VIDEO: DOA: Dead or Alive (2006)

We’re sorry...

This video is no longer available due to the shutdown of Blip.tv.

DOA: Dead or Alive (based on the video game of the same name) is a film with a risky concept: Gather four hot women (Holly Valance, Devon Aoki, Sarah Carter, Jaime Pressly), put them in as little clothes as possible, and have them fight each other! Luckily for Cecil, the concept works, making for one of the best video game adaptations ever. Prepare yourself for fantastic fight choreography (from the legendary Corey Yuen), wire-fu-a-plenty, Eric Roberts in sunglasses, the kid from Revenge of the Ninja all grown up, and did we mention hot women fighting?

I’m a straight girl who never played any of the video games and I love this movie. Good cheesy action but with great fights.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

Take all the fights and the volleyball and that is the games.

I loved the fights and the whole campy nature of the film. Pure entertainment.

  • Devon Aoki (the girl/thing from another planet) who plays Kasumi (a strawberry blonde character in the games) looks like she’s got a syndrome of some sort. Seriously. Maybe Kristen Schall would’ve been better for the role…

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

She’s an oddity. She looks like a combination of a human and a grey alien but for some reason I find her very attractive.

      • MephLord

I also think she’s quite attractive.  I also like her in War, a movie that ultimately felt she was the only one even trying to be interesting in.

        • Cecil_Trachenburg

Haven’t seen War but she was really, really hot in 2Fast2Furious. Her outfits were the best. She was also great in a little movie called DEBS that I frikkin love.

          • Jill Bearup

This movie just looks ridiculously entertaining. But I have a bit of a soft spot for asskicking women. (Also I geuinely cackled at your line about Kasumi’s gynaecologist, so thank you for that.

          • Cecil_Trachenburg

            Thanks! 🙂

This is one of those rare movies that while yes, it does put the women in bikinis, they are doing it because they know they look good and can kick the ass of anyone who messes with them. I think this is a much better female empowerment movie than all those “woe is me I need a man” movies hollywood loves to pump out.

So Close and The House of Fury are two cool martial arts flicks where the ladies dole out the beatings.

I love So Close!  I wish I would’ve bought it on DVD when it was cheap before the local DVD rental store went out of business…Shu Qi is amazing 😀

          • Cecil_Trachenburg

A great martial arts flick. Another to check is Naked Weapon. It is a little uncomfortable in the beginning (young girls are kidnapped and trained to be assassins) but the action scenes afterwards are all kinds of awesome. Plus, Maggie Q.

          • Russell Brin (Facebook sux)

Have you thought or reviewing House of Flying Daggers?  That’s a movie that seems to have been forgotten in Zhang Ziyi’s bibliography, yet remains a fairly solid movie even if the plot gets a bit weird in parts (and on the DVD commentary they even mentioned that Ziyi always seems to end up showering, that could be a good comparative comment to see if it’s really true)

  • edharris1178

Good stuff, Cecil.   Sounds like a cheesy blast.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

       Thanks! 🙂

This movie is a helluva guilty pleasure and  I wonder if the producers have the rights to do a spin-off Ninja Gaiden movie with Kane Kosugi.  Especially cool considering his father was basically king of the Ninja movie craze in the 80’s.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

I would love for them to do a spinoff with Kane. The kid is amazing, I was hoping when Ninja Assassin was a hit that he would at least get his own movie but no such luck. If he was this age in the 80s he would be an action legend like his dad.

      • MephLord

You know the role I’d like to see Kane Kosugi play?  Quick Kick in a GI Joe movie.  I’d also like to see Tomax and Xamot and Executive Enterprises in a third movie as the primary antagonists as well.  Having a GI Joe movie be more espionage would be good to get away from how outlandish some of the material can be at times.

        • Cecil_Trachenburg

Kane would be great as Quick Kick, although with the movie series seemingly going in a more serious direction, I’m not sure if the character would fit. (at least with that code name) I’d be all for him as Zartan.

Tomax and Xamot would be great. There is a large part of me that wants the third movie to have Serpentor.

  • Olaf_the_Lofty

I think “tit-fu” is my favourite martial art. Does it include the discipline demonstrated by Natasha Henstridge in “Species” where she shoots her nipples out to impale people?

