Hot Jam: "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" (Video)

Remember little Sophie B. Hawkins? God, she was hot, with her lippy lips and her flowing hair and her facey face (WTF is a facey face? We have no idea, but she had one.) Anyway, even when we were in the fifth grade, we remember thinking she was a saucy minx. Her sultry voice and naughty lyrics inspired in us a kind of proto-Sapphism that would later bear fruit in the form of an “experimental” period, as is required for young women who go to college and/or move to Brooklyn in their early twenties (ding! ding!) Oh, Sophie B., long may your banner wave. You also had that song about Hansel and Gretel making out with each other or whatever, which we liked a lot less than this non-incestuous sex jam, but maybe Hansel and Gretel weren’t brother and sister in your version of the story? Anyway, we love you, Sappho B. Hawkins.

I still own the CD single. In younger days it was my go-to song for momentarily catharsis while mired in the angst ridden mess that is the friendzone. I alternated between this and “On My Own” from Les Miz (the ultimate friendzone anthem. Confession: I still listen to it). Also, too, how did I not know our newly crowned and beloved editor was lesbethan?

Never heard of her. Never heard (or at least noticed) her music. That must have been one of my “lost” years. It’s always amusing to rediscover what was happening here in the early ’90’s.
