FADE IN:

INT. POLICE STATION

Detective Emmett Carver is sitting in Chief Morgan’s office, alone, waiting for their weekly debriefing on the Solano case. He quietly removes a bottle of pills from his pocket, takes two, and hurriedly puts the bottle back in his pocket as the door opens, revealing Morgan and Detective Ellie Miller.

CHIEF MORGAN:
Ah, Emmett, I see you are here already.

EMMETT CARVER:
Don’t call me Emmett!

ELLIE MILLER:
Because…?

EMMETT CARVER:
Calling people by their first names is warm and friendly! I don’t do warm and friendly! I do tortured and driven!

ELLIE MILLER:
And secretly very ill.

EMMETT CARVER:
Who told you that?!

ELLIE MILLER:
Well, you looked like you were going to pass out on the docks when we picked up Dean Iverson for questioning. What was that all about, Sir?

EMMETT CARVER:
Never mind that! We’ve got a murder to solve!

CHIEF MORGAN:
Any progress on that?

ELLIE MILLER:
Oh, I think we made great progress on that this week, Chief. We’ve got two perfect suspects.

EMMETT CARVER:
By “perfect,” Chief, she means that these two are people she doesn’t know well or want to have over for dinner.

ELLIE MILLER:
Well, of course! We all know none of my friends could possibly have done this terrible thing, so of course it’s either got to be the creepy backpacker or the drug-dealing boyfriend!

CHIEF MORGAN:
Tell me what you know about these two.

EMMETT CARVER:
The backpacker is Lars Pierson, a 24-year-old Afghan war veteran. He lives in a cabin near Palmerton, but he’s been missing for a month. That’s the guy whose phone number was in Danny’s jacket. I want to find out if he’s got Danny’s skateboard or cell phone. We need to search his cabin.

CHIEF MORGAN:
I told you before, Emmett—

EMMETT CARVER:
I said DON’T CALL ME EMMETT!!

CHIEF MORGAN:
OK, Insubordinate Headcase, I might just call you unstable and put you on suspension if you don’t listen. Pierson got a general discharge from the army. For some reason that means we have to get a court order to search his cabin, and the court doesn’t think we have enough evidence.

EMMETT CARVER:
Because his phone number in Danny’s coat and Jack Reinhold’s eyewitness statement about seeing them together isn’t enough?!

CHIEF MORGAN:
Not when the writers have extended the original Broadchurch storyline to include two extra episodes, no. They need padding so we don’t solve this too quickly.

ELLIE MILLER:
I really do agree that we should look into this, sir. Beth says she met Larson. He came into the tourist center and asked about campgrounds and hunting permits. Then he looked at the portrait on her desk and said she had a beautiful family. Isn’t that terrifying, suspicious behavior?

"Anybody got any recommendations on where to hide a body around here? Uh, a friend of mine wants to know."

“Anybody got any recommendations on where to hide a body around here? Uh, a friend of mine wants to know.”

EMMETT CARVER:
Or it could be the mindless small talk you all seem to be so fond of here. Bah, I hate small talk.

ELLIE MILLER:
It would be so ideal if this backpacker killed Danny. That would really, really make my day.

CHIEF MORGAN:
Because…?

EMMETT CARVER:
Because the other suspect Ellie doesn’t know well is probably innocent.

CHIEF MORGAN:
Well, even though we can’t investigate Larson’s house, I can tell you that he was on anti-psychotic drugs. So, yeah, we’ll keep a file on him, and maybe we can investigate the cabin several episodes from now. If he’s actually guilty. Which I doubt, because this show is about how all the people in Gracepoint have dirty secrets. It’d be kind of cheap if the outsider drifter was the killer. Now, who’s that other suspect that you think is probably innocent?