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

I should make a chart lol. Henstridge was using a modified version of tit-fu. heh

  • ZiloTheStrange

Finally! Someone heard my months-long mental pleading to cover this movie! You’re my new hero. I’m a straight girl, and I love those games, and I love and own this movie. I know the whole franchise is terribly cheesy, but I’m a sucker for good fight scenes. Also it had Kane Kosugi in it, who I became familiar with through the Ninja Warrior competition, and Devon Aoki, who I loved in WAR.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

      Thanks 🙂

The fight scenes are some of the best out there, I still can’t believe fans of the game and gamers in general disliked the movie. Kane was in Ninja Warrior? I didn’t know that!

      • ZiloTheStrange

Yeah! It was the earlier seasons, though, but him and his brother, Shane, competed quite a few times.

        • Cecil_Trachenburg

If they competed a few times I guess the never made it, showing how brutal those things really are.

I only saw a few episodes here and there.

  • Kev

So in other words, you’re trying to tell us that the director….

    *puts on sunglasses*

Has a Yuen for fight scenes.

    YEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

      hahahahahahaha

Caruso CSI endless one liners, always funny. 🙂

  • Nuclearademan

I wonder why they didn’t just get Hulk Hogan rather than making Kevin Nash look like Hulk Hogan?

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

Around the time they were filming this Hogan Knows Best was on the air and pretty popular. Most likely he wanted too much money.

      • MephLord

I really dislike Hulk Hogan, him and Flair are just awful now.  The sad thing is, of any wrestler to put in the role with any name recognition, Kevin Nash was probably the best choice.  Stone Cold wouldn’t job like that, Bill Goldberg has zero acting skill and the Ultimate Warrior is just too crazy.

        • Cecil_Trachenburg

I don’t have a problem with Hogan, I think he is just a victim of agreeing to an awful reality show. My favorite wrestler will always be the Iron Sheik. I met him a few years ago and it was so sad. He was really tired and just looked old and exhaused. Time sucks.

Stone Cold was quite good in The Condemned. Outside of the Rock I think he will do well in acting. Oh, he was good in the Expendables too!

          • MephLord

Sheiky Baby is hilarious.  He’ll forever be known for his comment about B Brian Blair “I will put him in the camel clutch, break his back, fuck his ass and make him humble” I haven’t laughed that long and hard in a long time.  It is sad then if looked old and tired.  I saw Bret Hart here this year and he looked old and haggard as well, he had the face of a 70 year old.  I liked Stone Cold in Damage, that was a pretty good action flick.

  • Another good review, Cecil! first, your commentary is funny, well-timed, and sharp. It actually reminds me a bit of the humour style used in “Bob’s Burgers”. second, i really like the movie facts you give afterwards. You seem to provide info on everything: production, locations, musical score, directors, actors, stunts, controversies, etc. For movies that I’ve seen before, I appreciate the research you do for these reviews.

Speaking of controversies… is there any ACTUAL female nudity in this (or is it one big tease like that new Jennifer Love Hewitt series, “the client list”)? Weirder still, if there is no female nudity, why was there brief male frontal nudity in a DOA movie? (ugh… check out the scene where the guy jumps from the bathtub.)

    Thanks.

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

      Thanks 🙂

I haven’t seen Bob’s Burgers but I’ll check them out on Netflix. I’m glad you like the extras, that was something I wanted to make sure I put in every video. Now some I have more info on than others but I wanted to make sure each video got at least something added.

Nope, no female nudity. JLA is one of those actresses that should have taken her gear off already. The Zack nudity is blacked out so you can’t really see anything. (thankfully lol)

Y’know, making a video game movie, especially off a fighting game, isn’t rocket science, but somehow Hollywood usually just doesn’t get it.  They usually throw out the basic story the game has, in favor of some weird, convoluted crap where they have to scramble to involve half the characters, and MIGHT get some elements of the game in.  (Worst example of course being STREET FIGHTER.)  In DOA, I get the feeling those involved actually SAW THE GAMES BEING PLAYED!  And yes, it’s derivative of ENTER THE DRAGON–  But so is every fighting game ever made! 😉

    • Cecil_Trachenburg

The folks involved in DOA got it. They took the basic elements of the games and translated them to film. They also got a director who understands how to make a great fight sequence, which was great considering how essential the fights were to the movie. They didn’t add some wacky backstory or add a bunch of new characters. They also got actresses and actors that were right for their parts! In Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li they couldn’t even get that right!

Exactly. Every fighting game is pretty much Enter the Dragon.
