VIDEO: ALF “ALF’s Special Christmas”

It’s time once again for a thoroughly inappropriate Mendo Christmas Special! This year, Mendo takes a look at the existentially crushing world of ’80s sitcom favorite ALF, and his one and only holiday episode, the two-part “ALF’s Special Christmas”. Can this show about the last survivor of a dead planet being stuck with a boring family that refuses to call him by his real name (which was created, according to Cracked.com, by a mad man who made the cast and crew’s lives hell) possibly get any more depressing? What do you think?

You know, I can remember that I watched ALF when it was on the air, but I don’t actually remember the show at all…I mean, I can remember watching Family Ties and remember specific episodes, but for the life of me, I can’t remember a single episode of ALF.  Maybe that’s for the best.

ALF the show wasn’t bad, per se, it just had nothing to it.  It was pure cotton candy, aside from the philosophical implications…

First off, while I was never a BIG fan of the Alf series, this is easily one of my all time favoriate Christmas specials. By filming in actual locations instead of the usual sets and taking what could’ve been a half-hours worth of typical sitcom story than putting in an hours worth of well woven subplots; you see an effert put in that most Christmas episodes today never try for (unlike the first Christmas episode of this show that pretty generic).
Second, while the episode was sad I didn’t consider it depressing. Far from it. I story where characters lives are improved by others despite them having problems that can’t be solved is postive compared to a story with a forced or unearned happy ending where everything just turns out perfect.

I can see your point, and I agree that it was admirable of them to try to do something with a little more depth than they needed to, but they went a little too far in the other direction!

Would you have perfered more comedy and less pathos? Try Garfield’s Christmas Special. I think it came out the same year.

In this circumstance, I find myself at a loss as to what I might have preferred, as there’s nothing wrong with pathos (especially around Xmas time).  But, there’s a line at which it becomes bathos, and this special played jump-rope with that line.  Though, as I recall, the Garfield special was decent.  🙂

Sorry for being one of the critical voices on the Macho Man review.   This was a funny and good-natured way of addressing it.

Well, I’m a big boy.  I can take my lumps!  🙂

Now, can we please make “Chris Jericho stole all the Lite-Brites” a thing, now?  😉

You just KNOW somewhere in Hollywood someone wants to return this show back to TV. Preferably someone at NBC with Dane Cook playing him.

I doubt it.  Paul Fusco is still alive, and it seems he’s next to impossible to work with, what with being crazy and all.  I sincerely doubt he’ll turn over his prize creation any time soon.  Probably for the best…

Well, that’ll teach me to open my big fat yap, now won’t it?

Well, you’re still right that he didn’t turn over his creation — he will still be doing the voice.
And the movie hasn’t gone into production yet so maybe his issues
(which I was unaware of, am curious to look up info about them) will
prevent it from actually being made.

My guess is, he’ll insist on having the puppet speak into the mic in the studio, with everyone necessary to make it work in there with him, and no one will be allowed to look at them…

Whoa. Where did the racist ALF clip come from?

    • MichaelANovelli

There was a VHS of behind the scenes bloopers released a few ice ages ago.  At the time, they were NOT hiding that clip…
