VIDEO: Captain America (1990)

It’s the start of a brand new series, The Movie Skewer! In each episode, a different Agony Booth host will venture outside his/her comfort zone, and roast one of the worst movies of all time!

In this episode, Fear Fan leaves behind the world of horror movies to examine the awful 1990 direct-to-video Albert Pyun-directed Captain America, starring Ronny Cox, Ned Beatty, and J.D. Salinger’s son as Cap. Our own Stan Ferguson previously covered the 1979 Reb Brown version, but this one is much worse, despite being a lot more faithful to the comics.

The Cinema Snob kinda sounds like Matt Pinfield with less gravel, especially near the beginning. He also kinda looks like Louis C.K., throughout.

      D’oh!
This comment has nothing to do with the Captain America video, but such is the way when you use one window to catch up on multiple, unrelated videos. This was a reference to the ‘Leprechaun 6’ video.

  • From Wikipedia:
The Human Torch, also known as Jim Hammond, is a fictional character, a Marvel Comics-owned superhero. Created by writer-artist Carl Burgos, he first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 (Oct.1939), published by Marvel’s predecessor, Timely Comics.

    • Fantasy Mission Force

This is addressed in the video itself, actually, just later on, near the very end.

      • OldDog99

Given that the movie referred in the same scene to both the Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch, who along with Captain America were the founding members of the WWII team known as the Invaders…I’m pretty sure the producers of the movie were quite aware of the original Human Torch and included that reference intentionally, and correctly.

        • I think you’re right and it’s sad that they did enough research to include a throwaway reference to a now obscure superhero from the 40s, but at the same time failed to grasp the motivations or personality of the main character

        • fearfanforever

I’m not too knowledgeable about the Invaders, so I didn’t catch that. Good eye!
Anyway, there is another point to be made, and that is that most of the audience probably would think they were talking about the FF Human Torch.
Anyway, if it was a nod to the original HT, that’s cool, but it still fails as a reference due to the confusion it probably caused in non-comics fans.

          • groupthinker1984

Maybe but if its a mistake, its a mistake that the 2011 version (was it 2011?) makes as well. The Human Torch robot can be seen on display during the World’s Fair scene. Although admittedly that’s probably a less confusing way to reference that version of the character but this Cap was also the last person to actually play any version of the Human Torch on screen, its a wash? Maybe?

What a shite movie, I hope CA TFA is going to be better

  • Please, no more videos. I will seriously stop dropping by the site if there aren’t some actual articles on here occasionally.

    • Michael A. Novelli

Um, I just posted a very lengthy interview less than a week ago…

      • Hellraiser

Please, no more videos. I will seriously stop dropping by the site if there aren’t some actual articles on here occasionally.

      • Hellraiser

Scratch that. If you MUST have videos then only have Stan’s ones, they’re the only fucking good videos on site right now.

  • Can’t wait to see if there’s a Psych-Hitler joke in the video.

  • Fantasy Mission Force

The one thing I do hope is that Tom Davidson never stops coming to the Agony Booth. I sure know I would lose all of the enjoyment I get from this site if Tom Davidson didn’t, on occasion, drop by and read an article or two in his spare time. I might even stop coming here myself if ‘ole Tom Davidson stops; after all, what would be the point? My stars, you people need to be doing SO MUCH MORE to keep Tom Davidson around. Don’t you undestand: You NEED him. I NEED him. WE ALL need him!

    • Michael A. Novelli

Are we still going on about him?

      • Fantasy Mission Force

I’m sure people will be ‘going on’ about Tom Davidson 2000+ years after he shuffles off this mortal coil. We are all but marble statues to the god that is he.

  • Cristiona

I know it’s supposed to be angry, and this was a terrible movie, but I preferred your less hostile reviews. Otherwise, a pair fair summation of this train wreck.

    • fearfanforever

Glad you liked it! It was kind of cool to do something that wasn’t horror.

  • cyberjohn

I actually like the video reviews here, maybe there could be more written recaps but otherwise I don’t mind

  • John Lewis

Put me down as someone who dislikes the video trend on the site–because they take so flipping long to load. Give me a written recap any time and I’m happy.

    • Michael A. Novelli

Really? They load just fine for me…

      • Hellraiser

Yeah, they take so long to load and they have like 5 minutes of ads before hand. So fucking annoying.

        • Michael A. Novelli

Hey, I’m bugged by the ads, too, but they keep the lights on around here…

      • Thomas Stockel

Same here. As for ads, I only get 30 seconds, a minute tops of them. A small price to pay for what I think are pretty funny reviews.

  • WHOZER

I miss written recaps on this site.

    • Michael A. Novelli

      They didn’t go anywhere…

      • Hellraiser

        Yes they did.

