Legitimate Full-Fledged Happy Nice Time: Lily Tomlin And Jane Wagner Wed After 42 Years

OK, we know we promise nice time but then give you things like Evander Holyfield being a ridiculous bigot about teh gheys. But sometimes we can deliver actual no-strings-attached happy nice time, like letting you know that Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner got married on New Year’s Eve after being together 42 years. Some of you people are not even 42 years of age, much less having kept a successful romantic AND work partnership going for that long.

Besides their relationship, the couple’s many celebrated collaborations, written by Wagner, include Tomlin’s Tony-winning one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, which played on Broadway, toured and was filmed for the screen, as well as the movie The Incredible Shrinking Woman.

We’re going to go out on a limb and say that even if you’ve stuck it out with your significant other for 42 years, you probably did not join with your partner to create one of the most recognizable comic characters of the 1970s together.

You also probably did not win a Tony while you you were together either. And oh, what a Tony that was. The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe was authored by Wagner and put on as a one-woman Broadway show by Tomlin. Tomlin won the Best Actress Tony for it in 1986.

Have you read the play? I do not care if you do not read plays for fun. You should read this one. Lily Tomlin plays Trudy, a bag lady who helps some visiting extraterrestrials see the Earth. Every character they encounter is played by Tomlin, and the whole thing is a tangled messed-up beautiful ragged shining tale of the human condition.

Think about what it would have been like to create something that perfect with the person you love best. And then think about what it would be like to finally be able to get married after 42 years.

[Tomlin and Wagner] never thought they would see same sex marriage legal in their lifetime.

The Supreme Court’s recent rulings on DOMA and Prop 8 have paved the way for gay couples like Tomlin and Wagner to finally say, “I do.”
“You don’t really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice,” Tomlin said. “Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very very happy about it.”

Congratulations, Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner.
