Gracepoint RECAP: To Hell With It (S1:E9)

FADE IN:

INT. HOSPITAL

Carver is in the intensive care unit. But in his mind, he’s walking through a dense gray fog; there appears to be nothing material around him or under his feet. Dark, hooded, ephemeral figures waft around him.

EMMETT CARVER:
So, I guess that fucking murder case really did kill me. Am I in heaven or something? Isn’t some guardian angel supposed to guide me somewhere, or some crap like that?

One of the figures turns around and takes off her hood. She looks like Renee Clemons.

RENEE DEMON:
Who said you were in heaven? And I am not your guardian angel!

EMMETT CARVER:
Oh, great, you again.

RENEE DEMON:
The one, the only! I’m not really Renee Clemons, but I’ll be wearing this face as I torment you for all eternity because you hated her guts so much. And she kind of helped to kill you.

EMMETT CARVER:
Will she eventually end up here too?

RENEE DEMON:
Oh, absolutely. We can send you to torment her later, if you like.

EMMETT CARVER:
Well, I guess that’s fair.
(looks around)
Eh. This place isn’t any worse than Gracepoint. And the neighbors aren’t as creepy. Or as dishonest. It might not be so bad.

RENEE DEMON:
I haven’t gotten started yet.

EMMETT CARVER:
Started with what?

RENEE DEMON:
This thing.

She takes out a tiny pitchfork, about the size of dollhouse silverware.

EMMETT CARVER:
Ha! You think you can hurt me with that thing?

RENEE DEMON:
Every time I poke you with it, it gets one inch bigger. And we’ve got a long, long time.
(she pokes him, it grows an inch)
Poor little Carver!
(poke)
You’ve left so much undone.
(poke)
That little heart attack you had? You let the murderer get away!
(poke)
Just like you did back in Rosemont.
(poke)
You. Screwed. Up. Again. And it was the last thing you ever did!
(poke)
And you were oh-so-close, too!
(poke)
You know, if you’d just stayed where you belonged, in Broadchurch, this would all be over by now.
(poke)
The killer would be behind bars, and you’d be basking in great ratings and critical praise. (poke)
Here in America, you’ve managed to drag this out for two extra weeks to crappy ratings and reviewers who want you drawn and quartered for being a cheap copy.
(poke)
You are lucky I’m just poking you!

EMMETT CARVER:
Whoa, whoa! Before we continue this eternal torment, could you honor a damned man’s last request?

RENEE DEMON:
Maybe.

EMMETT CARVER:
Can I know who did it, at least? Finally?

RENEE DEMON:
Well, tell you what. Let me show you all the stuff you’ll be missing and see if you can figure it out.

She points one perfectly manicured, demonic finger towards the figures of Beth Solano and Rev. Paul Coates sitting together.

BETH SOLANO:
I j-j-j-just don’t know! I went to the sonogram… b-b-but I feel like I’m betraying Danny!

Paul holds her. A little too long. A lot too tight. With something much too close to a hard-on.

GRACEPOINT RECAP: To Hell With It (S1:E9)

EMMETT CARVER:
So it was the priest, all along?

RENEE DEMON:
Ah, I didn’t say that, did I? Look, there’s more about your creepy neighborhood pastor.

Paul Coates and Tom Miller are facing each other, both glaring.

PAUL COATES:
You know I have to turn that laptop you smashed into the detectives, don’t you?

TOM MILLER:
You give the cops my laptop, and I’ll tell them you hit Danny on our last camping trip!

PAUL COATES:
That was a spider bite!

TOM MILLER:
Yeah, that’s what everybody thinks NOW!

Emmett glares fiercely at them both.

EMMETT CARVER:
Well, one of them is lying.

RENEE DEMON:
Yes, but are you sure which one it is?

EMMETT CARVER:
Eh, I don’t have time for measly stuff like that anymore. I’m dead now. You got anything else bigger to show me, like the actual murder?

RENEE DEMON:
Well, I could show you just how weird Susan Wright really is.

EMMETT CARVER:
What, does she eat cockroaches for breakfast?

Renee Demon waves her hand, and we see Susan Wright standing quietly over Danny’s dead body as it lies on the beach. She is smoking one cigarette after another.

EMMETT CARVER:
So it WAS her! I knew there was a reason why she had his skateboard!

RENEE DEMON:
Did I say it was her?

The demon points down to a new vision: Det. Ellie Miller has Susan in the interrogation room.

ELLIE MILLER:
Spill your guts or we kill your dog!

EMMETT CARVER:
Bullshit. That’s not like Miller.

RENEE DEMON:
Oh, it’s pretty much what she said. We just took all the saccharine pretend compassion out.

SUSAN WRIGHT:
OK! OK! I’ll talk! I’ll talk! I hate cops because they destroyed my family. My husband raped my older daughter! Like, weekly! The cops took him to jail and put my kids in foster homes! I was pregnant, and CPS took my baby away because they said I was an unfit mother! My husband killed himself in prison! I hate cops!

ELLIE MILLER:
The… cops… destroyed your family???!

