VIDEO: Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

We’re sorry...

Cecil watches Killer Klowns from Outer Space, a horror comedy where humans are abducted by a race of clown-like aliens. Despite the title, this isn’t just a goofy romp with guys in clown costumes. An incredible amount of detail was put into this movie, from the amazing Klown makeup to a lot of little touches that only add to the film’s cleverness. And above all, the way they played this insane concept completely straight makes this one to watch.

First time I saw it, I showed up for the Dickies title song… stayed for the insane horror comedy.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

This was the movie that introduced me to The Dickies. Classic stuff.

Yep, this is a great flick. Top notch, man.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

Thanks! It one of the rare movies that is both funny and creepy.

  • I first saw this movie when I was a little kid, and it genuinely scared the shit out of me! I grew up on a farm, and it would get really dark at night, and I was always certain the Klowns were going to come out of the trees and get me. Now, I absolutely love this picture. It was one of the first films I bought when I got a DVD player back in 2000. I’m SO thrilled to hear they’re finally making a sequel! I hope they don’t end up depending too much on CGI.

The Chiodo brothers are massive supporters of practical effects (they even did the puppets for Team America World Police) so I’m pretty sure CGI will be kept to a minimum. Recapturing the magic of the original isn’t going to be easy but I think they can do it. After all these years I can only imagine some of the crazy designs they have in store.

Love this film. I really hope the Chiodo Bros don’t get all GCI out the wazoo and make a by the numbers shit fest. What id LOVE to see is a sequel script is something that builds up to absolute insanity say: Humans(the Main Characters) hunt Space Clowns(who hunt humans), Clowns capture humans head off to the stars, Clowns mortal enemy (ALIENS) chase Space Clowns, humans caught in the fray. I don’t want to see another “Well what all these Clowns doing in a small town” routine.
But knowing Americans, and how cheap they are, they’ll head in that direction. Sad panda is sad. You said that the possible sequel will be a remake reboot i say NO to this. This direction will fall apart say they way Evil Dead 2 is incredible while Evil Dead 3 is a over the top and less interesting. Here’s hoping the Brothers do it right!! Fun Review.

      Thanks!

I think the way they are thinking as far as a reboot/remake it like how Evil Dead 2 is a remake/reboot of Evil Dead 1. I think there is massive potential here. I like the small town approach, at least to start out the sequel. I can’t imagine this working quite as well on a city scale.

I would be interesting to see them show their home planet at some point. Even if it is just for a brief scene. How hilariously bizarre would it be to see an entire planet of Klowns?

Now that’s what I’m talking about. Years ago when i was working and living in Japan i had a dream that encompassed the sequel. The Klowns(sort of an advance patrol returns to earth (maybe for a snack)) Main characters know Klowns weakness(Their Nose) Humans go on offensive, Klowns retreat capturing main characters in the process, head to the stars.

Klowns chase after Humans in their small(ish) ship(maybe its the same as the original movie’s ship) Do the whole hide and seek thing. Klowns mortal enemies (a massive fleet) appears and gives chase, Humans confused. Klowns ship captured, Humans see aliens rounding up the Klowns, they find the aliens are eating the Klowns. Alien fleet head to their home.
The Klowns mount either a rescue mission (though id rather not see them as emotional) or a full out attack. (yea i know the budget would be larger then Michael Bays Ego) but damn that’s what i want in a sequel. I know you can say well isn’t that what Evil Dead 3 did , larger more fantastical. True. But we need to see the Klowns get it in the end, or at least have a taste on what the Klowns universe is like. Anyway it was a dream back in 1999.

Sorry for the long post. Just ambitious.

While that does sound awesome I think it goes beyond the scope of what they are trying to do. To do it right it would probably cost way more than their budget, to attempt it might make it end up looking like a Syfy original.

Although what you are proposing would make for an excellent animated movie. (which they could do) Again though, I think they just want to freak people out with guys in clown suits so this wold be beyond their cope. But who knows! Maybe the new movie will be a massive hit and they will be able to do all sorts of things with the Klowns brand.

I took a puppet fabrication class with the director, Steven Chiodo. Nice guy, and he never runs out of useful advice for making puppets and effects. I bombed out and he basically only passed me out of sheer pity. Yup, I’m busy building the connections that will last me my whole career.

I always thought that, as a b-movie buff, I should really get the inside scoop from him on Killer Klowns, but I honestly can’t think of anything to ask him about it. It’s a movie that really speaks for itself.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

That’s sweet! He really knows his stuff when it comes to puppetry and creature design. I wish he was involved with more production these days, studios are getting too lazy with CGI.

If I was in that class I would have bothered him nonstop about the movie. It’s one of those flicks I grew up with.

Has anyone told you that you’ve numbered these movies out of sequence on your video list? This one is numbered 8 along with Catwoman. Just thought you should know 😛

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

Fixed! Thanks for the heads up 🙂

I have always loved this movie as the cheesy cult classic it is. My one problem with this movie is how any one could come away with a life long fear of clowns. I know more then a few people that get all squeamish when this movie or clowns in general are mentioned. There are a few films that I have some kind of compulsion to watch every couple of years or so like the Evil Dead movies (don’t get me started on this remake) and Killer Klowns is one of those films as well. I just found that I can watch it tonight after things slow down here at the DISH call center I work at. It’s at DISHOnline.com so I can stream it whenever I like. I hear talk of some kind of Killer Klown sequel, I hope it is a sequel and not some half assed reboot. I guess only time will tell.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

I think it is more of people who already have a fear of clowns, then they see this movie and freak out. I think the Clown/Klown designs were amazing and prove how practical effects still trump CGI.

Thankfully the Chiodo brothers are handling the sequel so it’s not being rebooted by someone who used to be a music video director. I’m very optimistic that it will be everything it should.

This video was great! It is a bizarre premise, for sure. As much as I enjoy your videos I have one small critique. You speak really fast and you need to slow down a little. How many words are in the last minute of that video?

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

Thanks! Now I’m curious as to how many words I cram into these videos. Thanks for the critique. I try to keep everything moving along at a nice pace but I guess sometimes it may go a bit too quickly.

  • Really interesting idea. I don’t even like clowns and this looks like a pretty interesting take on using clowns as horror villains.

  • Earthbound_X

Yeah, I love this movie too, saw it on the Syfy(Back before the dumb name change)channel about 10 years back, I really need to get the DVD.

    • Earthbound_X

Watching this again, I just wanna give the girl who gets hurt in that outtake at the end a bug ol hug.
