It’s too bad that a fan video of the first movie had to be taken down from You-Tube; in it, the movie was portrayed as a role-playing game. Some of it made sense that way.

I haven’t seen this movie, but from your footage and the other comments on the net, it was an vast improvement over the first. THIS TIME they got the spirit of the game right: the PARTY. Everybody had something to contribute and there wasn’t a “chosen one”.
It’s been my opinion for several years (Way back when I was still role-playing) a movie company should run a short role-playing game with some actors and actresses, record the game and make a script out of it. At the very least, it would be an interesting experiment.

I think the reason studios are hesitant to throw money at D&D films is because they’re worried about backlash from the fans. Yes, they could try to adapt one of the novels, but would that be a D&D movie, or an adaptation of the book? They can’t adapt one of the video games, because a) the best ones have stories that change depending on the player’s actions, and b) no one really cared for the novelizations of those games. So instead, the studios decide to do their own thing, and the fans complain about that.

Also, I saw the third D&D movie on Syfy a while back. It was… not good. It had a budget comparable to this one, but not the spirit to make up for it. They bring back the “chosen one” plot device from the first film, and the party consists mostly of Stupid Evil characters. They do name-drop the Book of Vile Darkness, but I can’t for the life of me remember if it was actually important or not.
