FADE IN:

INT. POLICE INTERROGATION ROOM

Det. Ellie Miller is questioning prime suspect Vince Novik.

ELLIE MILLER:
OK, scumbag, here’s the deal. My boss Emmett has to solve this case TODAY because we are on the very last episode and the chief has to fire him now. The writer promised us that we’d have a different killer than Broadchurch did, so it’s got to be you. Confess!

VINCE NOVIK:
I’m not talking until somebody checks on my mom and makes sure she got her meds.

ELLIE MILLER:
Great, so I guess we have to spend this last episode finding somebody who can take care of your poor, senile old mom.

VINCE NOVIK:
No, I’m going home. I didn’t do it. I think you’ll spend this last episode figuring out who did.

Det. Emmett Carver bursts through the door.

EMMETT CARVER:
Interrogation terminated. Vince, you are free to go.

ELLIE MILLER:
WHAT?

VINCE NOVIK:
Told ya. Bye.
(flies out the door)

ELLIE MILLER:
Sir, we don’t have time for this! We only have forty-five minutes with commercials to book this scumbag!

EMMETT CARVER:
Never mind, Miller. He really didn’t do it. I need to ask you a few questions.

ELLIE MILLER:
No! You aren’t going to do this! We get a different ending this time! They promised!

EMMETT CARVER:
Apparently, they lied so that people would turn in to see us solve the “mystery.” Turns out, it was your husband Joe again. Just like in England. He confessed out of sheer guilt and production deadlines.
(beat)
Huh, I guess actual police work really is overrated in this town.

ELLIE MILLER:
(throws up in the handy trashcan)
No! No! NO! Joe was supposed to be a good guy this time!

EMMETT CARVER:
I know, I know.

ELLIE MILLER:
Please tell me he wasn’t a sick pedophile who was groping Danny in secret! Again!

EMMETT CARVER:
You said it. I didn’t. But yeah. That happened.

ELLIE MILLER:
How could they lie to us like this?

EMMETT CARVER:
I feel your pain. They told me that starring in the American remake was a good career decision that would make me a huge star in the States. They lied about that, too.

ELLIE MILLER:
I’m gonna kill him!

EMMETT CARVER:
Well, that might be a little different, at least.

Ellie runs out the door towards Joe’s jail cell.

EMMETT CARVER:
(dully)
Wait. Stop. Don’t.
(beat)
There. I did my job.

Ellie slams the door of Joe’s cell and begins beating the ever-living crap out of him.

ELLIE MILLER:
He was twelve years old!
(right cross to the head)

JOE MILLER:
I didn’t mean to hurt him – OW!

ELLIE MILLER:
You tried to molest a kid!
(punches him in the stomach)

JOE MILLER:
But I didn’t! He ran away from me and tripped! Argh!

ELLIE MILLER:
It wasn’t supposed to be you this time!
(kicks him in the groin)

JOE MILLER:
He hit his head on a really conveniently placed rock! Oof!

ELLIE MILLER:
How. Could. You. Give. Us. This. Lame. Ending?????!!!
(uppercut to the chin)

JOE MILLER:
I’m a good man, Ellie! HELP!!!!!!!

Det. Carver wanders in tiredly.

EMMETT CARVER:
OK, Miller, you have to stop now. We have to let Mark Solano scream at him, too. Oh, and we’ve booked you and the boys a hotel room on the outskirts of town. You might want to make yourself scarce. Beth Solano’s got an evil stare and a crushing rebuke with your name on it.

ELLIE MILLER:
What are you going to do?

EMMETT CARVER:
Oh, this is turning out great for me. I get to leave this town forever now! I cracked the case, so I’m the big hero and I retire with my professional reputation restored. I’m going to attend my daughter’s graduation, have heart surgery, and live happily ever after someplace else.

ELLIE MILLER:
I thought you had to go back to hell?

EMMETT CARVER:
No, I think you may be going there instead. Hell on earth, and you don’t even have to die to get there.

ELLIE MILLER:
Well, at least you aren’t the worst cop in California anymore.

EMMETT CARVER:
No, it looks like you are. Of course, I’ve been saying that since day one. Bye, now.

Carver exits. Det. Miller sobs with her head in her hands and her son Tom enters.

TOM MILLER:
Why are you crying, Mom?

ELLIE MILLER:
Because your daddy killed Danny Solano.

TOM MILLER:
No, he didn’t, Mom. The writers didn’t lie… exactly.

ELLIE MILLER:
Tom! Was there another killer? What do you know?

TOM MILLER:
Well, when Dad snuck out in the middle of the night to meet a little kid, I thought that was really weird and creepy and scary, so I followed him.

ELLIE MILLER:
And you saw…

TOM MILLER:
Well, I saw Dad make a pass at Danny, and then I saw Danny run… and…

ELLIE MILLER:
And?

TOM MILLER:
I hit Danny over the head with a boat oar.

ELLIE MILLER:
WHAT?????!!!!

TOM MILLER:
It was an accident! I was aiming for Dad! I’m a little kid, and that thing’s fucking heavy.

GRACEPOINT FINALE RECAP: Graceless and Pointless Ending (S1:E10)

Momma… I just killed a boy… Put my oar against his head…

ELLIE MILLER:
That’s completely understandable, Tom.

TOM MILLER:
So, am I in trouble now?

ELLIE MILLER:
No, I think I’ll let your Dad rot in jail forever. Fucking pervert.

Rev. Paul Coates pokes his nose in.

PAUL COATES:
Just to let you know, I’m going to be presiding over Danny’s funeral, and later we’ll have huge bonfires up and down the coast so that I can show everybody what a big torch I’m still holding for Beth Solano. You all are invited… Actually, under the circumstances, I guess you probably shouldn’t go. Some folks kind of want to tear you limb from limb. I’ll preach forgiveness. Maybe that will help.

Paul exits. Ellie’s phone rings.

ELLIE MILLER:
(checking caller ID)
It’s Carver. He’s figured it out what really happened. I think I just… won’t answer that phone.

TOM MILLER:
So we are ending this on a cliffhanger?

ELLIE MILLER:
(phone still ringing)
Yeah.

TOM MILLER:
But, Mom, the ratings sucked! There won’t be a Season Two! This story is left unfinished!

ELLIE MILLER:
That doesn’t matter, Tom. Nobody’s watching anyway.

And then David Tennett wakes up to discover the entire season was just a dream of his Broadchurch character.

  • I didn’t see the remake, but I’m wondering how different this is. In the original I had a feeling the son did it — that it might have happened as described and they decided not to tell us or to save it for a sequel or another season.
