the agony booth forum rules

Breaking of these rules will usually result in a warning. If you get more than a few warnings, you will be banned. There is no magic number of warnings that will lead to a ban. It depends on the severity of the infractions and the attitude of the forum member.

An especially severe infraction can lead to immediate banning, without warning.

Please keep in mind that the Agony Booth is not a free public service. We reserve the right to ban anyone at any time for any reason.

The current forum moderators are: Albert, Alshain, krylonman, Sapphire, Speedy Delivery Chick.

What you CAN do: (that other forums might not allow)

You can use profanity There's no rule against including four-letter words and other types of swearing in your posts. All we ask is that you show a little tact and:
  1. Don't include swearing in your topic titles. If you want to include curse words, try to censor them with asterisks (F**k Michael Bay!)
  2. Don't go overboard with the swearing. If you use the word "c***sucker" five times in one post, you've probably taken things a little too far.
You can post links to non-family friendly material It's okay to post links to other sites that contain nudity, mature language, and other content that's not for the whole family. But please clearly label the links as being for adults only. "Not Safe for Work", "NSFW", or "Adults Only" are all pretty good indicators that little Timmy shouldn't click on the link (or big Timmy, if he happens to be browsing from work). But please, please keep the adult-oriented material within reason. Links to especially graphic content will be deleted.
You can talk about controversial subjects It's okay to discuss subjects like these:
  • Gun control
  • Racism
  • Media bias
  • "X is the worst president of all time"
  • "Why I do/don't believe in God"

However:
  1. Don't drag other, existing threads off-topic to talk about these controversial subjects. If you want to talk about these subjects, start a new thread.
  2. Don't insult anyone personally in these threads. Attack the opinion, not the person posting the opinion.
You can reply multiple times in a single thread Usually, replying to the same thread multiple times in a short period of time is discouraged. However, it's okay when you're directly replying to multiple posts in the thread.

This simply means there's no need to spend hours editing the Forum Code to include quotes from several different posts in one reply. It's okay to reply once for each post you're replying to.

However, if you're not replying to a specific post, please try to only post once in a thread within a reasonable amount of time.
You can resurrect old topics Topics that haven't had any replies within 60 days are automatically archived. So it's okay to reply to a thread within that 60-day time frame. However:
  1. Don't reply to a topic specifically to "save" it from auto-archiving
  2. Don't reply simply with "(bump)" or post a reply just to bring the topic back up to the top of the list, without adding anything of actual value to the thread
  3. Try not to reply to threads that are better left forgotten (ex: threads that almost deteriorated into flamewars)
You can talk about the forum itself Talking about the Agony Booth forum itself is okay. Just make sure to keep these topics in the Everything Else forum area, and don't post them in other areas where they're off-topic.

Please note that the forum is not run by consensus. In general, moderator actions are not up for debate. In particular, do not post threads with titles like "Why was my thread closed?" or "Why was Forum User X banned?" These will be locked immediately.
You can suggest changes to the rules If there's something about these rules you don't like, or if you think there's something we overlooked, feel free to let us know! You can contact any moderator through the email links on their profiles.
Please have fun! Last but not least, the Agony Booth is a site about having fun. We're primarily here to make fun of bad movies, laugh at celebrities, and have the occasional lively debate. If you're not having fun when you post here, you might be posting for the wrong reasons. So above all, make sure to enjoy yourself when you post in these forums.

What you CAN NOT do:

Do not abuse the English language This is an English language forum. Please respect the rules of punctuation, grammar, and spelling. We don't expect everybody to write like English professors, but putting periods at the ends of sentences, and capitalizing the first word of each sentence, and inserting a paragraph break every once in a while will go a long way in helping people understand what you're saying.
Do not troll You are not allowed to post for the sole purpose of angering other forum members, or baiting them into arguments.
Do not feed the trolls Never respond to anyone who is blatantly breaking the forum rules.

Replying to someone who's flaming, trolling, spamming, etc, will only drag threads further off-topic, or lead to flamewars, or bring more unwanted attention to spam posts. If you see someone breaking the rules, please contact a forum moderator through the email links in their profiles.

If you're flamed, don't flame back. "He/She started it" will not be considered a good excuse for breaking for forum rules.
Do not flame You are not allowed to personally insult or attack anyone. You can attack a forum member's opinions, but you cannot attack the forum member.

Indirect flaming ("All people who like X are morons") is also not allowed.
Do not directly include pornographic, violent, or graphic images in your post You are not allowed to include images in your post that other people might find offensive, or inappropriate to the place where they're browsing (the office, the library, the classroom, etc.).

You're allowed to post links to this type of content, but you must clearly label the links as being for adults only.
Do not upload pornographic avatars The same rule above applies for forum avatars. Do not use an image for your avatar that other people might find offensive or inappropriate.
Do not post commercial spam You are not allowed to post for the sole purpose of earning money, selling something, or promoting a product.

Forum members who post commercial spam will be banned immediately, with no warnings.
Do not post non-commercial spam Do not post the same thing multiple times in the forum. Do not post the same thing repeatedly in a thread. Do not constantly reply with posts that have no relevance to the topic being discussed.
Do not abuse your signature line Your signature should not be ten times longer than your average post. If you repeatedly post replies that are two words long, while your signature line is twenty lines long, you can expect a warning.

If you really want to have a longer signature, look into using the [font size=1] tag.
Do not be a Post Whore
  • Do not post constantly and obsessively. An example of obsessive posting would be posting on this forum 10 to 20 times a day, 7 days a week. If you post obsessively like this, your forum account may be locked without warning.
  • Do not post simply to say you have no opinion/knowledge of the topic.
  • Don't post a lot of new topics all at once.
  • If you find yourself replying to every single active thread, or a large majority, you might be monopolizing the discussion. Take a break and let other people get in a word or two.
Do not reveal spoilers Do not disclose major plot developments of a film or TV series in a topic title. Particularly, never divulge the death of a character in the topic title.

If you think your topic will contain mostly spoilers, add the word SPOILERS to your topic title.

For replies within a topic, please put the [spoiler] tag around anything that might be considered a significant plot twist, or an unexpected development in the story.

We realize that spoilers are subjective and change over time. As of 2007, "Darth Vader is Luke's father" is not a spoiler. But as of 2007, the endings to films like The Sixth Sense and The Usual Suspects are still in questionable territory. Please use your judgment wisely.
Do not include multiple, large, high-resolution images in one post Some of our forum users are still on dialup, or other slow connections. Please do not directly include multiple images in your post that are large or high-resolution. If you must include these images, only include one per post. We prefer that you link to these images instead.
Do not quote huge posts for no reason If you're replying to someone else's lengthy post, and only commenting on one thing that person said, there's no need to quote the entire post in your reply, especially if your reply is one sentence long. Please trim the quote section down to the specific point you're replying to.
Do not reply without reading the whole thread You must read the entire thread you're replying to. Yes, the whole thread. This is a discussion forum, not a place for you to read your own words and your words alone. If you can't take the time to read what other people have posted, why should anyone take the time to read what you've posted?
Do not drag threads off-topic If you want to talk about something other than what the original poster wants to discuss, you're free to start a new thread about that.
Do not start open-ended threads that can go on until the end of time Nobody is interested in discussing the same topic for the next year and a half. Do not start threads titled "New DVD Releases" or "Commercials You Hate". There will always be new DVD releases. There will always be new commercials to hate. Instead, start topics about specific commercials and DVDs.

Questions or comments about these rules can be directed to any of your forum moderators: Albert, Alshain, krylonman, Sapphire, Speedy Delivery Chick.
