VIDEO: Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (1971)

We’re sorry...

This video is no longer available due to the shutdown of Blip.tv.

Taking a break from Crystal Lake, the Fear Fan takes a minute to contemplate one of the stranger entries in one of his other favorite series, also known as Godzilla vs. Hedorah. An undeniably odd entry in an era known for its strangeness, is Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster as weird as its reputation suggests? Yes. God, yes.

I almost choked from laughing at the Kill Bill references. Who did the voice over for the fan mail?

    • fearfanforever

Glad you liked it, dude! That voice belongs to my wonderful and long-suffering girlfriend, Ashley. 🙂

MOS reference= broken record. I could defend it until the day I died, but it wouldn’t get me anywhere. However, I understand why some people hated it. Other than that, I liked your review.

MOS reference? Sorry, but I’m not quite getting what that is… For me, that abbreviation refers to scenes in films that are shot without sound. Glad you liked the review, though!

        Man of Steel.

SUPERMAN DID NOT DESTROY METROPOLIS! ZOD DID IT ALL! SUPERMAN EVEN TRIED TO TAKE THE FIGHT AWAY AND ZOD KNOCKED HIM BACK DOWN! SUPERMAN DID EVERYTHING HE COULD!

        ….

Is what he was trying to say, I believe.

        Yes, I agree with him.

Oh!!! I actually really liked Man of Steel. In fact, I feel it’s probably one of the best filmic adaptations of the character to date. Still, the joke occurred to me so I thought I’d throw it in. 🙂

            Well you shouldn’t have.

Shame on you bashing a movie you actually like.

          • fearfanforever

Hate to tell ya, but if I didn’t poke fun at the things I like, the show wouldn’t exist. 🙂

          • Wizkamridr

The joke fit in perfectly. I just took it the wrong way. Does the kid mention superman in the japanese version? I’d figure he would say ultraman.

          • fearfanforever

Not sure, but I might check…. Seems like a reasonable assumption though. 🙂

I’ve only ever seen the Godzilla that came out this year and really liked it. Never cared about the films before, but this review makes me see there is a rich (and Velveeta-cheesy) history to the icon that just might be worth exploring. Your conversion powers are strong.

Thanks! That’s the great thing about Godzilla, he’s been re-invented so many times that there’s something for all tastes! If you’re looking for something closer to the new Godzilla film, the 1980’s ‘Heisei’ series is probably up your alley. It has a more serious tone, and some of the best ‘human’ plot lines of the franchise.

I’m not a horror-film-fan – but your Godzilla-Reviews are quite cool. My first Godzi-Movie was “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla”, too.
Maaaaaybe you could do an in-depth review of Pacific Rim and Godzilla 2014?

    • fearfanforever

Well, I’d love to, but I’ve got a lot of stuff planned coming up so it may be a while. I DO however have Fright Bites episodes for each to tide you over!

      • CaptainCalvinCat

Oh, I watched the “Fright Bites” and they were great, I just hoped, that you’d do something more in depth and in detail. ^^ But since there are lots of godzilla films out there, I’m sure, there will be other Godzilla-Reviews coming, eh?

That clip of the English version of “Save the Earth”; that was my YouTube video. I am honored!

And thank you VERY much for posting it! That gag wouldn’t have been the same without that bit, and it’s always a pleasure to see another G-fan doing their best to keep the legacy alive!