        • Michael A. Novelli

Last I checked, the Movie Recaps button still works…

  • Olaf_the_Lofty

Several good laughs here. The diner basement experiment scenes reminded me of “Idiocracy”. If it has a redeeming feature, it would be the glamour factor of the Red Skull’s daughter and her assistant. I was twenty when this came out, and the young women of the time made a great impression on me 🙂

    • fearfanforever

      Glad you liked it!
I’ve got to say, the most fun I had writing this episode was coming up with the gag about Steve stealing the president’s car. The gags you love best are the ones that come from sudden inspiration…

  • fearfanforever

All right, I haven’t had a chance to reply to comments until now, but since I’ve got a moment, I’ve already posted my replies above.
On another note though, I’d like to address some of the other things brought up here.
    1. Written recaps ARE still being done on this website, and the recent Warrior of the Lost World review is clear evidence of that. It only takes us about two to three weeks to create a new video, so that’s probably one of the reasons you see more frequent video updates here. If you don’t like the video recaps, then that’s a shame, but there is a clear remedy to your problem. Stop watching them. When you see that a new written recap is up, read that instead.
    2. Yeah, the ads are a pain, but Blip ensures that the ads never go on longer than 60 seconds, tops. If they really bug you, here’s something to keep in mind: These ads are the only way video producers can earn money off their work. Albert doesn’t have bottomless pockets, and he doesn’t pay us to post here. The only way you can show any financial support for us is either through those ads, or via a paypal donation to us. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t do it for the money. I make less than $20 a month off my ad revenue, but the fact is it’s still a symbolic reward for my hard work, and whenever I see it, I at least feel like a success.
Anyway, that’s all the serious stuff out of the way, so I guess I’ll get back to working on that next review…

    • You make that much? It’s been a year and I think I finally cleared $20 off of everything I’ve done. I must have your beauty secret!

      • fearfanforever

Not much of a secret to it. I started out by picking six website forums I thought would be receptive to my work, posting my intro and first review on each of them, and then seeing where I got the best response. As it turns out, the people at the Booth and TGWTG Forums were the most interested, so I began posting on each website. At first, I’d only get 20 or so views, and that was on a new release day, but it quickly doubled. Then, Mr. Mendo asked me to do a colab on THIC, with a possibility for my own show on the Booth if people liked it, and I was on my way. Now, I get about 1000 views per video posted on the Booth, and about 300 views for those reviews that are only posted at TGWTG. Keep in mind that I’m not talking about a “per day” figure here, that’s where the numbers top out after one or two weeks, although I do get a general spread of about 50 views a day spread out across all my videos.
Basically, I’d cleared $25 total in six months, and I now make that every 30 days or so.
If I had any advice, it’d be to produce material at a rate where you have a new episode every two to three weeks, and cast a bit of a net to see where that material is best received. At the very least, join some forums and become active in other communities, which will draw people to your video and create awareness.
The more you know! (Cue shooting star.)

        • Michael A. Novelli

As all of my videos are part of the overall site’s Blip account, I don’t get paid at all (not yet, anyway), but at the moment, I’m in it for the fame. And a percentage once the Booth starts selling t-shirts…

          • Ah yes, the fame is incredible. I’m just waiting for Twitter to certify me so that my 46 followers (4 or 5 of which are bots) know that I am who I say I am.

          • fearfanforever

Eh, don’t worry Stan. You do quality work, and quality work finds its audience, even if it does take a bit longer sometimes.
Now, would you like to purchase some generic Cialis?
Also, I know a Nigerian prince who would love to make you a business offer.

          • That’s very kind of you to say, and put me down for 2 50 pill bottles of that good stuff. Is that prince on Twitter, I’m game for a good business offer.

          • Hellraiser

Are we just going to have chat where the only people commentating are the video makers themselves?

          • fearfanforever

Nope, trolls are welcome too. Have anything to add?

          • Hellraiser

Depends if children are going to see what I have to write.
Ah, who cares. Children can go fuck themselves for all I care.

          • fearfanforever

            We’re selling t-shirts? Cool.

          • Michael A. Novelli

Not yet, but a man can dream…

          • Or a man can act! Ryan, make us some shirts!

          • Michael A. Novelli

            With sparkles!

          • Someone to love by.

            I’d pay for one.

  • Parker

This film isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be…. there are some truly great moments, the cast is pretty good, the music is memorable…. at the very least, it was a fine introduction film to Captain America for kids of the 90s.

  • Redjoekido

What is wrong with the audio? I’m having a hard time hearing the movie characters talk. Oh and please more written recaps

  • cyberjohn

re watching this movie and reading about it I think this was an attempt to get people to support the EPA act of 1990

    • fearfanforever

I’m not sure that’s right. Watching this movie made me want to burn down an entire forest just to spite the people that made it.

  • Cactusjack

the original human torch came out in 1940. oh well. i love you fear fan

  • excellent review ! I’m not american (Tunisian actually, so your site does reach us!) but I am a big fan of Cap America (the Waid Run, The Nomad (Jack Monroe ), the 21 first issues of Brubaker (I left the boat the moment the gangrene known as Civil war reared its putrid head, need to find the Engleheart & Gruenwald one) Here’s where I post my drawings (hope you’ll like some of them) http://devilkais.deviantart.com/

Now onto the movie itself… Thank god for Johnston ‘s version! I mean Red Skull becoming Numb skull? All the evil spies are Vogue models? Steve as a car jacker?
Well for next review, may I suggest… Cool World ?Salt (yeah recent, but it was a torture…)?
Anyway , Take care guys & keep up the good work !
