VIDEO: Clonus vs. The Island

We’re sorry...

This video is no longer available due to the shutdown of Blip.tv.

Cecil begins a new series called “Vs.”, where he’ll take two movies that have a major similarity, and talk about what they have in common and what they do differently. This episode goes into the legal battle between the makers of Parts: The Clonus Horror and The Island, and breaks down some of the major similarities between the films.

I was pretty annoyed when I found out that The Island was plagiarized, because I actually really liked it! I still really like it, to be honest, but I’m glad the court made Dreamworks pay up.

I liked it to but it does sting that it was wholesale ripped off. Well, at least for once they didn’t get away with it.

    enjoyable and enlightening as always
Like most of MST3K the better movies for them to work on were always the better movies. Clonus is a decent concept and it’s well paced with acting that never goes truly awry. It is when the movies are padded out with long periods of nothing that they get unbearable.

Thanks! One of the times where a film is so padded but still makes for a great MST3K episode is Manos.

So what will we see next in the Vs. series? Yojimbo Vs. A Fistful of Dollars, City on Fire Vs. Reservoir Dogs? I’m looking forward to the next episode.

Actually Yojimbo, A Fistful of Dollars, and Last Man Standing are all semi-based on Red Harvest by Dashiel Hammitt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Harvest

Which is kind of like saying Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu isn’t based upon F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu but Dracula by Bram Stoker.

Sergio Leone copied shots from Yojimbo so much so that Akira Kurosawa successfully sued him.

City on Fire vs Reservoir Dogs is on the list. As is The Exorcist The Beginning vs Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, Darkness Falls vs The Tooth Fairy, When a Stranger Calls vs Don’t Answer the Phone, Funny Games vs Funny Games, and Casablanca vs Barb Wire.