ELLIE MILLER:
That’s Dean Iverson, Chloe’s boyfriend. I still think we should lock him up. Chief, not only did he score the cocaine for Chloe Solano…

EMMETT CARVER:
Because she asked him to… because Gemma Fisher asked her to…

ELLIE MILLER:
But he’s almost eighteen years old, he’s dating a fifteen-year old, and Mark and Beth don’t like it. Oh, and he’s… um…

EMMETT CARVER:
Yeah, he’s black, too. For some reason, that seems to be an issue, even though he’s got an airtight alibi.

CHIEF MORGAN:
Which is…?

EMMETT CARVER:
Dean Iverson was working in his uncle’s restaurant the night of the murder. The restaurant time clock and eyewitness testimony checks out.

"And just how long have you been black?"

“And just how long have you been black?”

ELLIE MILLER:
But Dean Iverson picked up Danny on the side of the road and took him to the drug deal!

EMMETT CARVER:
Well, Dean discovered Danny walking away from town on the side of the road by himself and picked him up so he wouldn’t get hurt. Then he stopped for gas, and Danny stole a crossword puzzle from the store. Then they scored the cocaine.

CHIEF MORGAN:
How do you know Danny stole the crossword puzzle?

EMMETT CARVER:
Video cameras caught the whole thing. It’s amazing the kid wasn’t arrested right then and there. Too bad. He might be alive now if he had been.

ELLIE MILLER:
And this heartless asshole showed that tape to the Solano family! All they had left was the illusion that their son was a sweet, innocent angel, and you shattered it! How could you do such a thing?!

EMMETT CARVER:
Well, first they asked us to reveal what we knew! So we showed them what we know, and everybody’s mad at me because I gave them what they wanted! Christ, make your mind up, people!

ELLIE MILLER:
But people only want to know nice things!

EMMETT CARVER:
And if anything nice happens, we’ll show them that, but unfortunately, Miller, everybody in this town is rotten to the core!

Mark Solano bursts into the office.

MARK SOLANO:
Chief Morgan, I want you to put a restraining order on Reverend Paul Coates! Keep him away from my family!

CHIEF MORGAN:
Um… why?

MARK SOLANO:
Because he’s getting way too close to Beth! First, they set up a memorial service for Danny behind my back! Then, he starts writing sermons about Danny! Next, he starts comforting her when I’m not around. And now Beth doesn’t want to be naked around me!

CHIEF MORGAN:
OK, too much information…

ELLIE MILLER:
Well, Beth and Paul have been close friends for a long time.

CHIEF MORGAN:
More than that, I think…

MARK SOLANO:
And I don’t want them picking up where they left off, just because I cheated on her! The only person I want Beth to get any emotional support from is me!

Reverend Paul Coates bursts into the office.

CHIEF MORGAN:
Jesus, don’t you people knock?

PAUL COATES:
Chief Morgan, I want you to put a restraining order on Raymond Connally! Keep him away from Beth Solano!

CHIEF MORGAN:
Maybe we should just put her in a nice, padded cell by herself?

EMMETT CARVER:
What, is Connally still prowling around? What did he do now?

PAUL COATES:
He’s been feeding her a bunch of crap about how he’s getting spirit messages from Danny, and he’s been trying to console her!

ELLIE MILLER:
Yes, we knew that.

PAUL COATES:
No, you don’t understand! Consoling Beth is MY job! Got that? MINE! I’ve been waiting for a chance like this for years! Beth trusts me now more than she trusts her husband! I’ve got her right where I want her! The only person I want Beth to get any emotional support from is me!

Mark lunges at Paul.

MARK SOLANO:
STAY AWAY FROM MY WIFE!

PAUL COATES:
She’ll be your ex-wife, if I get my way!

They begin to grapple. Chief Morgan tears them apart, physically.

CHIEF MORGAN:
Out of my office, now, both of you!

Two regular officers lead Mark and Paul, still squabbling, out.

CHIEF MORGAN:
(sighs deeply)
Anything else that you two actually know about?

