From "The Road to Wellville": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VqdZfUp3hEIf I were you I'd ignore the crappy video quality and the poor timing of the subtitles. Just listen to Broderick's voice as he goes from a terrible uppercrust accent to his regular voice.

Not too surprising there. You can hear it with a ton of actors in movies. Listen to the Lethal Weapon movies, in at least one scene per movie Mel Gibson starts talking like an aussie. Especially Lethal Weapon 2 'I have one more question, stupid octopus'

It's the Dick Van Dyke Effect. "Sam, Ziggy says there's a 97% chance you're here to avenge the death of Vesper Lynd."
Field of Dreams is not a sequel to The Catcher in the Rye.

Especially Lethal Weapon 2 Well actually it is a little surprising because Matthew is not a stranger to accents: he also had a southern accent in Glory. And while you can hear him breaking it a little in Glory he seems to at least be trying to main the accent. Here he's not even trying. He just lets it go.

I'm way more intrigued that somebody watched the Road to Wellville enough to pinpoint when an actor lost his(slight) fake accent for 12 seconds, posts said scene on web, and then labels said scene "The worst of Matthew Broderick part 1." I mean that's absolutely fucking fascinating. Because I am God and good and bad are what I say: http://thegoonisdumb.blogspot.com/

I mean that's absolutely fucking fascinating. I think it's all explained in the summary for the video. Also what do you mean about his accent being slightly fake? That accent sounds like something you'd hear in a Middle School Drama Club production not a feature film.

I'm not sure what this person's complaining about. I listened to it twice, and Broderick sounds the same throughout. If this is such a problem, it should be easy to compile several examples from the movie of his accent slipping. Also, I don't understand what's supposed to be so wrong with his accent. It sounds like what it's supposed to sound like, an affluent, well-spoken 19th-Century American. Was he supposed to sound like Thurston Howell III? Quote:he also had a southern accent in Glory. Actually, in that movie, he was speaking in a New England accent. His character was from Boston. Looking good, you handsome motherf@#$%r.

Actually, in that movie, he was speaking in a New England accent. His character was from Boston. No I can definately hear a change...listen to the 2nd line again: it starts off with the same accent but then around the time he says "toast" he starts to sound like himself again. Also in this scene he doesn't have the accent at all which leads me to believe he only used that accent for one line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8jnIJAJujo

The best accent I've heard from an actor (as in, an actor putting on an accent different than what he's used to) is the guy who plays the new assistant DA on Law & Order. The guy has an extremely convincing New York accent, yet here is his normal voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf1MjeIgEQk
Adam Schiff: This started with a murder, ends with an execution. You got what you wanted - take the rest of the week off! Jack McCoy: It's Friday, Adam. Adam: So it is. See you Monday.

Jude Law does an excellent American accent in The Talented Mr. Ripley, but there`s a scene where his character shouts "Leave it!" and loses the accent. Is it hard for actors to hold on to accents while shouting?

As far as accents go, Hugh Laurie and Simon Baker are amazing at American accents, especially Hugh Laurie. I can't remember the episode of House where he does an American doing a bad British accent, but it's pretty amazing when you know what he really sounds like. See also, Stuart Little. I thought he was putting on an accent in the live-action 101 Dalmatians. I've never heard Simon Baker drop his accent on The Mentalist, either. I think it's just a talent that some actors have. A lot of people suck at it, but the good ones tend to be very good. HTFU - Permaband Hardcore Nerds in da House Oh snap! I guess since Titanic there's been nothing at all in popular culture whatsoever that's appealed to teenage girls, their emotions, their views on romance, or anything. Until Twilight we lived in an enlightened time where many teen girls didn't loose their minds and go crazy over shallow entertainment. - Thegoon

I think Christian Bale is pretty good with American accents. He has a big shouting scene in American Psycho and never loses it, though there is a moment where there seems to be a hint of struggle to maintain it. Though he does lose some points for having a bad growling Batman voice. I almost think they should of dubbed in Kevin Conroy lol 'I have one more question, stupid octopus'

Quote:I think it's all explained in the summary for the video. Not really. I mean it states that it's going to be the "worst of Matthew Broderick" but all I say is a really low-quality 12 second clip which needs subtitles to point out when he fucks up. It just makes whoever posted it come off as extremely anal-retentive, and weird. Quote:Also what do you mean about his accent being slightly fake? That accent sounds like something you'd hear in a Middle School Drama Club production not a feature film. To be absolutely honest? I've never seen the Road to Wellville, so maybe he's just firing up the goofiest upper-class accent possible(which in another post you say he might not have been doing) so all I have is the aformentioned "really low-quality 12 second clip which needs subtitles to point out when he fucks up." Hugh Laurie has such a great American accent that the one time I caught him saying "in hospital" I pointed and said "AHA!!!" My roommate laughed. All the Pythons... all of them... can't do American accents to save their lives. Watch "The Meaning of Life" and see for yourself. John Cleese's strange faux-Durante in the restaurant scene, Graham Chapman's "next on the uh-gender, the meaning of uh-llllife", and Michael Palin's "halloh thar!" in the Death at the Dinner Party scene... reverse Dick Van Dyke if ever I heard it. Now that you mention it, the pythons DID have a lot of problems talking with American accents in Meaning of Life. The boardroom scene was almost painful to a point. It may be for comedic effect but i never have heard any of them be able to speak like an American. Terry Gilliam should of voice coached them. 'I have one more question, stupid octopus'

Here's the whole scene, painful accents and all, for your viewing pleasure: What's amazing about the scene is that Terry Jones, the Python who can usually adapt the best to accents, still sounds really British with his two lines (and I doubt that was intentional), whereas Eric Idle, who has probably the thickest accent out of all the Pythons (seriously, I've never heard him without it; it's like his own personal albatross), has the least difficulties in sounding like an American... although, it's still pretty bad when everyone else in the scene sounds like they're talking out of their noses.

Given that most foreign accents were done in over-the-top/intentionally bad ways by the Pythons in the TV series and so on (vis: The French Taunter from Holy Grail), it seems likely that they were doing the American accents badly on purpose here as well.