SUSAN WRIGHT:
And I didn’t tell nobody because that guy who dumped Danny’s body on the beach was Vince Novik, and I gotta protect him because Vince is that baby I lost! I gotta protect him from himself! He’s as violent as his daddy! My GOD I hate cops!

ELLIE MILLER:
You’re blaming us?

SUSAN WRIGHT:
Oh, maybe not you. I’ll blame that Carver guy! Nobody likes him, anyway.

EMMETT CARVER:
(slapping his head)
Vince Novik! Ah, that makes sense! Revenge! He kept asking Mark for a raise, and he never gave him one! Hey, what else can you show me about Vince?

Renee Demon waves her hand to show the Solanos chatting around the dinner table with Chloe’s boyfriend, Dean.

DEAN IVERSON:
Oh, Vince really liked Danny a lot. A whole lot. Remember when me and him and Danny all went hunting together that one time?

Dead silence at the table.

MARK SOLANO:
Say what?

DEAN IVERSON:
Uh, didn’t you know that? No? Really?
(beat)
Uh, oh. Um. A-a-a-a-awkward… I’ll be leaving now.

RENEE DEMON:
And this as well…

Ellie Miller is at the empty little hole that is her sister’s apartment. We see her giving Sara Burke some money.

SARA BURKE:
Thanks so much, sis. I owe you one. Well, more than one. Well, more than one thousand, actually… and you know damned well I will never, ever pay it back.

ELLIE MILLER:
Shut up, Sara, and tell me what you know!

SARA BURKE:
Well, I was driving around drunk the night that kid died, and I saw Mark Solano’s plumbing truck. There was some guy there, and he was carrying around this heavy, body-like thing covered by a tarp.

ELLIE MILLER:
YOU’VE BEEN WITHHOLDING THAT PIECE OF INFORMATION??????!!!!!!!!!

SARA BURKE:
Hey, I got a month’s rent out of it, didn’t I?

EMMETT CARVER:
Demon, can I get a good look at Vince’s tattoos real quick?

The Renee Demon shows him Vince Novik, lying on his bed in a muscle shirt, his arms over his head. He has “Danny” tattooed on his right arm.

EMMETT CARVER:
That’s it! We’ve got him! It’s got to be enough evidence! I’ve got to get back down there!

RENEE DEMON:
It’s no good if you do go back, Carver. Everybody hates you, and now everybody’s going to know that you have a deadly heart condition, too. It’s gonna be all over the papers.

She shows Emmett a vision of the real Renee Clemons talking to Owen Burke and Kathy Eaton.

RENEE CLEMONS:
He lost the evidence in the Rosemont trial.

EMMETT CARVER:
(bellowing at the vision)
I didn’t lose the evidence! One of the other detectives did!

RENEE DEMON:
They can’t hear you!

RENEE CLEMONS:
And now he’s screwed up this case by having a heart attack on the job. My editor won’t let me report on this anymore, but… I’m sure Gracepoint’s local press corps can finish him off! You know what to do!

KATHY EATON:
We sure do.

Renee Clemons walks out.

OWEN BURKE:
We’ll be talking to him first, won’t we?

KATHY EATON:
Only if he’s not dead.

RENEE DEMON:
So, you finally know who to arrest!
(poke)
And Kathy and Owen would be willing to give you the chance to tell the world your side of that Rosemont story.
(poke)
Oh, but you can’t! You. ARE. Dead!
(poke, poke, poke)

EMMETT CARVER:
Bah. My wife was another detective on the case. She had a pendant that was a crucial piece of evidence to get a conviction. She went off to a hotel to screw some other guy, and somebody broke in and stole that pendant. I took the fall so my daughter wouldn’t find out. You think I wanna tell the whole world that? No, thanks. I guess I’ll stay dead.

RENEE DEMON:
And the saddest thing of all… poor Carver. With you dead, you know who gets all the credit for solving this murder case now?

EMMETT CARVER:
Chief Morgan, I gu- oh. OH NO!

Vision of Ellie Miller at a press conference.

ELLIE MILLER:
And, as Gracepoint’s new lead detective, I promise that we will never again ask any of the fine, upstanding people in our community embarrassing questions that might make them feel uncomfortable or reveal their darkest secrets. Vince Novik’s arrest just gutted the Solanos, and we can’t have that again. He was their friend! They didn’t want him to be guilty! They wanted it to be a weirdo or stranger as much as I did! Now everybody is unhappy! From now on, we pledge to build our cases on gut instincts and wishful thinking, because only cold, hard people rely only on cold, hard facts.

Thunderous applause.

EMMETT CARVER:
THAT’S IT! I’m outta here! Tell the Devil he’s gonna have to wait for me!

HUGE VOICE FROM BELOW:
YOU HAVE 24 HOURS, CARVER!

EMMETT CARVER:
That’s all I need! There’s only one episode left!

Back on earth, Carver jumps out of his hospital bed, pulls on his pants, grabs the rest of his suit, and heads for the door as several protesting nurses run after him.