ELLIE MILLER:
Well, my sister is having some financial issues. She’s Owen’s mother. She took all the money out of Owen’s bank account, and she hasn’t been going to therapy.

CHIEF MORGAN:
What does that have to do with the Solano case?

ELLIE MILLER:
Oh, nothing, but it does explain why Owen’s been hanging around Renee Clemons so much. She came to his house last night with a bottle of wine to discuss… his professional future. Or other stuff. I hope that doesn’t turn out to be important!
(beat)
Anyway, Chief, if we are all done here, I am going to go home to my warm, supportive husband and perfect child, who would never, ever hide any secrets from me.

EMMETT CARVER:
I thought you said Tom was looking in your purse yesterday?

"Why is mom writing "Mrs. Ellie Carver" all over her notebook?"

“Why is mom writing “Mrs. Ellie Carver” all over her notebook?”

ELLIE MILLER:
Oh, I’m sure he was just trying to find some chewing gum. He couldn’t possibly be looking up Larson’s address or locating it on Google Maps behind my back. There are no secrets at all at my house. It’s a nice, decent place.
(beat)
Oh, by the way, Carver. Joe says you have to come over for dinner.

EMMETT CARVER:
To your house?

ELLIE MILLER:
Yes, I’m afraid so.

EMMETT CARVER:
—— Uh…

ELLIE MILLER:
Yeah, I know. I don’t like it either. Maybe he’s trying to teach you not to be such an overbearing asshole. Say yes, and let’s get this over with.

EMMETT CARVER:
Yes.
(eyes bug out as wide as saucers)
What will we talk about?

ELLIE MILLER:
Probably your table manners.

CHIEF MORGAN:
Anything else before we go?

EMMETT CARVER:
Well, I returned the Harvey Ridge cabin keys to Susan Wright.

ELLIE MILLER:
That woman is creepy. She looks like she could break a chicken’s neck with her bare hands, and then invite Mark’s apprentice, Vince, over for dinner. I bet he wouldn’t go, though. He probably doesn’t want to have anything to do with her.

EMMETT CARVER:
Isn’t your son, Tom, friends with Vince?

ELLIE MILLER:
Oh, Tom just asked Vince to fix his skateboard. He’s very good at fixing skateboards. But he wouldn’t lock the door behind Tom as soon as he entered Vince’s house or anything scary like that.

EMMETT CARVER:
Susan Wright lied about giving Mark the keys to the hut. She also paid him for the plumbing. So there’s stuff we don’t know about her. We’ll keep an eye on her.

INT. INN

Carver is looking at Julianne’s number on his cell phone. Gemma Fisher plops herself down beside him.

GEMMA FISHER:
Hi, Carver! Can I call you Carver? I see that you are taking pills. Isn’t it a small world? I am taking pills too! I’ve been taking pills and drunk dialing people ever since my ex left me! I am so very, very lonely, especially since that thing with Mark Solano didn’t work out.

EMMETT CARVER:
Uh… are you flirting with me?

GEMMA FISHER:
I just wanted you to know that I really am a decent person. And so very, very lonely.

EMMETT CARVER:
And you are telling me this because…?

GEMMA FISHER:
I just realized that you look a little like David Tennant. Shave that beard off, smile every once in a while, chuck that dodgy American accent… You could be quite attractive. Hmmm…

EMMETT CARVER:
Hmmm…

Carver’s phone rings.

EMMETT CARVER:
Hello? Oh, crap, I’ll be right there.

GEMMA FISHER:
What just happened?

EMMETT CARVER:
Look out the window. Somebody has set Mark Solano’s boat on fire. One of our suspects is getting nervous. This is about to get much more interesting.

  • Two episodes longer than Broadchurch? That’s interesting. They will have come up with a few new tricks. Was the boat fire part of the original show? (PS: that “probably your table manners” thing cracked me up.)

The boat fire was always part of the story. Some of what we saw last Thursday was new – the backpacker was not as big a deal.
