anime nor Manga form.

So well.. most of the bigs such as Naruto and Yugi-oh, came to Denmark both in manga and anime form.

The lesser well known though, just weren’t so lucky.

But most young people in Denmark can read and understand english just fine, and England is no further away than just across the pond. So it’s not that difficult to get a hold on lesser known animes and mangas.

And it most definetely is a thing in circles since there actually quite the “Manga conventions.” culture going on here in Denmark.

My little sister would though be the better person to ask about that since she is more on top of that, she is a bit of a cosplay and convention queen, having won a couple of cosplay contests, runs the cosplay magazin D-cos and is now about to be a judge in a cosplay crafting contest… check her official face-book profil here.. https://www.facebook.com/GwanCosplay

          • MephLord

wow your sister is a very good cosplayer and I actually feel kind of dirty enjoying how awesome her costumes are…and how nice it is to see a female dork too…I’m going to shower now.

And before I go I was totally into Ranma 1/2 as well, I think that might be anime’s most underrated franchise of all time. It’s the series that really got got me into anime, and the second Ghost in the Shell movie kind of killed my love of the medium. I think it’s why I’ve gotten back into my first love that is just getting a lot better, the super hero cartoon genre. Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers, JLU, Teen Titans, to me those are the shows that have more replay value than a lot of anime

Oh and for the record, Naruto lost me a bit on the time skip too, but even worse after the botched tournament. I mean what the fuck it was just getting good when they had that bullshit happen to the Gaara vs Sasuke fight. Fuck that episode ending pissed me right off.

          • Sofie Liv

            She sure is.

I also wanted to join the fun recently, so there is a couple of costumes I am working on… she is going to take pictures next Tuesday, so well.. to be revealed XD

I freaking LOVE ranma! again, I still got the entire Manga series.. though it is in my parents attic since I don’t have to much room in my place… but dammit, love them!
They are just so much fun!

Well, I did have a phase where anime was brand new to me, and I just needed to be all into it.. then I lost interest.
Though recently, I came head-strong back watching such series as One Piece, Madoka Magica, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, count of monte cristo.. and dammit, love all of that!
            It’s great stuff!

            So yeah.. kind of into an anime flip right now -_-;

  • Muthsarah

Pokemon?!! You’re killing me, Sofie; you make me feel so old! I’m not even thirty! I don’t deserve this!

This show……uuuuuuughhhhhAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHUUUUUUHHHHHH!!!!! Child’s stuff. Should. Not. Be. Nostalgic. Yet. If. Ever.

One thing you didn’t touch upon: does it still hold up for you? Is it still good? Or just a curiosity, a (possibly/hopefully/deservedly) embarrassing relic of your childhood? I don’t wanna be hating, I really don’t, but I hafta; every electron in my body is spinning in that direction, so I’m a slave to physics. Never felt such a kinship with Mendo, FWIW. The show is….uhh….silly. Yeah. Silly.

    P.S. Really cute hair.

    • MichaelANovelli

      Kinship with me? Explain.

      • Muthsarah

Your cynicism. Your beautiful cynicism. It’s the only emotion expressed in this video that seemed even vaguely comprehensible (technically Renegado’s pain also qualifies, but it’s ephemeral, whereas this video was moreso). The Pokeemans. They are….incomprehensible. Painfully.

        • MichaelANovelli

Well, OK, then. I confess, I lost a lot of respect for this series when they went from having 150 Pokemon (with ONE that no one realized also existed, fair enough) to having upwards of 700 and counting. When it was only 150, it felt like the series was making tangible progress. Now, it’s just spinning its wheels…

          • Muthsarah

You mean it’s still going??? Pokemon??? Still??? For, like fifteen plus years? This is wrong. You know this. I’m confident you know this. This is very wrong.

P.S. Keep a watch on yer mail next coupla days. Just sayin’.

          • Sofie Liv

Yes.. it’s still going.. and Jessie and James have not given up on Pikachu yet.

          • MichaelANovelli

Must have one hell of a dental plan…

          • Sofie Liv

Or they have just become unhealthily obsessed.. it’s not like catching Pikachu is the only thing they could do with their time in the name of team rocket.

