VIDEO: Hulk (2003)

Imagine, if you will, a movie so boring that we can’t even think of a description for it.

“Never before have I been so bored watching a superhero movie.”

That’s saying a lot coming from the guy who reviewed both Batman serials!

    • I watched that on VHS when I was 7 or 8. I liked it a lot but we lost tape one of two and thus it was ruined forever.

Oh – I have seen a superhero movie, that was as boring as this Hulk-Outing.
Batman begins Sorry, I just found it… *gnaaaah* very sleep-inducing.

Good review. I remember seeing the movie in the theater and liking it, but I think that was more due to the fact that super hero films were still more of a novelty at the time and so I think my standards were lower. The movie hasn’t aged well for me at all since.

I don’t mind the split screen stuff, to be honest. And I think both Nick Nolte and Sam Elliott turn in great performances. Otherwise I think you nailed it. It’s a boring movie full of mostly bland characters, with an unnecessarily convoluted plot. It really doesn’t help that half the action sequences take place at night, making it very hard to tell what the hell is going on. I heard a rumor that Ang Lee was forced by the studio to add those two fights and in protest had them take place at night to make them murky. Or maybe they were just shot that way to cover up shitty CGI.

You are a brave man, I tried to watch this movie and got attacked by a raging case of naps. That it was completely mis-directed can not be questioned. But you found a redeeming virtue, good for you.

p.s. have you been reading Young Avengers? All I’m saying is… I’m buying your back story a lot more

Nice and to the point review.
Consequences. Seems like modern “big budget” films have serious problems with allowing consequences. Is this director, script or just studio execs protecting their “franchise”? Probably a combination of all of the above. Unlike you I don’t have a problem with the action scenes or the presentation style, but the character establishing dialog is horribly bland. Nobody in the film expresses any passion and Hulk characters are supposed to be a web of interconnected and twisted obsessions. Strangely the dog scene is the one that was originally most panned by fans, even though it is one of the better bits in the film, and the one scene in the film that is most faithful to the source material.