The world is full of much rare and stronger Pokemon… but no, they just want pikachu..

          • MichaelANovelli

Maybe they want to merge him with Sonic? LOL

          • Could you do me a favour Mendo and NOT remind me of my most hated person on the Internet? Ta very much!

          • MichaelANovelli

I understand where you’re coming from, but he’s not Voldemort!

          • Mike

I wouldn’t have gotten that joke if I hadn’t seen Linkara’s top 10 (or was it 11) comics I’ll never review.

          • MichaelANovelli

            I believe it’s arrived.

          • Muthsarah

Excellent. I doubt you’re an easy one to shop for, but this was the first movie that popped into mind, and nothing else challenged it. I just…kept forgetting about the whole thing. Hope you have fun with it. 🙂

    • Sofie Liv

I was surprised how much the show amused me while re-watching it.

And yes, I still enjoy this first season, there’s some real cool stuff in there, to be touch more on in my next video.

And I would call it an embarrising relic from my childhood, more it’s like a fun time I had, which I still cherise, I got nothing but warm feelings towards this show and what it brought to my childhood.

  • MichaelANovelli

Ah, Mendo and Sofie, together again!

    • Sofie Liv

Now you don’t do any-thing to make that happen.

      • MichaelANovelli

Well, we can’t be together all the time, our shtick would get stale. 🙂

  • Richard Eriksson Hjelm

Wow this was a trip down the nostalgia road

    • Sofie Liv

      Well that’s the idea :3

  • Pokemon was great at first but I lost interest as the Johto episodes dragged on, I regained my interest when they started the Hoenn league.
The scariest thing is that from October, Pokemon XY will be launched with the 6th Generation of Pokemon, I’m only truely familar with the first three gens.

    • Sofie Liv

Well… they just continue… for-ever and ever and ever and ever.

And well yeah, after a while the otherwise exciting always different show started to become formularic and kind of boring.

So yeah, Looooooved pokemon as a kid, when it was still brand new and we still had the original trio.

Stopped watching some-where in the May and Max saga.

  • Cyvaris

    101?

    • Sofie Liv

Sorry I made the mistake, I remember it as being 101, only to realise after I had posted the video it’s actuallu 150… still there was a time I could the name of all of them..

      • Cyvaris

Pedantic 151….and don’t worry I could do the same. Hell I could probably do the first three generations.

        I’m still a massive Pokemon nerd so……

        • Sofie Liv

god I really suck at this…

And well yeah, I only have fond memories of the show and gameboy game X)

          • Cyvaris

You don’t suck….I’m pathetic. 22 and still able to nitpick on these stupid things!

          • danbreunig

Trust me, that’s not pathetic. It’s that kind of nitpicking that brings us all together here, after all.

          • Sofie Liv

Beside i’m 23! So I beat you Cyvaris, and i’m the person with no life making the videos….

          • danbreunig

I’m older with less of a life and no video yet, and nitpick other universes. So who beats who? Also I’m Dan, that’s Cyvaris. So, who’s talking to who now…if he’s…and I’m…stop confusing me!

            [shaking & picking up Moscato -,- ]

          • Sofie Liv

            Well, Cyvaris was the one who thought that 22 was to old to nitpick at stuff.. and just saying, though I am not nearly the youngest here at the booth, I am still one of the younger ones.. so yeah. hehe.. some of us should get a life -_-;

          • MephLord

I am a proud nerd when being a nerd wasn’t cool. Yeah, I said it and don’t regret it. Ice, Ice, Baby.

          • danbreunig

            NERDS UNITE!!!

  • God damn this series has been going a long time! It was my first exposure to Anime and even though I don’t watch it anymore (though I’m always curious about the games, they’ve introduced a new type in Gen 6…tremble before the unspoken power of the FAIRY type!! Apparently it’ll be strong against those pesky Dragon types so that’s cool), it would still be quite a momentous occasion when it does eventually end. Bit like Elizabeth II eventually dying, the end of an era.

I too loved Team Rocket as the bumbling but loveable villains they were. They were quite the contrast from the Pokémon stealing, Cubone Mum killing, warp-pad abusing, Radio Tower hi-jacking shitheads TR were in the games! I did see a recorded convention video with Veronica Taylor and Eric Stuart (Ash/May and Brock/James respectively) and Stuart didn’t necessarily play James as gay, he wanted to play him as the third Crane brother (Frasier, Niles and James). Interesting way to put it!

I watched the series up until the end of the Johto saga, then just watched it in bits in the Hoenn saga and then stopped altogether, which oddly enough reflected me with the games since I didn’t get the games again after 3rd Gen. I’m still curious as to what is still happening seeing how it was a big part of my childhood and like childhood things that are still going, you want to see what has happened to them over the years and even though it won’t regain my interest in following it again, it’ll still remain in my subconscious as a once permanent fixture of my Saturday morning viewing. Also, there’s going to be a Cthulu Pokémon in Gen 6 so that’s awesome I guess.

  • Jerry Nava

I lost count of how many times you said “Pokemon” in this video xD

    • Sofie Liv

Well it’s a video about Pokemon so that kind of figures doesn’t it..
      And dude, Penguins! the Penguins!

  • Jerry Nava

    AND PENGUINS!

  • Gallen_Dugall

It is so refreshing to hear someone speak the truth about penguins!

    • Sofie Liv

Well duh, if Penguins of madagascar ever taught us any-thing, it is that those flight-less birds are unto us!

      • Gallen_Dugall

You are very brave to risk the wrath of the Emperors

    • danbreunig

Those Madagascar penguins don’t scare me so much as the fact that the main guy in Barnyard is a bull with an udder.

Off-topic question: that’s Scheimer as your avatar there, isn’t it?

      • Gallen_Dugall

this avatar was part of the free stuff given away at the end of the Rifftrax Live presents Jack and the Giant Killer, pretty sure it’s Jack. Very excited about this Thursday’s Rifftrax Live presentation of Starship Troopers, it’s the first time it will be in Canada

  • drumstick00m

“Why are Pokemon not ruling the world?;” ‘Tentacool & Tentacruel, ‘cthulhu f’tah.

    • Sofie Liv

      good point..

      • drumstick00m

Have yet to encounter anyone who has ever suggested they make a grim gritty dark realistic version of Pokemon, and in hindsight the reason is simple: like the Disney people, the Pokemon people beat their fan-base to the punch…

        Tentacool and Tentacruel
The three episodes with Gym Leader Sabrina and the pychic and ghost pokemon
Pokemon 3: Spell of the Unknown

I know there is more horrifying episodes, but those are the ones that come to mind…

  • hopeadope

Maan, I stopped watching around the May/Max arc as well, but now the pokemon keep looking stupider and stupider. The Dawn saga also had a pretty Gary-suish (in a bad way) rival that’s a pain to watch, unlike Gary. Not to get off track, but are you gonna review Legend of Korra? Book 2’s coming soon…

    • Sofie Liv

I am going to talk more about that in the second part of the video, so I wont go into that right now. but yeah.. yeah..

I am not planning on making a video about Legend of Korra, i’ll just be writing my initial thoughts on my face-book profil as I often do with tv-shows that I like.
You’re welcome to follow me there https://www.facebook.com/sofie.l.pedersen.7

Minor thoughts about tely and movie, I often write about on face-book, feel free to come join 🙂

  • Ian Kacprzak

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BROCK IS COOKING?????

  • danbreunig

“Don’t you know that you can’t appear anywhere on the internet without me tagging along like some kind of annoying barnacle? [smirking] Yeah–doesn’t feel so good, does it?…”

And thus the Mendo & Sofie persona role establishment comes full circle. Flucking sweet.

    • Jerry Nava

Likewise, Sofie seems to show up randomly on my videos just because she feels like it…Oh no I have the bug too!

      • Sofie Liv

        There’s a difference though.

Mendo I just like to troll.

You, I like to troll about sex.. don’t you feel special?

        • MichaelANovelli

In the inevitable Team AB porn spoof, that line will segue into a three-way…

          Rick, get on that!

          • Muthsarah

            And so will that line.

  • But are you doing the first movi…

Something something dress need to go to Convention need to go to Convention…

    What was I talking about?

  • Ursa sounded a good bit like Jesse.
